CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Formed in 1728 from Henrico County (one of the original shires). From its original territory came Albemarle Co., Amherst Co., (part of) Appomattox Co., Bedford Co., Buckingham Co., Campbell Co., Cumberland Co. in 1748, Fluvanna Co., Nelson Co., & Powhatan Co.
The families migrated here by the late 1700's on their way to SC. I find on records:
a) Francis Arnold - 1769 is listed as witnessing a deed filed in Halifax Co., VA and he is listed in the 1784 taxes.
"3 Jan 1769 (Halifax Co. DB7) William Sampson of Cumberland Co., Southam Parish to Thomas Davenport Jr. of same 300 ac. on Poplar Creek adj. Winfrey, Robert Kent, James Davenport and witnessed by John Hendrick, Francis Arnold.
b) William Arnold Sr. - - (Src. "1768 List of Tithes - Cumberland Co. VA", house no. 172) Son of Francis Arnold
"28 Nov 1750 (Cumb. Co. CO 1749-1756 Abstracts) - ordered that John Woodson, Thomas Davenport Sr., James Davenport, James Terry, Henry Davenport, William Arnold and his sons, Thomas Davenport Jr., Daniel Terry, Daniel Coleman Sr. and others repair a Road from William Womacks upper path to the Buckingham Road at Thomas Davenports lower path."
NOTE: William Arnold Sr., b. 1700 Halifax col, Va and married Elizabeth m. Bostick about 1725. William Arnold Sr. Died November 28, 1774 in Cumberland Co. Possible son of Francis and Rachel Arnold. Children were: James Arnold; Thomas Arnold (who married Mary Jennings); William Arnold Jr. (Who married Elizabeth Noell); Henry Arnold (who married Sarah); Moses and John Arnold (who married Sarah).
C) William Arnold Jr. - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 171) son of William Arnold Sr. and Elizabeth m. Bostick.
"26 February 1765: on the petition of summons brought by John Scott and company, plaintiffs, against William Arnold, Jr., defendant, for one pound eleven shillings and eight pence half penny, said to be due by account; this day came the plaintiffs by their attorney and the defendant having been duly warned and now called, failed to appear. Where upon the said John Scott made oath to the justices of the plaintiffs demand for the sum aforesaid. Therefore, it is considered by the court that the plaintiffs recover against the defendant the said sum together with their costs by them in this behalf expended including an attorneys fee. Present: John Netherland, Thomas Davenport and William Smith, gentlemen." (Src. Cumberland County Order Book, 1764-1767, pg. 90)
- 1765 sold property that he owned in Halifax County to a Philimon Green.
"1 April 1765. Rec. 21 Aug 1766: grantor, William Arnold Jr. of Cumberland County to grantee, Philimon Green of Halifax County. 50 pounds for 200 acres in Halifax Co.. on Woods Creek, bounded by James Bell, Size more. Witnesses: Anthony Colquitt, Christian Colquitt and John Clay. Signed William (m) Arnold (his mark)" (Src. Halifax Co, Va Deed Book 2, page 330)
Note: William Arnold Jr., b. 1730 Goochland County, Virginia. Married Elizabeth Noell and died in Halifax Co., Virginia in 1801.
D) Thomas Arnold - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 216) son of William Arnold Sr. and Elizabeth.
"January court, 1755: Thomas Arnold and Mary his wife, plaintiffs, against Thomas Dulin, defendant; in case. For reasons appearing to the court this suit is ordered to be dismissed." (Src. Cumberland County Order Book, 1752-1758, page 228)
"April court, 1758: an indenture of bargain and sale between Thomas Arnold and Mary his wife, of the one part and Robert Johns of the other part, and the memorandum of livery and seizin thereon endorsed are acknowledged by the said Thomas and Mary and ordered to be recorded, and the said Mary, being first privily (sic) examined as the law directs, relinquished her right of dower in and to the land and premises conveyed by the said indenture." Note: Thomas Arnold, b. abt. 1729 Cumberland Co., Va. Married Mary Jennings, daughter of William Jennings and Mary Allen, in 1751. Father was William Arnold Sr. and Elizabeth Bostick. Thomas Arnold died in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia in 1793.
