Pauline P. LOCKE, 91, of Orbisonia, died at 10:55 a.m. Thursday, April
1, 2004, at her home in Springfield Twp., Huntingdon County. Born March
3, 1913, in Fort Littleton, she was the daughter of the late Guard and
Olive (Fernberg) Anderson. She was united in marriage to Isaiah Locke
July 19, 1933, in Hagerstown, Md., by the Rev. J.M. Carter. Mr. Locke
preceded her in death April 7, 1982. She is survived by one sister,
Vaunlee Cline of Carlisle, and one brother, Charles Anderson of
Shippensburg, survive. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Mae
Eaton, Maxine Ankabrant and Shelvie Anderson; and five brothers: William
Anderson, Melvin Anderson, Estle Anderson, David Anderson and Boyd
Anderson. Mr. Locke was a member of the Walnut Grove Church of God,
Three Springs. She was also a member of the Orbisonia Chapter of the
Order of the Eastern Star. She owned and operated Locke's General Store
in Maddensville for over 60s years. Funeral services will be held April
6, at the Walnut Grove Church of God, Three Springs, with the Rev. Rocky
Shaal officiating. Interment will be made in Walnut Grove Cemetery,
Three Springs. 

Marlin B. KAUFFMAN, 78, of Blairs Mills, died April 1, 2004, at Woodland
Retirement Center in Orbisonia. Born March 14, 1926, in Port Royal, he
was the son of the late Jesse and Edna (Walters) Kauffman. He was united
in marriage to Martha A. Goshorn March 22, 1947, in Port Royal. He is
survived by his wife at home, one daughter Eileen Parsons of
Chambersburg, one son, Carl Kauffman of Fort Loudon; four grandchildren,
and four great-grandchildren. Four sisters survive: Iris Liskey of
Myerstown, Gloria Sieber of Mifflintown and Joan Yetter and Bernice
Page, both of Port Royal. Mr. Kauffman was a member of the Richvale
United Methodist Church, Blairs Mills, for the past 55 years. He was
very active in the church and its functions. He was also a life member
of the Shade Gap Area Volunteer Fire Co. and a member of the Tuscarora
Grange. Mr. Kauffamn was a veteran of World War II, serving with the
U.S. Navy from Aug. 10, 1944, to June 30, 1946. In 1982, he retired from
Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. Funeral services will be held
April 4, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home in Orbisonia, with the Rev.
Virginia Eminhizer officiating. Interment will be made in Shade Valley
Cemetery, Blairs Mills. 

Evelyn Jean HOCKENBERRY, 66, of Blairs Mills, died April 1, 2004, at her
home in Tell Twp., Huntingdon County. Born July 9, 1937, in Tell Twp,
she was the daughter of the late Robert and Marie (Kling) Jones. She was
united in marriage to Kenneth H. Hockenberry July 9, 1959. Mr.
Hockenberry preceded her in death June 12, 1998. She is survived by one
son and one daughter, David Hockenberry and Penny Hockenberry, both of
Blairs Mills, and three grandchildren. One sister, Audrey Robinson of
Blairs Mills survives. She was preceded in death by three brothers and
two sisters. Mrs. Hockenberry was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist
Church in Mifflintown. She was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services
will be held April 5, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia,
with Pastor Don Ehrlich officiating. Interment will be made in Nossville
Cemetery, Blairs Mills. 

Nicholas S. DAUGHERTY, 22, of Alexandria, Va., died April 1, 2004, as a
result of injuries received in a two-vehicle accident in Washington,
D.C. Born Aug. 8, 1981, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Staff
Sgt. Paul J. Daugherty, who died November 28, 1995, and Tammy DeArmit,
who survives in Poolesville, Md. Also survived are a daughter, Jordan
Taylor Daugherty of Alexandria, Va.; grandparents, Paul and Joan
Daugherty of Port Matilda and Janet and Arthur McGuire of Wisconsin;
great-grandmother, Ethel Leberfinger of Hollidaysburg; step-mother,
Bianca Daugherty of Alexandria, Va.; and step-father, Ken Campbell of
Pollesville, Md. He is survived by two stepbrothers, Julian and Kevin
Durrell of Alexandria, Va.; a half-sister, Cassandra Campbell of
Poolesville, Md.; and his companion, Kathleen Moran of Alexandria, Va.
Mr. Daugherty was of the Catholic faith. He had been a member of Boy
Scouts. He attended Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Va., and was
a graduate of the Lincoln Technical Institute of Maryland, where he
studied auto technology. Mr. Daugherty was employed at John Durrell
Construction in Alexandria, Va. Memorial services will be held April 10,
2004, at the Feller Memorial Home in Tyrone, with Samuel Reese
officiating. 

