John Tunis

John Tunis
Who was born in Newtown, L. I., Nov. 18, 1803,
and died in this city of the prevailing epidemic, September 19, 1855.
Sacred to the memory of John Tunis, philanthropist and merchant prince of Norfolk.
This monument was erected by the citizens of Norfolk in grateful memory and as a
loving tribute to one who gave his life in ministering to this stricken community during the
prevailing epidemic . . . remaining in the city attending and administering to the wants
of the sick until he himself fell a victim to its ravages.
Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends.
He was respected and esteemed by all who know him for his integrity and virture
and faithful discharge of all the duties devolving upon him either in public or private
life. He was intimately associated with the improvements of the City and took a
deep interest in everything tending to her advancement. The community of which he
was a valued and influential member for 23 years mourn his death as a public loss.
He died perfectly resigned in the hope of a blissful immortality. He was a loving husband
and indulgent parent and a sincere friend.
