WALKER,of Ripley,died Wednesday in LeBonheur Hospital,Memphis.She would have
been elven months old Thursday.Services were Thursday in First Methodist
Church,Ripley,burial in Memorial Gardens.She also leaves a brother,Charles Don
Walker; a sister,Patricia Lorraine Walker; both at home; her grandparents,Mr.&
Mrs.William H.WALKER of Ripley,and Mr.& Mrs.Robert C.WILLIAMS of Fort Pillow.

JANUARY 21,1966 DEATH---Mrs.John PARRISH,widow of the late John M.PARRISH,Sr.
died last Friday in the home of her daughter,Mrs.Jay Cody FANKBONER,in
Salem,IL,she was 93.Services and burial in Fulton,KY.She was a resident of Halls
many years before she moved to Weakley Co.,in the 1930's.Her husband,Halls
farmer and the former State Senator,died Jan.12,1953.She also leaves two other
daughters,Miss Rebecca PARRISH,of Memphis,and Mrs.Weldon FISHER of Fort
Worth,Texas; three sons,Emmett Lee PARRISH,of Memphis, Dr.J.M.PASRRISH,Jr.,of
Okla. City,Okla.,and Thaddeus PARRISH,of Fulton,KY.

JANUARY 21,1966 NEWS OF 25 YEARS AGO; JANUARY 17,1941---Rev.John Watson
WATERS,one of the beat loved ministers in the Memphis Conference,who had served
50 years as a minister of the gospel before his retirement 12 years ago,died
Sunday morning in his home in Ripley.He was 87.The $75,000 brick and stone
veneer Methodist Church building here stands as a monument to his love and
devotion for religion and was built under his pastorate.He served as pastor here
for four years and delivered the first sermon in the new structure in 1914.
Six sons in the registration and three single and elegible for military
training,with one married and who will probably not ask for deferment on basis
of dependents is a record; so believes H.D.CALDWELL,Lauderdale County
Representative of the Production Credit Association and his wife,Mrs.Cora BYRN
CALDWELL.Three of their sons,Felix Preston CALDWELL and H.D.CALDWELL,Jr.,of
Ripley and John CALDWELL are single and waiting call from their local
board.Billy CALDWELL,clerk at the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville,is married and
has a son,but probably will not ask for deferment on grounds of
dependents.Walter CALDWELL,farmer,who has two children,has been placed in Class
3-A. Milton CALDWELL,operator of a filling station in Nashville is married and
has a young son,he has not been classified.John Caldwell is employed in the
Stinson Aircraft Tubing Dept.They have another son,Bobby CALDWELL,age 20,at
home,who expects to volunteer. A.M.DURHAM celebrated his 90th birthday Saturday
at his home in Durhamville. __END OF 1941__

JANUARY 21,1966 DEATH---Eddie Eugene THURMOND,Halls ginner,died last Thursday in
Kennedy Hospital,Memphis,he was 56.Services were Saturday in Gates Baptist
Church,burial in Thurmond Cem.A lifelong Lauderdale Countian,he was a WWII
vet,and a member of the American Legion.He leaves a brother,Neil THURMOND; seven
nephews and nine neices.

JANUARY 21,1966 DEATH---Mrs.Iva GRIER,who was born in Ripley,died of a heart
attack Tuesday in the home of a daughter,Miss Ruby STEVENS in Memphis.She was
70.Graveside services were Wednesday in Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis.She had
lived in Memphis most of her life where she operated a boarding house until
1955.Her husband died in 1962.She also leaves another daughter,Mrs.J.B.HUNTER of
Memphis; a son,Leonard A.STEVENS of Lomite,Calif.; a grandson and a great-
grandson.

JANUARY 21,1966 DEATH---Miss Josie Onie DEVINNEY,of Ripley,died at 1 a.m.last
Friday in Western State Hospital in Bolivar,where she had been a patient 23
years.She was 81.Services were in Garner Funeral Home,burial in Woodville
Cemetery.She leaves several cousins,neices and nephews.

JANUARY 21,1966 DEATH---Mrs.Sallie Elizabeth BLACKWELL,operator of Rains Hotel
in Henning,died Wednesday in the hotel after 3 months illness,she was
93.Services will be in Garner Funeral Home,burial in Poplar Grove Cemetery.Her
husband,Edgar M.BLACKWELL died in 1940.She leaves two sisters,Misses Annie and
Mary RAINS,both of Henning.

