NOTE: This is believed Anthony Jr., son of Anthony the hung. The known children of Anthony Jr. are proven to have lived in Spotsylvania Co. (see John Arnold). The Anthony Arnold of Spotsylvania who served with Lt. Col William Gray in the War of 1812, may be the son of this Anthony Arnold.
Anthony states his wife's name is MARY and that he has a brother named WILLIAM. His children are not listed here, but in Anthony Arnold son's pension record (John Arnold), he named the children as Sarah, Anthony, Mary, Rice, William Arnold and Isabella Mastin.

c) Francis Arnold - 1736 is leased property by daughter and son-in-law, William Davenport and Anna Arnold, but in 1741 mortgages same property off to the Graves, Phillips and Minor families.

NOTE: This is Francis Arnold, who married Rachel Arnold and he appears to still be a resident of Spotsylvania County in 1855 as shown in the above record. All listed are neighbors. I find the families of Woodroof, Davenport, Hill, Lewis and Arnold together from South Carolina to Mississippi.

NOTE: This Benjamin Arnold must be the son of Isaac Arnold Jr. of same county. I believe this because in this deed for Benjamin Arnold, a man named "John Steward" is a witness to the deed. In Isaac Arnold' will, he names is son-in-law as "John Steward", married to his daughter, Sarah in his last will and testament.
I also believe that the children that were called the orphans of Benjamin Arnold of Spotsylvania in 1788 and that John Waller became guardian to, were the same. John Waller became guardian to Betty, Barbary, Susannah and James Arnold on December 2, 1788.

NOTE: This William Arnold is the son of Isaac Arnold, Jr. and his wife, Sarah Morton. Wm. Arnold' wife, Lydia Bell, and William's brother Benjamin's wife, Bathsheba Bell, were sisters. Children of William Arnold and Lydia Bell are Isaac: William (m. Susannah Tate of Louisa Co.); Catherine; Lydia; Sarah; Samuel; John; James (m. Nancy and moved in Elbert Co., Georgia); and Joseph Arnold.
William Arnold signed his will in Spotsylvania Co. on September 17, 1774. It was probated May 18, 1775.

NOTE: George Arnold, born abt. 1733 King George Co. died 1822 in Spotsylvania Co. Buried in Fredrickburg, Virginia. Married Sarah White on 9 NOV 1758 in St. Paul's Parr. Spotsylvania, Virginia. Parents are believed to be ISAAC Arnold Jr. and Sarah Morton. Hezikiah Arnold served in the Revolutionary War in place of George Arnold according to Hezikiah Arnold' pension records: "14 March 1834. Stokes Co., N .C. Hezikiah Arnold of said county, aged 70, declares he entered service in Spotsylvania Co., Va., where he then resided as a substitute for George Arnold under Capt. Thomas Towles, Col. McWilliams and Gen. Weden."
George Arnold's children were: Reuben Arnold, Aaron Arnold, Hezikiah Arnold, Enoch Arnold, Mary Stewart, Nancy Stewart, Ophra Johnson, and Rebecca Arnold.
h) Hezekiah Arnold - found 1788 as witnessing a deed. Same Hezikiah Arnold who owned the property in Louisa County. Son of George Arnold.

NOTE: Hezekiah Arnold is believed to have married Crotia Cassidy Kennedy, widow of Tarlton Brown Luck, c1796, which is how he came by his earliest land acquisition. Hezikiah was single man whose only possession was a horse in 1787 when he was tax listed in Spotsylvania County.

"State of Kentucky, Clarke County. 26th day of March, 1834 personally came before Judge Richard French, of the Circuit Court, John Arnold and swore the following (in order to attain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th, 1832), that he entered the service of his country as an eighteen months man in the month of August, 1778, to the best of his recollection, in the County of Spotsylvania in the State of Virginia in a company commanded by Capt. John Benam. He entered as a substitute for his father, Anthony Arnold, who had been drafted "or upon whom the lot fell in his class." (src. NOTE: This is the son of Anthony Arnold Jr. as proven by his pension records on file in Kentucky. He was born July 24, 1758 in Caroline County and died July 15, 1840 in Clarke County, Kentucky. His pension record mention that he left no wife and only two children were listed, Henry and Richmond Arnold. The pension record has a statement from John's sister, Sally Arnold Benning which states she was 69 years old in 1834 thus making her birthdate 1768.

