Thurs 19 Feb 1914, Mattoon, Page 11 SWANSON, John and Emil were called from our midst last Thursday. About 10:30 that forenoon Emil was seen on the street. He returned home and went with his father to cut down some trees. As the last tree fell, it struck them. Since they did not return home at dinner time, Miss Lillian went to search for them. As she climbed a tall tree to look, she saw her father and brother lying there dead and she screamed for help. Mr. Swanson was 53 years and Emil was 16 years old. Mr. Swanson was born in Sweden. He had traveled in Florida, California, and Pennsylvania and recently in Black Hills, S.D. When he came to Mattoon about fourteen years ago, his wife died. Five children survive, Mrs. John Johnson, Mrs. Chas. Johnson, Sybil, Abel and Lillian. The deceased was a member of the Free Masons Lodge and many of his brothers attended the funeral at the M. E. V.W. Thurs 26 Mar 1914, Neighborhood News from Cecil, Page 33 MARX, Gottlieb died on the forenoon of 18 March following almost five weeks of suffering from a stroke and was buried last Saturday. He was born in Reesehl, Pommern, Germany on 2 December 1847. He married Caroline Krause and their marriage was blessed with seven children, of which two have already preceded their father in death. The surviving children are Herman, Wilhelm, Franz, Max, also the daughters Anna and Marie. Services were held at the house and burial was at the church cemetery with Pastor C. V.W. Thurs 11 Jun 1914, Town Line, Richmond & Belle Plaine News PEVONKE, Lena was buried in Leopolis on Monday. Anton, Peter and George Dillenberg and their wives attended the funeral of their niece. There is deep sorrow in our neighborhood over the death of
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pevonke. She was born on 27 May
1900 and died on 5 June 1914. Measles and pneumonia were the cause
of her death. She leaves her sorrowing parents, five brothers and
six sisters. The funeral was held Monday at the Catholic Church.

age of seventeen years and was buried Sunday with Pastor Huebner officiating.
The pallbearers were his school friends Walter Hohn, Willie Hohn, Franz

As old people seek for help when a storm comes, so did this mother with a prayer book in her hand and beginning to read. Within a quarter hour she was struck by lightning. Thurs 9 July 1914, (Added info found in German entry), Page 9 SCHAFBERGER, Peter drowned Sunday afternoon around four o’clock in the Wolf River about a quarter mile north of Whitehouse Bridge, near the old McGee place. He was bathing with several friends, Henry and John Montour, Fred Hewitt and Henry Straus. His body was found the next forenoon in about twelve feet of water. Besides his parents, he leaves three brothers, Joseph, Johan and Frank and three sisters, Mrs. Theresa Meyer from Columbus, Mrs. Mary Straus from Wescott and Annie Schafberger. V.W. Thurs 30 July 1914, Welcome, Wis., Page 24 WIRTH, Male, KRAUSE, Wm. & KRAUSE, Reynold were drowned while swimming in the Embarrass river on Sunday. The twelve year old Wirth boy suffered with a cramp while swimming. Wm. Krause, who came to his aid, was pulled down under water by the drowning victim. Reynold Krause tried pulling them to safety and became tangled in the weeds. All three were found dead in the river. Reynold and Wm Krause were both married and were in their late twenties in age. V.W. Thurs 6 Aug 1914, Tigerton, Page 30 KERSTEN, Maria Carolina (FAUSCHE) passed away peacefully on Monday. The deceased was born on 11 October 1851 in Landsberg, Province of Brandenburg, Germany and married on 24 October 1875 to Wm. Kersten. They came together to this country in 1883 and settled in Split Rock. Two years later they moved to Tigerton where she has remained until her end. After her husband died eight years ago, she has lived with her children. She has been suffering with illness for two years, had recovered again until last week when a relapse took her life. She reached the age of 62 years and leaves to mourn her death, a son and three daughters, also several siblings in Germany. Her passing will be mourned by many for she was a good old woman. V.W. Thurs 3 Sep 1914, Page 28 GOERS, Friedericke Johanna Charlotte (SCHMIDT), a faithful sister has departed from this life on 25 August. She was born on 5 March 1844 in Grosswachlien, Kreis Neugarten in Pommern, Germany. She came to America in 1869 and on 10 August of the same year married Wilhelm Goers. The young couple settled in Town Herman. The Lord God has blessed them with a large family of eleven children, of which six have already preceded her in death along with her husband, who died about a year ago. Since his death she has lived with her children in shifts. During her last illness of stomach cancer she was living