JANUARY 28,1966 CROSS IS BURNED---A red-robed Ku Klux Klansman led about ten
shirvering young men and one woman in partially burning a ten foot cross in a
snowy field west of Highway 51,two miles West of Gates at 9 p.m.Wednesday.A
Klansman photographed the group with hands upraised as they recited oaths.The
cross was only partially burned before the group sought warmer quarters.The Klan
spokesman said the group was prostesting what he termed "harrassment" of the
Klan members in this vicinity by the FBI representatives,who have been active
here in interviews with Klansmen and their associates.

Joe WHITE's Barber Shop.  Miss Irma OLDHAM left Monday for Indianapolis,Ind.to
study millinery.  Will POWELL of Lightfoot,and Miss Addie FOSTER of
Plumpoint,who were recently married in Osceola,AR,are now living at Plumpoint.
W.T.SAVAGE,son of Rev.Frank SAVAGE of Flippen,has accepted a position as
assistant cashier of the Farmers Union Bank of Ripley. Wade Hampton MARLEY,half-
brother of Mrs.M.H.SCOTT and the late Capt.Joe C.MARLEY,of Ripley,died in San
Saba,Tex.January 11th in his 96th year.Mrs.SCOTT is herself 91 years of age,and
Capt.MARLEY was 2 years her senior when he died a few years ago.  At sunset on
Thursday,January 18th at the First Baptist Church in Ripley,the marriage of Miss
Frances PALMER and L.H.DOOLEY was solemnized,the date being the anniversary of
the bride's parents.Ushers were R.H.DOOLEY of Knoxville,Dr.Joe B.LACKEY,Paul
SAVAGE and Edward YOUNG of this city.Nuptial music was rendered by Miss
Katherine Klutts,Rev.J.W.Storer was the officiant.

months ago died last Friday in Tipton County Hospital,about 2 hours after his
car was struck by an Illinois Central Freight Train at a crossing just off
Highway 51 North near Ralph Concrete Works,where he was employed.The train
struck the rear of the car,FISHER was thrown from the car.Services were Sunday
in Garner Funeral Home,burial in Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Brownsville.He
leaves his wife,Mrs.Frances Elizabeth FISHER;his mother,Mrs.Myrtle FINCHER of
near Ripley; a son,Donald Ray FISHER of Memphis; two daughters,Lisa Ann FISHER

FEBRUARY 4,1966 FROM OUR FILES;FEBRUARY 2,1917--Mrs.R.J.HUMPHREYS attended the
funeral of Mrs.S.G.LEE in Gates Monday.  Miss Amelia SANFORD of Henning,left
Monday for Memphis,where she will study art.  Miss Frances ANDERSON has accepted
a position as bookkeeper for Wm.TUCKER & Co.  A pretty wedding of unusual
interest was solemnized in the home of the bride's mother in Henning Saturday
afternoon,January 27th,at five-thirty o'clock when Mrs.Mary Frances TURNER gave
in marriage her daughter,Sue Elizabeth TURNER to Mr.Walter B.DRAKE.Rev.James
F.DEW officiated.The attendants were Miss Miriam TURNER,sister of the bride,who
served as maid of honor,and Mr.Charles PORTER as best man.Mrs.Charles Flowers
presided at the piano and rendered "Hearts and Flowers." The groom is assistant
cashier at the Bank of Henning.  It was twenty years ago last Saturday(January
27,1897 being the eventful day)since Mr.William TUCKER Jr.,claimed as his
bride,Miss Lelia SCOTT,and to honor the occasion of their twentieth
anniversary,a large company of guests,the greater majority of whom were those
who witnessed the wedding ceremony-assembled in their lovely home to rejoice in
the good fortune which has spared them these many years,a blessing to
themselves,an honor to society,an inspitation to the young manhood and womanhood
of our fair little town,and a king and queen indeed in their home and in the
hearts of their friends.-It was a few minutes after eight o'clock when the
strains of Mendelssohn's Wedding March,played by Mrs.James A.PORTER arrested the
attention of the gay and happy throng,and at once every eye was fastened upon
the bridal couple of the long ago as they descended the stairway,preceded by
C.C.PARTEE and Lucian BRODIE,the only ones present of a company of fifteen,who
composed the original bridal party.-Taking their positions in front of the
Rev.R.W.HOOD,who had the honor to officiate at their wedding,Mr.& Mrs.TUCKER
heard again from his lips a message replete in its beautiful tribute to the holy
estate of matrimony.

