(Written after July 13, 1855 and before January 17, 1856)Yellow Fever!!
During the summer of 1855 it pleased God to visit the city of Portsmouth with a scourge, more destructive than has ever before been known in this country. About 1200 human beings, in the short space of four months, were hurried into eternity. All the churches were called to suffer the loss of active and useful members, but no church perhaps, in this place, according to members, has been more afflicted than our own beloved little Zion — Eleven persons, most of them distinguished for piety and efficiency, are now numbered with the dead. Among these are our noble and devoted brethren Lewis W. Boutwell and Dr. John W. H. Trugien — we deeply mourn their loss; this shall ___ it ___ —The following is a list of those who died of the yellow fever, viz:
Dr. John W. H. Trugien

Emma A. Singleton
Laura A. Reed

During the summer of 1855 the yellow fever, in an epidemic form, prevailed in Norfolk. The first cases known occurred on July 15 and the last death Dec [smudged - is Nov meant?] 13. From the middle of August to the last of September the fever raged with unexampled violence -- not less than 2000 whites and from 3 to 4 hundred colored people dying from this disease. From July 15 to Nov. 13 the following members of the Presbyterian church died, all but the first mentioned and probably the last also, of the Fever.
