One of Virginia's original shires formed in 1634, Isle of Wight County was originally known as Warrosquyoake.
Its name was changed in 1637, for the island off England's southern coast.
The county seat is Isle of Wight (formerly called Isle of Wight Courthouse).
Isle of Wight Co. was the parent county of Southampton (formed 1749), having previously ceded
a portion of land to Brunswick Co., which land later became part of Greensville (formed 1780).
