INDEXES.
General Index * Doctors, their families & druggists * Nurses & volunteers * Ministers and families * African Americans * Prisoners * Dated Statistics * Cemeteries * Orphans * Medal.

Instructions on how to use this index:

Note 1: A date given as 7-30 indicates the date on which the information was given in the newspaper. An exact date of death (if known) reads as "died July 30, 1855," and when it appeared in the newspaper will follow in parentheses. In the Dispatch if a name appears under correspondence, check the date when it was sent to the newspaper for more accurate dating. Many times correspondence information predates the newspaper date and so a death may appear before an announcement of an illness. Compiling is made in the order of appearance in the newspaper. Checking the dates will help determine whether two differently spelled names may possibly be the same person. Infrequently a person may be reported dead but had recovered. All dates are 1855 unless stated otherwise.
Note 2:
There may be duplications of names (example: One time appear as Miss and another time with a first name.) ALL NAMES ARE ALPHABETIZED INCLUDING THE PREFIX but not the suffix Esq.
Note 3:
(2) after date means name appears twice [or more] in that day's newspaper.
Note 4:
The Dispatch is from microfiche and sometimes the print is difficult to read. Check names in brackets for various spellings that the transcriber/compiler feels may be the same person. Names and comments in parentheses are direct from newspaper, whereas words and comments in brackets originate with the compiler. Choices of which names might be duplicates was determined by the compiler according to the date of entry.
Note 5:
The Baltimore American list of Portsmouth deaths 9-21 includes many Mr., Mrs. or Miss names but gives no dates so it was difficult for the compiler to calculate who the real person might be against the indexed names. But checking the American list against names with known death dates it was ascertained that this list was chronologically compiled and an attempt was made to discern some Miss, Mrs. and Mr. names. The Portsmouth Naval Hospital fatality list, also listed chronologically, only included August 1855 deaths, so a full or partial name was more easily identified.
Note 6:
NRD indicates Norfolk Register of Deaths, NCRD indicates Norfolk Country Register of Deaths. If entry in this index is close (name and date) to one in NRD, a "#.." will be suggested. After #625 in the NRD most of the names/deaths were reported after the fact and so compiler's identification ended with #625. There are probably more matches to be made between compiler's index and the death registers but death dates do not match close enough.
Note 7:
For those researching the newspaper files online, use your browser find mechanism to locate a name in the following:

August 30 - September 5
September 6 - 11
