Sitton (Nebo) originally was conceived as a church and eventually a cemetery. In the family stories it is said that at the place where the cemetery is located, the back fences of three farms connected. All three farmers donated approximately five acres each for the church and cemetery. Unfortunately, they never recorded it with Smith County. Mr. James Fair (the land owner at the time of our search) in later years agreed to permit the cemetery the land that it now sits on. At one time there was large number of iron stone rocks used as grave markers. They are abundant in the area. The care takers removed all of the rock markers and stacked them at a location within the graveyard as marked. Those were eventually cast outside the fence. The only markers left are commercial made. We know through family bible records of some of the unmarked graves; however, we don't know where in the cemetery they are located. The GIBSON plot was marked with pipe, but, no one is sure if anyone was ever buried there. Mr. & Mrs. S.R. Kirkley - June 2007 |
