St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery

Baltimore Road
Rockville, Montgomery Co., MD

The exact date on which St. Mary's Church in Rockville was built is not known, but it is thought that the cornerstone was laid in the latter part of 1817; at which time the pastor was Fr. Redmond, S.J. The building was completed under his successor, Fr. Carroll.
In October 1887, a parcel of land containing about 6-1/3 acres was acquired on Baltimore Road [aka Norbeck Road] from Charles and Jane Maddox, at a distance of about one mile from the Church, and which is used only as a cemetery known as 'St. Mary's Cemetery'.
St. Mary's Catholic Church maintains records of ownership of burial lots and of funeral services conducted; but does not maintain detailed records of individual interments. There are a number of sites for which there are no ground markers-some are known to be vacant-others may or may not be vacant. The original partial list of interments contributed by John Bowman should be understood as having no connection to Church records but was provided generous sharing of private records. The principal source of the following material has been the photographing and recording of the tombstones by Sharon Strout.

He said Suffer the little children and most of these children did just that. Here they lie
so close to His hand. Who could ask for more than that? Donated by Anna Emond
