Land for the present Pattison Cemetery was given under the following circumstances: Mr. Cape Dewitt came to Mr. George M. Pattison's home late one night & told him that his brother-in-law, Mr. Tom Kerr, had died & there was no place to bury him. Mr. Pattison inquired of Mr. Dewitt the reason as to why this burial could not be made in the James T. Pattison Family Cemetery which his father had given for that purpose.
The following story emerged: The land belonging to James T. Pattison was inherited by his sons & daughter. The Frank Pattison family had been living in the home with his parents before their deaths, & he was given the land where the cemetery was located. Frank Pattison had died & his wife Lucy had remarried a Mr. Stocking. She informed Mr. Dewitt that the land now belonged to her, & not another person was to be buried in the cemetery.
Mr. Pattison allowed the burial of said Mr. Tom Kerr on a piece of land located on the Hempstead-Pattison Road about one-half mile north of the town of Pattison. Subsequently, in 1889 Mr. Pattison & his wife gave 4 3/4 acres of land in the same area for a burial ground for the citizens of Pattison & the surrounding community.