Thomas Arnold and Mary Jennings had children: Zachariah (who married Nancy Beasly and Charlotte Traver); Elizabeth (married Mordicia Hill); John; Susannah; Thomas Jr. (Married frances Jennings); William; Millie (married Edward Nix) and Mary Arnold (married David LockHart).
E) Moses Arnold - 1772 listed in an indenture between himself and William and Elizabeth Arnold. Son of William Arnold Sr. and Elizabeth m. Bostick.
- 1774-1778 was one of the executors for William Arnold Sr.'s estate. Others listed were William Sr.'s other sons, John and Thomas Arnold.
- died 1811 in Cumberland County.
F) Zachariah Arnold - b. 1762 Cumberland County, Va. Parents Thomas Arnold and Mary Jennings.
Note: Zachariah Arnold moved to Oglethorpe Co., Ga and his descendants moved to Lincoln Co., Tennessee in the 1800's. Zachariah died October 11, 1834 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee.
Zachariah was married twice. Once to Nancy Beasley and once to Charlotte Traver. Zachariah's children were: John, Moses, sanders walker, Nancy, Malissa (m. William Calvin Jennings, son of William Jennings and Polly Kidd), Malinda and Patsy Arnold.
G) James Arnold - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 72)
Note: father was William Arnold Sr. and Elizabeth Bostick.
H) John Arnold - 1771 Cumberland court records.
Note: I believe this to be the son of William Arnold and Elizabeth Bostick and the same John Arnold listed in Prince Edward County, Virginia selling off Bostick land to pay off debts.
Apparently this John Arnold went to court in January of 1771 in Cumberland County with James and Robert Donald and company which lasted until July 22 1771. This is when Zachariah Hendrick agreed to act as garnishee in the case and paid the sum for John Arnold.

J) David Davenport - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 170) - son of Martin and Davenport and Dorothy Glover of Hanover, Va as shown below:
"26 Aug 1767 David Davenport of Cumberland Co. To John Lewis of spots. Co. and David Ross of Goochland attorney in fact for Alex. Blaine of other part....sum of 30 pounds which sd. Davenport is justly indebted to mess. Semple and Bayler for which they have recovered a judgment agst. Him in County court of spots. and for the payment of which the sd. John Lewis has made himself liable to the sd. Semple and Baylor and for the further consideration of the sum of 51 pounds 3 shillings 3 pence which sd. David Davenport is justly indebted to aforesd. Alex Baine and for which sd. Alex Baine has recovered a judgement agst. Him and for 9 pounds 6 shilling 6 pence indebted to Robertson and Watson in company...judgment agst. Sd. Davenport in Cumberland court which sd. Several sums of money the sd. Davenport honestly desires to secure and pay to his several creditors before mentioned and for 5 shillings paid to sd. Davenport by sd. Lewis and Ross... sd. Davenport hath granted, bargained and sold to sd. John Lewis and David Ross....a tract in Amherst Co. Near the blue ridge cont. 296 ac. Being the same granted to John Atkins by patent 20 July 1753 and conveyed to Davenport, another tract in Louisa in South fork of hickory Creek 398 ac. Formerly the property of Benjamin Hubbard of Caroline and by him sold to Davenport, likewise the reversion of another tract of land lying in Hanover on North Anna River cont. 150 ac. Whereon Dorothy Davenport, mother of sd. David Davenport resides being the same tract of land which Martin Davenport deceased, father of sd. David by his lw&t devised to sd. Dorothy for life and then to sd. David Davenport..... as more over all sd. David Davenport's right to 30 ac. In spots. Co. On North Anna River a little below Davenports bridge which sd. 30 ac. Sd. Davenport purchased of his brother William Davenport whose bond he has for a conveyance of same....Lewis and Ross to sell land after advertising in Va. Gazette for one month and money to pay debts with interest and if it should not be necessary to sell all lands to pay debt, they should revert to sd. L) Thomas Davenport Sr. (Son of Davis Davenport who is a brother to Martin Davenport) - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 81) and who is found on 1771, 1774 and 1775 deeds:

"16 Dec 1773 (Abe.Co. Wills) will of Thomas Davenport leaves to son Julius Davenport "all effects he has received of me".