NOTE: This is the John Arnold who married William Pettus' daughter, Barbary Pettus in 1775 in Louisa Co., VA and moved to Abbeville Co., SC with the Davenport family.

Will named sons William, Overton Hart, James, Joseph and son-in-law William Graves. Mentions legal wife, and friends: Jonathan Clark; Edmund Clarke and Samuel Overton Pettus as trustees.
NOTE: William Pettus and Ann Davenport's Children: Louisa, 1780-84, m. 1803-05, Aaron Arnold and went to Christian Co., Ky, later moved to Ill. Because they did not approve of slavery. William Pettus Arnold did not go. He married Amydiah Pettus. His sons fought in CSA. Suan m. John Davenport and went to South Carolina. Barbara m. 1775 John Arnold and went to SC. Anna, 1760-1815, m. 1778 William Graves and went to Todd Co., Ky. William Pettus, Jr. 1764-1813, m. April 10, 1784 to his first cousin, Lucy Waters Pettus, dau of John Pettus. His father gave him land in Spotsylvania Co. in 1788, but he lived in Louisa Co. until 1811 (Valentine 466 and 1146). He followed the Arnold to Christian Co., Ky after 1792. He was "of Spotsylvania" in 1792."
p) John Pettus - 1832 Military Record
"PETTIS, JOHN.--Spotsylvania, Aug. 7, 1832. Drafted in Caroline about 1779, under Capt. Philip Johnson and served at Williamsburg. Later was with Samuel Coleman in First Virginia, Continental Line, and was under Capt. Francis Cowherd and Col. Samuel Hawes. Was in the battles at Guilford and Eutaw, and was discharged at Salisbury about January, 1782. Total service, about eighteen months. Died July 1, 1833." (src. q) John Graves Sr. - from a 1713 deed (father is Thomas Graves of Hanover in 1704) Is found on a deed to his brother-in-law, William Pettus, giving him Susannah Graves inheritance.
"Novr. 22, 1782. Jno. Graves of North Carolina, eldest son and heir at law of Thos. Graves of Spots. Co., Va., to Wm. Pettus of Va. Whereas, sd. Thos. Graves, decd., by his last will and testament, after certain legacies were paid, directed the remainder of his estate equally divided among all his children or their heirs, but did not empower his executors to convey the same, the title so far, therefore, remains vested in the sd. Jno. Graves, as eldest son and heir at law, etc., and it being found necessary to sell and convey certain tracts of land in Spots. Co., whereof sd. Thos. Graves died, seized, etc., this indenture witnesseth, the sd. Jno. Graves, for the sum of £451, gold or silver, to be pd. by the sd. Pettus to the Executors of the sd. Thomas Graves, the sd. NOTE: By 1782, John Graves had moved on to North Carolina. The other Graves listed were his brothers. The John Arnold who signed as witness was probably William and Susannah's son-in-law, who married Barbary Pettus.

NOTE: Thomas Graves, b. 1691 Spotsylvania Co., married Ann Davenport, daughter of Davis Davenport. They had children: John, Thomas Jr., Soloman, William, Richard, Susannah and Robert Graves. Thomas Graves Sr. had two plantations, one in Spotsylvania, one in Louisa, across the North Anna River from each other. When Thomas Graves, Sr., died in Spotsylvania in 1768, son-in-law William Pettus was one of the executors and he purchased his father-in-laws plantation in Spotsylvania from the Graves heirs and that is where he died.
t) Joseph Graves - died May 12, 1785 here. Was son of John Graves, Sr. and grandson of Thomas Graves of Hanover. Married Frances Coleman.