of W.A.PERRY of Halls,has been killed in combat action near DaNang,Viet Nam,his
family was informed Sunday.He was the son of Mrs.Bertha BEDWELL of near
Friendship.He had been scheduled to leave Viet Nam February 6th.He had been in
the Marines since June,1964 and in Viet Nam eleven months.He was the first
Crockett County casualty in the war.(February 11th issue--Services were Thursday

this week imposed penitentiary sentences on a Unionville couple charged in
numerous thefts in this county.Ira Lee LOVELL was given three to five years on
each of eight burglary counts,sentences running concurrently.His wife,Mary
LOVELL received concurrant sentences of one to three years on each of three
counts of receiving stolen property of under $100 value.   Ripley theatre and
cafe operator Aubrey WEBB,charged with murder and carrying a pistol after the
fatal shooting of Billy Joe SANDERS,29,in The Pit on South Main in Ripley
December 11th,1965; went before the grand jury Monday.The jury refused a true
bill in the murder charge,but indicted WEBB for carrying a pistol.The pistol
charge was then retired from the docket,with leave to reinstate,on the motion of
attorney general Will Terry ABERNATHY.

born at Curve,died at 7:25 p.m.last Thursday in John Gaston
Hospital,Memphis,three hours after having been struck by a car as he stepped
from behind a parked car on Latham,less than a block from his home.He was
knocked 38 feet by the passing car.The driver of the car,Oscar F.WILLIAMS,39,a
negro of Memphis told officers he did not see Mr.PARKER in time to
stop.Witnesses confirmed his story.The car skidded 49 feet downhill on the
street before striking Mr.PARKER.Services were in Memphis Funeral Home,burial in
Forest Hill Cemetery.He moved to Memphis 30 years ago,retired in 1954 as
watchman at the Federal Compress & Warehouse Co.He leaves a daughter,Mrs.Louise

Saturday in LeBonheur Hospital,Memphis,hours after her father and uncle had
rushed her there with the help of a police escort,shortly after she was born in
Lauderdale County Clinic in Ripley.Tifford BROWN,POOL's brother-in-law was
stopped Saturday as he sped through Memphis at 60 miles per hour en route to the
hospital,Police provided an escort the rest of the way.The baby was placed in an
incubator,but all efforts to save her failed.

MARCH 4,1966 HIT AND RUN DRIVER--James A.CAMPBELL,25,of Rt.1,Halls,an employee
of Custom-Craft Mfg.in Halls,was killed about 6 p.m.Saturday when struck by a
hit and run driver on Highway 51 near the north city limits of
Covington,according to chief deputy sheriff Preston SHANKLE.Clyde
PUTNAM,35,Covington industrial worker and G.T.STEGALL,36,Mason mechanic,were
charged with murder Monday and released under $1,250 bonds.PUTNAM is alleged to
have been the driver and STEGALL a passenger in the car that struck CAMPBELL as
he was standing beside a car in which he had been a passenger before the car ran
out of gas.CAMPBELL was talking to Miss Jean WATTS of Halls,who was in the
car,while their companions,Wm.PUCKETT,of Halls and Bill HIPPS of Dyersburg had
gone for gas.Services for CAMPBELL were in Obion Chapel Church of Christ,burial

carried to Brownsville Hospital Friday after being struck by a car said to have
been driven by D.W.ROSS. AMMONS was walking on Highway 19 and the accident was
said to have been unavoidable.AMMONS suffered a broken leg and severe bruises.

