Dorchester County M'd
October 25, 1855

Sir

On the 5th of this month Commodore McKeever kindly granted me a leave of absence for one month, after the Yellow Fever had ceased to be an epidemic and the citizen patients had left the hospital at Portsmouth.

As I am afraid it will be dangerous to take my family back again to the Hospital for some time to come, and I should also like very much to have some time to (recover?) my health in, I earnestly beg the Department to extend my leave to another month.

By granting this request you will confer a particular kindness and favor upon me. I most resepctfully request an immediate answer, as it will be necessary for me to leave on the 3rd of November in the event of my not hearing from the Department by the 1st.

I am with great respect
your ob't serv't
Thos B Steele
P'd Asst Surgeon
U. S. Navy
