Nansemond County was originally known as Upper Norfolk County when formed in 1637.
Its name was changed in 1646, for the Nansemond Indians who lived in the area.
The county seat was Suffolk.
A portion of land (north of Chuckatuck Creek) was ceded to Isle of Wight Co. in 1769.
The land west of the Blackwater River became part of Southampton Co.
The county was incorporated as the independent City of Nansemond in 1972,
and became extinct when it merged with the city of Suffolk in 1974.
