Subject: BenBull Tombstone Inscription - JoyMohler Cemetery, Bull Springs, Goldwaithe, Mills County, Texas Photo Info Posted By: Roger Bull -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date Posted: Jan 27, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Description: The inscription reads: A precious one from us is gone. The voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our home... That never can be filled. "We miss the sushine of thy face. The loving tender care. Our home is dark without thee. We miss thee everywhere." Although it is not documented, this is Eliza Jane Spark Bull's style of writing. The tragedy reads like a Paul Harvey "Rest of the story." One of the stories that Rosemary relayed to me from Mr. Mazanec was about the death of Ambrose Carroll Bull's grandson, Benjamin Bull. It seems that Ben was ill when a cattle drive was about to begin. Eliza Jane warned Ambrose that the boy, aged 22 at the time, probably should not make the drive. Ambrose objected saying that his favorite grandson was man enough to overcome a little illness. As things turned out, Eliza was correct. Ben died. Ambrose was so broken-up about the situation that he not only buried the young man in a prominent place in the cemetery; but, he also made arrangements for a burial oblisk to be placed on top of Ben's gravestone. That would make his tombstone the highest in the cemetery. Unfortunately, Ambrose died before he could mount the oblisk. Mr. Mazanec found the oblisk laying on the ground next to the tombstone. He placed it in a leaning position on one of the nearby trees until he can mount the oblisk in its intended position above the gravestone of Benjamin Bull. (BTW, Ben died of typho-malaria.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date Taken: 3 Jan 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Place Taken: Joy-Mohler Cemetery, Bull Springs, Goldwaithe, Mills County, Texas -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Owner: Rosemary Bradley Davis --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