MARCH 4,1966 DEATH--Miss Pearl SPARKS,former Ripley Newspaperwoman who was a
retired member of the staff of Florence,AL State College,died December 21st in
Florence; Lauderdale County friends learned this week.Her family founded The
Ripley Weekley News in 1871,and she was associated with it until it ended
publication in 1913.For some time she was The Enterprise's Society Editor.In
1918,she went to Florence,where her brother,Will M.SPARKS had become associated
with the Times.She was its cociety editor,then worked in an insurance
office,then to the business office of Florence College.After 8 years,she became
head of its news bureau and directed it 18 years.She "retired" in 1948.

killed in an auto accident at noon Saturday when his car crashed into an
oncoming truck at the Wolf River Bridge on North Watkins,Memphis.He was
36.Services were Monday in Garner Funeral Home,burial in Mount Pleasant
Cemetery.Born in Hamilton County,he moved to Ripley at the age of four and to
Memphis ten years ago.He was an engineer for Southern Towing Company in

MARCH 18,1966 FATALLY INJURED BY ROLLING TRUCK--Janie Marie HUTCHERSON,two-and
a-half year old daughter of Dale and Linda HUTCHERSON,was fatally injured
Saturday afternoon when her father's unloaded and unattended two-ton truck
rolled over her in the front yard of the home of her grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.John
HUTCHERSON,at Dry Hill. The child was pronounced dead with a fractured skull on
arrival at Parkview Hospital,Dyersburg.Mr.HUTCHERSON was at Parkview Hospital to
take his wife and new baby home when he learned of the tragedy.MR.HUTCHERSON
drove his truck into the yard of his parents where the child was playing.He got
out of the truck and into a car to go to Parkview.After the farmer had left
home,the truck began rolling rearward,striking the child and killing her
instantly.Services were at 3 p.m.Sunday in Dry Hill Assembly of God Church.The
Rev.Hilton GRIMES officiated,burial was in Dry Hill Cemetery.She also leaves her
maternal grandparents,MR.& MRS.Thomas MULLIGAN,of Central,and three sisters.

JAMES,died suddenly at 4:15 a.m.last Friday at her home in Ripley.She was
69.Born in Louisville,MS,she had lived in Nut Bush five years before moving here
a year & half ago.She also leaves three brothers,C.D.DOSS of Ripley,C.M.DOSS of
Memphis and J.D.DOSS of Brooksville,MS; two sisters,Mrs.J.E.TRANSUE of Memphis
and Mrs.H.C.THORN of Greensboro,NC.

MARCH 25,1966 SICK & AILING--Aulsey VOWELL Jr.,of Jonesboro,Ark.,former
Riplian,has been transferred from the intensive care unit of Methodist
Hospital,Memphis to St.Bernard Hospital in Jonesboro.Mr.VOWELL has been in the
hospital since January 31st with injuries received when a train hit his car in
Jonesboro.He has never regained consciousness.  Mrs.J.Guy HENDERSON is in
Lauderdale County Hospital with a broken collar bone and bruises received in a
collision with a car driven by Read JORDAN of Henning on Highway 51 South last
Sunday.

at Gold Dust-a total loss.  Tuesday,2:15,bridge on the Old Burks Road between
Henning and Fort Pillow.Bridge a total loss.  The home of Mr.& Mrs.Owen NICKS
and six children,who moved from Ripley to Dresdan two years ago,was completely
destroyed by fire at 7 a.m. Wednesday of last week.The family escaped injury,but
all the house furnishings were lost in the fire.

April 8,1928.Services were in the First Baptist Church in Halls,of which she was

Covington,he moved to Lauderdale County in 1942,and served as Gold Dust

returned to Ripley Wednesday afternoon and she and her son left for their home
in Florida Sunday morning.  Franklin A. "Sonny" JACKSON, B.M.S.N.,arrived in
Long Beach,Calif.March 2nd aboard the U.S.S.Carter Hall,after a year's sea duty
in Viet Nam and other ports in the Far East.He spent last week here with his
mother,Mrs.Virginia CONRAD,and has now returned to the ship in Long Beach for
further orders.

Friday morning with a serious case of spinal meningitis.CURRIE,a freshman in
Lauderdale County High School is reported to be improving.His close contacts
received protective period,and the incubation period has elapsed without any

Greenfield,she had lived in Detroit four years.Her husband,R.L.CHAMBERS died in

APRIL 8,1966 HELD AS BURGLARS OF RIPLEY SCHOOL--The sheriff's office and Ripley
police worked jointley to obtain search warrants which led to the arrests
Saturday of two men in thefts Monday night of last week at the Ripley Grammer
School.Bound over to Circuit Court on $500 bonds were Wade YOCHUM of Highway 51
South,Ripley,and Claxton CHIPMAN,in whose home just south of Crosstown on
Highway 51 in Tipton County,were found a television set,adding machine,and
frozen meat which officers said was taken from the school.Most of the stolen
goods,valued at $525,has been recovered,officers report.

