St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery was established in 1854 on 30 acres of land adjacent to the Virginia Zoological Park and had the distinction of being placed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register as a historic district in 2001.
Though the cemetery primarily serves the Catholic parishes of Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, anyone may purchase lots for themselves or loved ones regardless of religious affiliation. Ground burial spaces and columbarium spaces are available but at the present time the garden mausoleum is filled. A new chapel mausoleum housing 504 crypts and 104 niches is now open and located at the Church Street entrance.
The cemetery is open to the public every day from sunrise to sunset. Additional information or a cemetery tour may be obtained by contacting Superintendent Alesia Raper at 757-627-2874.
