GENERAL
INDEX
INTRODUCTION
Hampton Roads has a rich history and many heroes whose stories are poignant and courageous, especially during the epidemic of 1855. As a volunteer with the Sargeant Memorial Room at Kirn Memorial Library, I was asked by City Historian Peggy Haile McPhillips to transcribe the 1855 Richmond Dispatch epidemic articles. The task was formidable as the microfilm was made from old newspapers and the type is not always clear. Thank you, Peggy, for your encouragement and assistance. The articles needed to be located in each edition, then copied and brought home for transcription, which always took place under a lighted magnification. This took about six months or more. Upon completion of the transcription, it seemed as though this was an incomplete chapter about a people and time. These folks were becoming important to me, the entire scope of their story needed to be explored and most of all they needed to be celebrated in life and death. So I embarked on finding any other materials that pertained to the epidemic which included books, records, magazine and newspaper articles, diaries, letters, sermons and illustrations, etc. The final phase of research took place in the local cemeteries, locating as many gravestones as possible of those who died in the summer and fall of 1855.
The yellow fever Internet site was constructed almost on a daily basis as new material was found. USGenWeb Archives has most graciously provided space for this massive site. Special thanks to state coordinators Joe Patterson of Pennsylvania and Mike DeLoach of Virginia for advising me in the construction of this site.
I am grateful to Archivist Robert B. Hitchings of the Sargeant Memorial Room for his valuable assistance in locating books, pictures, and most of all for the extra fine details of what was going on in Norfolk and Portsmouth in 1855. Mr. Hitchings spent many hours with me in the local cemeteries, first showing me how to research their cemetery records, how to navigate the cemeteries and locate plots and then helping to gather information off the weather-beaten gravestones. I am grateful to Mr. Hitchings for opening doors to many gracious homes in Tidewater of those who had lost loved ones due to the epidemic and who wanted to share their treasured pictures. I would like to recognize Troy Valos, Assistant Archivist of the Sargeant Memorial Room, for help in locating materials.
I am also grateful to Edith Carmichael of the Portsmouth History Room in providing epidemic material and insight on Portsmouth cemetery records. Special thanks to Jennifer Davis McDaid of the Library of Virginia for allowing her research on this site and providing assistance in locating material. Thanks to David R. Goldfield of UNC for granting permission to use his article from Virginia Cavalcade and to Lara Hamilton for granting permission to use her thesis at The College of William and Mary. Thank you David Brown of Virginia Beach for sharing your expertise in reading weathered tombstone inscriptions. Thank you Glennon Harrison for sharing a field trip to the Naval Hospital and also providing material on your ancestor Dr. James Harrison and help in locating Dr. J. D. Bryant's book. Thank you staff of Mariner's Museum Library for providing key pictures for the site.
Thank you Robert Kirby for all your help as Superintendent of Cemeteries and your very patient staff. Thank you Bob Clark of the City of Norfolk's Department of Public Works map department for providing maps and history for this site. Thank you Susan Jordan for providing a medal given to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital physicians for many of us to see and photograph. Thanks too to the staff of Laural Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia for your gracious assistance when visiting there. Thank you Public Affairs Department of Portsmouth Naval Hospital for your escort on field trips to the hospital there and providing guided tours. Thank you Norman Grefe of the City of Norfolk's Vector Control for sharing historical material. (This last has yet to be posted.) Very special thanks to all the families who have shared pictures and stories of your ancestors.

Instructions on how to use this index:
Note 1: A date given as 7-30 indicates the date on which the information was given in the newspaper. An exact date of death (if known) reads as "died July 30, 1855," and when it appeared in the newspaper will follow in parentheses. In the Dispatch if a name appears under correspondence, check the date when it was sent to the newspaper for more accurate dating. Many times correspondence information predates the newspaper date and so a death may appear before an announcement of an illness. Compiling is made in the order of appearance in the newspaper. Checking the dates will help determine whether two differently spelled names may possibly be the same person. Infrequently a person may be reported dead but had recovered. All dates are 1855 unless stated otherwise.
Note 2: There may be duplications of names (example: One time appear as Miss and another time with a first name.) ALL NAMES ARE ALPHABETIZED INCLUDING THE PREFIX but not the suffix Esq.
Note 3: (2) after date means name appears twice [or more] in that day's newspaper.
Note 4: The Dispatch is from microfiche and sometimes the print is difficult to read. Check names in brackets for various spellings that the transcriber/compiler feels may be the same person. Names and comments in parentheses are direct from newspaper, whereas words and comments in brackets originate with the compiler. Choices of which names might be duplicates was determined by the compiler according to the date of entry.
Note 5: The Baltimore American list of Portsmouth deaths 9-21 includes many Mr., Mrs. or Miss names but gives no dates so it was difficult for the compiler to calculate who the real person might be against the indexed names. But checking the American list against names with known death dates it was ascertained that this list was chronologically compiled and an attempt was made to discern some Miss, Mrs. and Mr. names. The Portsmouth Naval Hospital fatality list, also listed chronologically, only included August 1855 deaths, so a full or partial name was more easily identified.
Note 6: NRD indicates Norfolk Register of Deaths, NCRD indicates Norfolk Country Register of Deaths. If entry in this index is close (name and date) to one in NRD, a "#.." will be suggested. After #625 in the NRD most of the names/deaths were reported after the fact and so compiler's identification ended with #625. There are probably more matches to be made between compiler's index and the death registers but death dates do not match close enough.
Note 7: The Addendum to the General Index includes names of people known to have died of yellow fever in 1855 but do not appear in either the General Index or Registers of Death.
Note 8: For those researching the newspaper files online, use your browser find mechanism to locate a name in the following:July 24 - August 22, 1855
