Alleghany County
Alleghany County was formed in 1822 from parts of Botetourt, Bath, and Monroe Counties. (Monroe became a West Virginia County in 1862.) The county seat, Covington, is located on the Jackson River. Other principal cities of Alleghany County are Clifton Forge (originally Williamson) and Iron Gate. The Alleghany name was a derivation of the Native American name for the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers.
The USGenweb Archives Project for Alleghany County is up for adoption. If you would like to help maintain this county, email Donna Bluemink for more information.