NOTE: George Woodruff was granted land on both sides of "Arnold's Run" in Spotsylvania County in 1726. He gave the property to his son, Benjamin, in 1745. In 1745, Benjamin Woodwruff purchases 200 more acres connected to the original property from William Davenport of Louisa Co., VA.

I find a Judith Edwards who married a Wm. Arnold in Spotsylvania Co.

NOTE: It looks like John Davenport moved from Louisa County into Spotsylvania Co. between 1765-1766 and he was having some legal troubles at the time. He mortgaged some of his property to George Lumsden of Louisa Co., Virginia. George LUMSDEN was the father to Nancy LUMSDEN, who's husband was James ARNOLD of Louisa Co., Virginia and who moved to Abbeville County, South Carolina.
One of the men named on a court case with John Davenport was a "John WALLER". John Waller was a planter who owned property next to the Davenport and Arnold and he married Elizabeth Davenport, daughter to James Davenport and Mary Rutherford.
John Davenport was born about 1717 in King William County and he died about 1774 in Spotsylvania County. He married Mary Smith 1740 in Hanover Co., Virginia.

LOUISA COUNTY:
From misc. Deeds and land grants that I have seen, it looks like the Arnold family and the others owned property in this County as early as the 1720's. Widowed Ann Arnold gives her daughter property next to that of Martin Davenport on Rocky Creek in 1725 and there are documented facts from then on of the strong association the other families had with the Arnold and Davenports.
Most of the subjects mentioned in Louisa County lived in the St. Martins Parish area of the County. (St. Martin's Parish, i.E., approximately the lower two and a half miles of the County)

Note: James Arnold moved to Abbeville Co., SC where he died. Will on file in Abbeville Co., box 1, pack 1 dated mar 5, 1836 - lists daughter as "Nancy Lumsden Arnold" in will and she is known daughter to the James. James Arnold May be the son of William Arnold and Mary Davenport of Spotsylvania Co., Va and brother to the John Arnold who married Barbary Pettus in Louisa Co., Va and who's property is sold in Abbeville Co. In 1828.
I) Lindsey Arnold - married Elizabeth Davis on November 18, 1785 by Rev. John Waller in Louisa Co. Was witnessed by a William Arnold. Security, Jonathan Davis.
"Deposition of COB. C. G. Coleman, Louisa County that Lindsey Arnold married his wife, Elizabeth, in Louisa Co., Va., in 1785, and that he was in the revolutionary war and died in Rutherford Co., n.c. about mar. 7, 1832 and that his wife Elizabeth died in Louisa County within the last 4 years. Lindsey Arnold was born and raised in Caroline and moved to Louisa. His wife was Elizabeth Davis. He went from Caroline Co., Va., to the war and on his return removed to Louisa. Lindsey Arnold's father was named Benjamin Arnold. William Arnold was brother of Lindsey. After he returned from the war he removed from Louisa to Georgia and died there. William Arnold married Judy Scuddy in Louisa and his wife moved to Georgia with him."
Note: Lindsey Arnold was born 1758 Carolina County, Virginia according to his pension record filed on July 12, 1821 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. He enlisted in february 1781 in North Carolina in the company of captain Hughs in colonel white's first regiment of Virginia cavalry and continued with that corps until the close of the war when he was discharged at new market, South Carolina, he was at the battle of Camden and the surrender of Cornwallis. Lindsey Arnold died March 7, 1832 in Rutherford Co., NC.
<>Lindsey Arnold had two wives apparently. Elizabeth Davis was his first wife but she is on file stating that her husband left Virginia about 1797 and never returned leaving her and her children. They were married November 14, 1785 in Frederickville Parish, Louisa County by Rev. John Waller. The second wife of Lindsey Arnold was Nancy Arnold in North Carolina. She too filed for his pension in Tennessee, where she moved after his death. She claimed they were married December 1791.Father's name was said to have been "Benjamin Arnold" and he had a brother named "William".

