ABBEVILLE COUNTY:

Abbeville County was established in 1785 from the split up of the five-county area known as Old 96 District. Abbeville County lies in the rolling foothills of the northwestern sector of the State of South Carolina. It is bounded on the West by the State of Georgia, on the North by Anderson County, on the East by Laurens and Greenwood Counties, and on the South by McCormick County.

"William Pettis Arnold, Millie Arnold Watson. File #2-37 makes mention of a will, but will is missing. "William Pettis Arnold, lately deceased in Madison County, Georgia, His son Samuel O. Arnold of Madison Co., Georgia, on 20 Feb. 1833 gave a Power of Attorney to Paschal D. Klough of Abbeville, S.C. to collect "for me what is due to me as the executor of the Estate of my father, William P. Arnold from the Estate of his deceased father John Arnold who died in September, 1827 and owned property in Abbeville, S,C. Witnesses: Richardson Hancock, Elisha Ware (src. "John Cochran" is the husband to Nancy Lumsden Arnold, known daughter to James Arnold and Nancy Lumsden of Louisa Co., VA (who also moved to Abbeville). "John Marshall" married Mary Ann Gray, daughter of Frederick Gray and sister to Zachariah W. Arnold's wife, Casander.

NOTE: It is still unknown exactly who these minor Arnolds are but Zachariah did not travel to Mississippi with them. By 1845 when Zachariah is listed in the book "Migrations of South Carolinians on Natchez Trace", it is only his immediate family as traveling with him. It is told by Zachariah's descendants that the Arnold family came into Mississippi by way of Lawrenceville, Tennessee so it is possible that the minor children were left with other relatives in Tennessee.

NOTE: Taking from the "Arnold Family Association From The South" by Hazel Arnold MacIvor, Volume 2, page 128, she states that "James Arnold lived in the Greenwood area after their marriage. On the Mills Atlas map for Abbeville District, dated 1820, the Arnold home is shown on the Mathews road just above Deadfall. Nearby is the Arnold-Cochran-Ellis family cemetery with markers dating from 1817. Three children of James and Nancy Arnold were: Alexander B. Arnold, 1793-1853, a physician, lived in Lowndesville. Archibald (Baldy) Arnold lived at his father's place on the Mathews road and was reportedly quite a sportsman, owning fast horses and a racetrack at Deadfall. He and his wife, Pamela Partlow Arnold, 1799-1817, daughter of John Partlow, are buried in the family cemetery. One record says Archibald Arnold married second Mahala Reynolds, three children: Georgia, Larkin and James Arnold. Nancy Lumsden Arnold married John Cochran who died in 1855, aged 71 years. Two sons, Alexander B. and John W. Cochran, did not marry; two other children were: 1. James N. Cochran was a lawyer in Abbeville, then lived many years in Cokes- bury and later in Hodges, married Celestia Douglass White, widow of Leonard J. White; four children: Mamie, John, McNary and James Douglas Cochran. 2. Mary Ann Cochran married William McNary, no children.

As shown here, by where the children were born, the family left South Carolina about 1838 and arrived in Mississippi about 1840. If Wm. NOTE: Charles Davenport and John Davenport are the same as the Cumberland Co., VA Davenports in the 1760's. Charles, b. 1726 Spotsylvania Co. VA, and John were the sons of Richard Davenport (b. 1713 King William Co., VA), and grandson of Martin Davenport, Sr.'s first marriage (of the Pamunkey Davenports - New Kent Co., VA and Hanover Co., VA).

John Davenport married Susannah Pettus, daughter to William Pettus and Susannah Graves (of Hanover Co./Spotsylvania Co.). John Davenport died in Abbeville Co., SC in

1798. "The Pamunkey Davenports of Colonial Virginia," gives the wife of John Davenport, son of Richard of Albemarle, son of Martin of Hanover ( d. 1735), as Susannah Pettus. John's LW&T probated in Abbeville District, South Carolina, in 1798 identifies his wife as Susannah, and his children as Charles, Richard, Peggy, and Patsy. Two of the witnesses to the Will were John Arnold and John Pettus Arnold.

Susannah Pettus Davenport's sister, Barbary Pettus, married John Arnold in Louisa Co., Virginia in 1775. This John Arnold was son of William Arnold Sr. and Mary Davenport, eldest daughter to William Davenport of Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Quoting from "The Davenport Chronicles", Dr. Davenport states: "In 1778-79, William Arnold, Sr., and his brother-in-law John Davenport went to Uwharrie Waters, Guilford County, North Carolina, to look at land in the same neighborhood where Augustine Davenport, another son of William, had settled in 1768-69. The Rowan-Guilford Line divided the neighborhood, with Augustine being on the Rowan side. Shortly after Arnold's and John's arrival in North Carolina, Randolph County was created from the south of Guilford, and took in the land of Arnold's and John's interest. Having decided to settle permanently in North Carolina, the Arnold returned to Virginia, and divested themselves of their property there."

Children of some of these Davenports also moved to Mississippi with my Arnold'. They are buried in cemeteries around Tippah and Prentiss Co., Mississippi.

"Franklin Cochran" is most likely related to John Cochran and Nancy Lumsden Arnold (daughter to James Arnold of Spotsylvania Co., VA and Abbeville Co., SC) who also lived in Abbeville Co., SC for a period. "Thomas J. Hill" married Polly Berry, daughter to John Berry and granddaughter to Hudson P. Berry who died in Greenville Co., MS. Some of the Berry's and Hill's moved to Old Tishomingo Co., MS with Zachariah W. Arnold in the mid 1800's.

NOTE: John founded nine Baptist churches in VA between 1767 and 1793, when he moved to Abbeville, SC, where he died 4 Jul 1802. See "Semple's History of the Rise and Progress of the Baptists in Virginia". Buried in the Walker-Hackett family cemetery at the Vines home place on the road from Scotch Cross to Cambridge, South Carolina. He founded two Baptist churches in SC.

SUMMARY: After looking over the data for this particular Arnold group from Virginia into South Carolina, it is the opinion of this writer that the Abbeville County Arnolds are all descended from Francis Arnold and Rachel Arnold of Virginia. This same group continued to migrate together across the nation, finally ending up in Texas by the 1900's.