of a truck which collided with a car and killed Truman WARREN,Sr.,at
Morrilton,Ark.,in June 1964,has been cleared by a federal jury in Little
Rock,Ark.,in a $210,000 lawsuit.WARD and Mauck Construction Co.,Henderson,Texas
were named in the suit.WARD worked for the firm.

crash near Munford Sunday afternoon when an elderly man pulled out in front of
Mrs.WOOD at a crossing.No one was seriously injured,but their car was badly
damaged.  Mr.& Mrs.Curtis DOWNS of Memphis spent Sunday with her parents,Mr.&
Mrs.Guilford GREAVES.  Mr.& Mrs.Bennie BURNS were called to Garland Sunday by
the death of a friend,Mrs.Eva Frances SHANKLE.She suffered a heart attack while
getting ready for church.  Mr.& Mrs.Calvin CANNON's home was destroyed by fire
Saturday.

Ripley,was arrested in Miami,Fla.,Tuesday on Wyoming charges of assault with
intent to commit murder as he appeared at an inquest in which Peace Justice Ruth
SUTTON reserved ruling on the shotgun death of his wife,Ailene BRAY
KIRKPATRICK,30,formerly of Ripley,in their Hialeah,Fla.,home April 10th.The
peace justice said the inquest ruling would await filing of briefs by the
attorneys.Florida officers said the Wyoming charges,stemming from a supper-time
argument in the Ramshorn Inn in Dubois,Wyo.,April 4th,had nothing to do with
Mrs.KIRKPATRICK's death.Harold MEIER,prosecutor for Fremont Co.,in
Lander,Wyo.,said KIRKPATRICK wanted to "shoot it out" with a man named Dale
THOMPSON at the Inn."There had been some drinking," the prosecutor said."I don't
believe the two men knew each other before." The Inn owner,Robert LLOYD,and his
son,also fought with KIRKPATRICK, MEIER said.He said KIRKPATRICK was charged on
two other counts of aggravated assault and battery "for striking them with the
butt of a pistol."  The shotgun fired and killed his wife,KIRKPATRICK told his
wife,KIRKPATRICK told sheriff's deputies,as he removed it from its case after
his hunting trip to Wymoning.The gun discharged through the scabbard and struck
Mrs.KIRKPATRICK in the chest,detectives said.They said the shooting appeared
accidental.The couple's nine-year-old daughter,Vicki Lynn KIRKPATRICK,witnessed

bombing of a negro cafe in Halls which rattled windows and awakened sleepers
blocks away.Two occupants of the Charlie FISHER cafe on N.Front Street escaped
injury last Friday when the bomb,thrown from a car struck the north side of the
concrete cafe,shattering a window and damaging a roof.

Ripley,died Wednesday in Houston.He was 71.Russell RICE of Ripley,a nephew by

are pending.He leaves his wife,Mrs.Joe Betty MILLER JOHNSTON; and a

Mrs.Maurice GAINES of Henning,died Tuesday in Baptist Hospital,Memphis,after
long illness.She was 78.Services were in Memphis Funeral Home,burial in Memorial
Park.Born in Halls,she moved to Memphis about 35 years ago. Her husband,Charles
LeRoy STEVENS died about three years ago.She leaves two sons,Charles LeRoy
STEVENS Jr.,and Spencer B.STEVENS,both of Memphis; a daughter,Mrs.Eugene GROOME
of Memphis.

in Mt.Pleasant Cemetery.She had been ill since February.Born in Crockett
County,she had moved to Lauderdale County 60 years ago.She also leaves 3

Hospital,Dyersburg.She is convalsing from a broken pelvis and fractured right
arm suffered in a fall a few days ago.

6,1909,he was the youngest son of the late Eugene W. and Minnie O'GUINN
BRANDON.He was with Pure Oil Company until he retired in 1961 due to a heart
condition.He also leaves his wife,the former Jean SMITH of Pinson; a son,Michael

GRIFFIN.  Mrs.Laura PARRISH suffered a stroke Sunday and is critically ill at
her home.Her daughters,Mrs.Joe HALE of Arp,and Mrs.Cliffie GREAVES of Ripley are
with her.
