Marriage Certificate of Daniel Jenkins and Phebe Shaver



PAGE 1:

"Know all men by these presents that we Daniel Jenkins and Hugh Irvine, Jr. of Rockbridge County are held and firmly bound unto William B. Giles, Governor or the Commonwealth of Virginia in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to which payments well and truly to be made to this said governor and his successors in office for the use of the said Commonwealth.  We bind ourselves our heirs executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents.

Witness our hands and seals this 29 day of January, 1828.  The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Daniel Jenkins and Phebe Shaver, daughter of John Shafer of the County of Rockbridge.

If there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct the same, then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in free force."

PAGE 2:

"I John Shaver of the County of Rockbridge do hereby acknowledge myself to be satisfied and do give my consent that a marriage shall take place between Daniel Jenkins and my daughter Pheby Shaver and the Clerk of Rockbridge County is hereby authorized and required to give a license that their service may be celebrated.  Given under my hand and seal this 29 Day of January, 1828."




PAGE 3:

"Clerks office Rockbridge County Court.
        This day Hugh Irvine one of the witnesses to the within certificate personally appeared before one a deputy clerk for said county in said office and made oath that the within named John Shafer signed sealed and acknowledged the within certificate of marriage in his presence and also in the presence of the other seals on being witness thereto as his act and Deed.

        Given under my hand this 29th day of January in the year 1828."

NOTES:

[signed] means an actual signature appeared.
[seal] means the individual left their seal.

Phebe Shafer appears in many documents with variations in spellings.  Some are noted in this document.  The Shafer family frequently has variations with their last name, noteably interchanging the "F" with a  "V".  Philip Shafer (listed in the document as "Philip Sheffer") is one of Phebe's brothers, who was approximately 14 at the time.