Note: this Lydia Arnold is Lydia Bell, wife of William Arnold Sr. Who's will was probated in Spotsylvania Co. In 1775. Here is where the widowed Lydia Arnold and her son, William Jr. and his wife, Susan tate, were selling off the fathers property. Wm. Arnold Sr. Was the son of Isaac Arnold.
J) William Arnold - 1748 listed as purchasing property in Goochland County.

M) Hezikiah Arnold - 1797 Louisa Co. Deeds (Src. "Deed Book I 1793-1800", pg. 384 and pg. 390) was born 1764 in King William Co., Va and entered into service for revolutionary war in Spotsylvania Co., Va.
Note: quoted on pension record as having lived in Spotsylvania, Hanover and Louisa Counties in Virginia. Then Madison and Franklin Counties of Georgia, and when making application for pension was living in Stokes Co., NC. 14 March 1834 (Src. Revolutionary war pension).
By looking at land deeds and grants in colonial Virginia, I find that Hezikiah Arnold owned land that stretched from the lower end of Louisa to the upper end of Hanover, on the east side of Rocky Creek in the late 1790's. Stated in deed that property was adj. To Augustine Woolfolk, Meriwether Smith, Ntl.. Snelson, Ann Phillips. When looking at older grants and deeds dating back to 1720's in Louisa County, I find that Ann Arnold (Benjamin Sr.'s widow), John Pettus, Richard Wright, Thomas Graves, William MacGhee, Richard Davenport and Martin Davenport also owned property on Rocky Creek in Louisa County.

Note: notice the neighbors on Rocky Creek. Graves, Pettus and Arnold. All families that I am looking for. Richard Wright is also found on other deeds up until the 1770's. A Jacob Wright's widow sold property to a Wm. and Mary Arnold on Beaverdam Br. of Reedy R. in 1795. This is who I believe is going to be Zachariah W. Arnold's parents.

note: this is the son of Thomas Graves Sr. As Thomas Graves Sr. Died in 1767 and this deed was dated 1778. This is the property that his father owned and gave to his son. It sits on both sides of the North Anna River in Louisa/Spotsylvania Counties, Virginia.

Note: Charles Kennedy and Croatia Davenports' son, Charles Jr. Left Virginia and moved to South Carolina . ." William and Fields Kennedy witnessed a deed from Charles and John Davenport (Sons of Richard Davenport a neighbor and possible relative) in Abbeville Co., SC in May of 1793. In 1819, Charles Kennedy, Jr. Left his will in Madison Co., Alabama. His brother William Kennedy had two sons, William Jr. and Fields Kennedy. They are the ones who witnessed the deed from Charles and John Davenport, sons of Richard Davenport.

note: born 1726 in King William Co., Virginia to Richard and Elizabeth Davenport. John Davenport married Susannah Pettus, daughter to William Pettus and Susannah Graves (of Hanover./Spotsylvania Co). John Davenport died after moving to Abbeville County, South Carolina. Other children were: Charles, Richard, Peggy, and Patsy Davenport.
According to "the Davenport chronicles", the Pettus land, bought by Susanna's grandfather John Pettus of the Thomas Carr estate in 1745, adjoined Martin Davenport's 1727 patent (hence was quite near Richard of Albemarle's tract), but by then one Garret owned that portion of Martin's tract. Martin's original ownership was cited in the Carr to Pettus deed. The Pettus land was totally within Louisa County, created from upper Hanover in 1742. The original Davenport tract was divided roughly in half by the Hanover-Louisa County line.
John Davenport, son of Richard, lived on the Louisa tract until 1791, when he moved to Abbeville district, South Carolina, joining his older brother Charles there. Charles, surely the most successful of Richard's sons, had been a magistrate and sheriff of Culpeper County during the revolution, moved to the South Carolina back country in 1785--where he was immediately commissioned a Justice of the peace and a member of the County court.