with her son Wilhelm in Cecil and her Pastor was P. Norden. The years of her pilgrimage were 70 years, 7 months and 19 days. A large group attended the funeral services which were held in the home of her son, Albert here in Town Herman. Burial was at St John’s Ev. Lutheran Cemetery. May the blessings of her memory remain. Surviving are two sisters and a brother in Germany, five children, Albert Goers on Town Herman, Franz Goers of Wausau, Wis., Wm. He was sick only a few days. Dr Baldwin from Gillett was called on Sunday evening and performed the operation, but the young man died the next morning. V.W. Thurs 17 Sep 1914, Tigerton, Page 32 ROESKE, Julius Gottlieb has passed away. He was born on 30 March 1867 in Rosendale, Wis. He was confirmed by Pastor Moldenhauer. On 19 Apr 1891 he married his now surviving wife, Ida Leitzke and their marriage was blessed with six children, of which two have preceded their father into eternity. For twenty two years he has lived in Tigerton. The deceased has always enjoyed the best of health until last winter when he began to suffer with a kidney disease. All medical help was to no avail, yet in the end he underwent surgery. On the 9th of this month he passed away in the arms of his wife in the hospital and was buried on Sunday, the 13th at the local church with Pastor Siebrandt officiating. He reached the age of 47 years and is mourned by his wife, four children, three brothers, six sisters and many relatives. Our heartfelt condolences. Herman Leitzle, brother in law of the deceased came today from Canada, however he was too late and found that Mr Roeske was already dead. The deceased was a foreman for many years at the woodyard of Tigerton Lbr. Company and had many friends. Many came to pay their last respects. V.W. Thurs 15 Oct 1914, Pella, Page 13 KONKEL, Adolf died of a kidney disease on 5 October following surgery in St Elisabeth Hospital in Appleton at the age of 62 years, 8 months and 11 days. He was a well-known farmer in Town Pella. Mr. Konkel was born on 24 January 1852 in Klein Brausen, Germany. He attended school in Hanover and served in 1872 to 1875 as a soldier in the East Prussian (Ukranian ?) Regiment No 8 Squadron 3 in the German-Eula war. He married Maria Strauchfeld on 20 Mar 1880. Their marriage was blessed with thirteen children of which seven have died and four sons and two daughters survive. In 1884, Mr. Konkel and his family came to America, settling first in Cleveland, Ohio and then in Pella where he has created a beautiful farm in the last thirty years by his diligence as a land man, a powerful testimony of his German hard work ethics and industry. He has remained a faithful member of Bethlehem Church until his death. The funeral was held on Thursday, 8 October with Pastor E. Stubenvoll officiating. Survivors include his wife, four sons Johann, Paul, Heinrich and Willie and two daughters Mrs. Augusta Rades and Mrs. Mathilda Krause, also nine grandchildren, a brother, Gottfried Konkel and Mrs. Maria Harbath. V.W. Thurs 19 Nov 1914, Page 33 GIDSON, David, a hunter by a camp, lost his life in Sawyer Lake by Antigo with a deer. The tragic event came to light on Tuesday when the body was found after a two day futile search. The head of this unfortunate hunter looked horrible, his arms and body was covered with wounds and also the clothes were hanging on the body in pieces. The body was found in deep water. Gibson, who was hunting with his brother, followed a deer to the lake. The wounded animal plunged into the lake and Gibson followed, in spite of darkness was setting in. His brother heard him screaming for help but the darkness hindered him. A search on the lake was made by boat but neither the deer nor his brother was found at that time. Scheil in Town Richmond. The funeral was held on the following Wednesday at St Jakobi Lutheran Church in Richmond with Pastor Stuth officiating. Thurs 17 Dec 1914, Tigerton, (from last week), Page 13 RUPPENTHAL, Philipp (widow of) has died last week. ***********************. FROEMMNG, Wm (Mrs.) has been called away in death. The deceased has received her schooling and was confirmed in the area of her birth. In 1858 she married Mr. Laars who has died many years ago. There were nine children born into this marriage, of which six have preceded their mother into eternity. In 1879 she married her now surviving husband, Wm. Froemming. They came to America in 1883 and have lived here since then. The deceased had always enjoyed good health until last spring when she became ill until Saturday when she quietly and peacefully was taken in death at the age of seventy-eight years. Besides her husband, who survives, there is a son, Fr. Laars, also two daughters, Mrs. Fritz Kroenke in Fremont and Mrs Ernst Hoeft in Ainsbee.