"29 Dec 1774 (Abe.Co. Wills ) will of Thomas Davenport leaves to son Julius Davenport "a deed to him for 100 ac."
"29 Dec 1774 (Abe. Co. Wb2) Thomas Davenport of Littleton Parish to son James, son Thomas, son Henry, son Julius a deed to him for 100 ac., son William, grandson William, son of Stephen Davenport dec'd., daughter Drucilla Glenn, granddaughter Molly and grandson Stephen, exec. Thomas, Henry, and William Davenport and Gideon Glenn and witnessed by David Davenport and Shearn Cook, proved 25 sept 1775."
"24 May 1774 (Abe. Co. 1774-1778) - ordered that Thomas Davenport Sr. Be summoned to appear at the next court to declare whether he be willing to take upon himself the adm. of the estate of his deceased son Joseph Davenport."
"28 Nov 1750 (Abe. Note: this is the Thomas Davenport that married grace terry in Henrico County, Virginia, 1734. He was born about 1692 in King William County to Davis Davenport. He died in Cumberland County in 1774.
Thomas and grace Davenport's children are: James, Henry, Drucilla, Julius, Thomas Jr., William, Stephen and Joseph Davenport.
M) Thomas Davenport Jr. (Grandson of Davis Davenport and son of Thomas Davenport Sr.) - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 77)
"27 Aug 1781 (Abe. Co. Ob) motion of Thomas Davenport granted adm. of estate of Lucy Davenport dec'd. Security with Henry Wright and William Davenport"
Note: Thomas Davenport Jr. Married Lucy Ransome April 28, 1750 in Cumberland County. He was born about 1721 in King William County and died November 27, 1780 in Cumberland County. Lucy Ransome Davenport died by 1781.
Thomas and Lucy Davenport's children were: Nancy Anne Davenport and Thomas Davenport.
N) Henry Davenport (son of Thomas Davenport Sr.) - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 78)
Note: Henry Davenport married Ann Pemberton December 12, 1770 in King William County and had son, Wilson Davenport in 1772. Was an attorney in Lynchburg Co., Va.
O) Joseph Davenport - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 80) died in this County by 1774. Was grandson of Martin Davenport and son of Thomas Davenport and grace terry of same County.
"24 May 1774 (Abe. Co. Co 1774-1778) - ordered that Thomas Davenport Sr. Be summoned to appear at the next court to declare whether he be willing to take upon himself the adm. of the estate of his deceased son Joseph Davenport."
P) Absalom Davenport - in Cumberland as early as 1762 (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 127).
Note: was son of Richard Davenport and grandson of Davis Davenport of the Pamunkey Davenports. Absalom's plantation sat on the headwaters of muddy Creek, waters of the James River.
"28 Nov 1771 (Abe. Co. Db5, p. 35) know....i David Davenport of Abe. Co. Sell to William Davenport, Absolom Davenport, and Thomas Stegar one negroe named Charles and one negro boy Daniel for 54 pounds....and witnessed by Jesse Thomas and Samuel Stegar."
Q) Julius Davenport - (Src. "1768 list of tithes - Cumberland Co. Va", house no. 190) was in Cumberland as early as 1757. Was grandson of Davis Davenport, and son of Thomas Davenport and grace terry)
"16 Dec 1773 (Abe.Co. Wills) will of Thomas Davenport leaves to son Julius Davenport "all effects he has received of me".
"29 Dec 1774 (Abe.Co. Wills ) will of Thomas Davenport leaves to son Julius Davenport "a deed to him for 100 ac.".
Note: a11 Davenports are known sons and grandsons of Martin Davenport of Hanover (uncles of Barbary Pettus Arnold)

Note: the McGehee family is found with Arnold in South Carolina in 1800's. There is also a family named "McGaughey" who is buried in the same cemetery as Zachariah W. Arnold (Prentiss Co., ms) who is said to have changed their name from McGehee. They came to Mississippi with Zachariah Arnold in the 1840's)

Y) John Bostick - 1751 neighbor of William Arnold and Davenport family.