Marlin B. KAUFFMAN, 78, of HCR 61, Blairs Mills, died at 4 a.m.
Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Woodland Retirement Center in Orbisonia.
Born March 14, 1926, in Port Royal, he was the son of the late Jesse and

Edwin E. MILLER, 84, a resident of The Homestead at Westminster Woods,
Huntingdon, died April 1, 2004, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Oct. 25, 1919, in Hamburg, he was the son of the late
Wert and Lydia (Lynn) Miller. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Yoh
Nov. 15, 1941, in Ephrata by the Rev. A.R. Martin. Mrs. Miller preceded
him in death April 5, 2001. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Bishop
Elvina Miller of Ghana, West Africa, a niece, Pastor Myrna Y. Speck of
Huntingdon; and a nephew, Lyle Miller of Rio Rico, Ariz. He is also
survived by several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in
death by a sister, Rachel Hess, and a brother, Harrison F. Miller. Mr.
Miller attended the Oasis of Love Church, Huntingdon. He was a member of
the American Legion in Lancaster. He and his late wife owned and showed
championship Siamese cats and were member of the American Cat Fanciers
Association and the International Cat Association. Mr. Miller graduated
from Hamburg High School in Lancaster. He served with the United States
Army during World War II. He was employed by the Sensenich Corporation,
where he retired after a long number of years, as one of two employees
who crafted and carved wooden propeller blades for the aircraft
production industry. Mr. Miller has resided at Westminster Woods for the
past year, having moved to Huntingdon from Conestoga, Lancaster County,
in order to be near his family, after his wife's death and his health
began to fail. Funeral services will be held April 2, at the
Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with Pastor Myrna Speck
officiating. Interment will be made in Haines Church Cemetery,
Wernersville. 

William "Pook" ROSS, 72, of Broad Top City, died April 2, 2004, at
Locust St., Broad Top City. Born Dec. 26, 1931, in Robertsdale, he was
the son of the late Carl Sr. and Florence (Woods) Ross. He married
Carole Ruth Wagner in Winchester, Va. She preceded him in death June 4,
1982. He is survived by a daughter, Kathy Ross of Claysburg, and a son,
Harold Ross of Mount Union. Five grandchildren also survive. Also
surviving are two sisters, Cora Trohanowsky of Broad Top City and Betty
Myers of Wood, and a brother, Carl Ross Jr. of Broad Top City. He was
preceded in death by a son. Samuel Ross, a brother, Mike Ross, and a
sister Mary Myers. Mr. Ross was affiliated with the Robertsdale Church
of God, Robertsdale. He had been employed as a maintenance worker at the
Robertsdale schoolhouse and had also worked at Claudia Footwear in Wood.
During his life, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. A memorial service will
be held April 5, at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top City,
with Pastor Donald Simmons officiating. Interment will be made in Broad
Top City I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Broad Top City. 

Betty M. PAINTER, 68 of Cassville, died unexpectedly April 2, 2004, at
J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Born March 8, 1936, in
Springfield Twp., Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late
Newton Duffey and Susie (Hamilton) Duffey Valentine. She was united in
marriage to Harold "Andy" W. Painter, Oct. 21, 1953, in Saltillo. She is
survived by her husband; three daughters and one son: Glenda Shoop, wife
of the late Sam Shoop, of Mapleton; Patty Van Eekelen, and her husband,
Vincent, of Virginia Beach, Va.; Harold Painter Jr., and his wife,
Melissa, of McConnellstown; and Melinda Bowley, and her husband,
Jeffrey, of Alexandria; and six grandchildren; Christine Shoop, Brandee
Van Eekelen, Christopher Van Eekelen, Dylan Kole Painter, Chad Bowley
and Casey Marie Bowley. Three sisters survive: Viola Clugston of
Gettysburg, Mary Sheeler of Port Royal and Lillian Horne of Mifflintown.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Opal Naugle Vaughn; a brother,
Raymond Duffey; and a half-sister Lecada Shields. Mrs. Painter was of
the Protestant faith. She was primarily a homemaker and enjoyed
gardening and crafting, and especially loved to spend time with her
family. Funeral services will be held April 6, at the Robert D. Heath
Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Gordon Ross officiating.
Interment will be made in Jordan Cemetery. 

Jane Elizabeth (Hoffman) DIXON, 103, of Petersburg, died April 2, 2004,
at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon, where she had briefly resided. Born
July 26, 1900 at the family farm in Petersburg, she was the daughter of
the late Henry H. and Annie (Graffius) Hoffman. She married Ernest H.
Dixon Jan. 20, 1921. He preceded her in death in 1984. She is survived
by a son, Henry H. Dixon and his wife, Ellen, of Brevard, N.C.; a
daughter, Ann D. Shewell of Drums; two grandsons, Marlin Dixon and his
wife, Ann, and Darrell Dixon; two great-granddaughters, Carolyn Coon and
her husband Michael, and Theresa Stockdale and her husband Robert; and
three great-great-grandchildren: Tallon Coon, Jacob Stockdale and
Catherine Stockdale. She is also survived by a cousin, Edward G. Myers
of Petersburg, who was her caregiver, and his wife, Mary; a nieces Mary
Jane Lightner of Alexandria and her husband, William; Elsie (Hoffman)
Rupert of Saxton; and a nephew, Robert Hoffman of Philadelphia. Mrs.
Dixon was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been
preceded in death by four brothers: Walter, Jack, Charles and Dick
Hoffman. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Ann
Shewell in 1981, and a great-granddaughter, Catherine Dixon in 1991.
Mrs. Dixon was a lifetime member of the Zion Lutheran Church,
Petersburg. She was a charter member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of Cloyd
Davis American Legion Post 150, Petersburg, and served as treasurer for
a long number of years. Along with her husband, she was a charter member
of the Petersburg Fire Co. and served as a treasurer there for many
years. She was also a member of the Shavers creek Grange and the Pomona
Grange. She was primarily a homemaker. However, years ago she was
employed as a clerk at Shaffer's Store in Petersburg and she also was a
babysitter in her later years. A lifetime resident of the Petersburg
area, she enjoyed volunteer work at the Lutheran Home in Hollidaysburg
and had made hats and booties for newborns at J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital for over 50 years. A funeral service will be held April 5, at
the Zion Lutheran Church, Petersburg, with Pastor Elizabeth Hess
officiating. Interment will be made at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg.

Harold R. "Cactus" CRAMER, 81, of Mapleton, died April 2, 2004, at
Altoona Hospital, Altoona. He had been in declining health for two
years. Born May 8, 1922, in Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Elmer
and Pearl (Roland) Cramer. He was united in marriage to Maxine Corbin
June 29, 1947, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Mapleton. He is
survived by his wife at home; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Bonnie P.)
Morningstar of Willamsburg and Mrs. Dennis (Donna A.) Scott of Ephrata;
five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Two sisters and one
brother survive: Loey Carson Mentzer and Donald Cramer, both of Mill
Creek, and Janet Kauffman of Texas. He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Millard "Shorty" Cramer and Frank Cramer. Mr. Cramer was a
member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Mapleton for 50 years,
serving as church secretary for over 40 years. He was a member of the
Loyal Sons Sunday School class. He was formerly a member of the Mapleton
American Legion Post. Mr. Cramer was a veteran of World War II, having
served with the United States Army, 101st Airborne Glider Division, at
the Battle of the Buldge and Bastogne in Southeast Belgium. He retired
in 1984 after 34 years at Owens-Corning Fiberglas in Huntingdon. Mr.
Cramer enjoyed playing the guitar, camping and fishing. Funeral services
will be held April 6, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Mapleton, with
Pastor Barbara Troxell and Pastor Raymond Crownover officiating.
Interment will be made in the Mapleton IOOF Cemetery. 

Isabel B. "Ish" PATTERSON, 88, of Williamsburg, passed away Friday
morning, April 2, 2004, at Altoona Hoapital, Altoona, following a brief
illness. Born March 31, 1916, in McAlevys Fort, she was the daughter of
the late Eliphas and Sarah (Eckley) Bigelow. She was united in marriage
to Robert D. Patterson Sr. Oct. 19, 1946, in White Haven. Mr. Patterson
preceded her in death March 15, 1999. She is survived by two daughters,
Anne P. Ferguson, and her husband, Tom, of Westerville, Ohio, and Sandra
P. Kauffman, and her husband, Jamie, of Williamsburg; one son, Robert E.
Patterson Jr. of Phoenix; four grandchildren: Jill Burket, Ryan Burket,
Seth Kauffman and Brett Kauffman; and three step-grandchildren: Kari
Rucker, and her husband, Justin, Rob Ferguson and Adam Ferguson. She was
the last surviving member of her immediate family of six children,
having been preceded in death by two brothers, Eliphas "June" Bigelow
and Jim Bigelow, and three sisters, Elda Powell, Charlotte Gibboney and
Elizabeth Simons. Mrs. Patterson was a past member of the former First
Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, where she was a lifetime elder and
clerk of the sessions. She was a member and past president of the
Williamsburg Civic Club and the Williamsburg BPW; a founding member and
current director of the Williamsburg Public Library; and a former
director of the Blair County Public Libraries. She was a graduate of
Stone Valley High School and Lock Haven State Teacher's College. She
retired as an elementary school teacher from the Williamsburg Community
School District in 1981 with 19 years of service. She previously taught
at the William Smith School in Huntingdon and also at various one-room
schoolhouses in Huntingdon County, with a combined 30 years of service.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge. Funeral services will
be held April 6, at the Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Williamsburg, with
Pastor Barry T. Vance officiating. Interment will be made in
Presbyterian Cemetery, Williamsburg. 

Bernice M. MCMATH, 92, formerly of Shade Valley, and more recently of
Latrobe, died April 2, 2004, at Latrobe Area Hospital, Latrobe. Her
death was unexpected. Born Jan. 22, 1912, in Derry, Westmoreland County,
she was the daughter of the late Francis and Clara (Hagie) Werner. She
was united in marriage to Bernard S. McMath April 18, 1938, at St.
Joseph's Catholic Church, Derry. Mr. McMath preceded her in death May
26, 1986. She is survived by four sisters and one brother: Clara McMath
of Shade Valley, Jane Oeschger of Derry, Elizabeth Smeltzer of Pitcairn,
Mary Jane Werner of Pittsburgh and Robert Werner of Derry. Three
brothers, Joseph, William and James, and two sisters, Rita Werner and
Camillus McMath, preceded her in death.Mrs. McMath was an active member
of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Shade Gap, where she taught Sunday School
and was a member of the Ladies Guild. She was also a member of the
Huntingdon County Farm Women, the Tuscarora Grange and the Shade Gap
Golden Agers. She moved to Latrobe, where she lived with her niece, Mary
Caroline Weimer, and her husband, Roland, and enjoyed life to the
fullest, attending church services faithfully, going shopping and out to
eat with her family. Later, she resided at her own apartment at Barnes
House Assisted Living Concepts, where she lived until the Lord called
her home. A funeral Mass will be held April 6, at St. Mary's Catholic
Church, Shade Gap, with the Rev. George Koharchik officiating. Interment
will be made in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Shade Gap.

Earl Franklin DRAKE, 80, of Orbisonia, died April 3, 2004, at his home
in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon County. Born Feb. 10, 1934, in Cromwell
Twp., he was the son of the late Franklin and Gertrude (Booher) Drake.
He was united in marriage to Tillie Price Nearhood. He is survived by
his wife at home; on daughter, Dottie Zinn of York; three stepdaughters:
Betty Culley of Pittston, Donna McCoy of Three Springs, and Patsy Leab
of Three Spring; one stepson, Richard Nearhood of Duncannon; eight
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. One brother, Fern Drake of
Lancaster, survives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie
Colyer; five sisters one brother. Mr. Drake was a member of Dublin Mills
Community Church, Hustontown. He was a member of Madden-Wennick Post No.
518 American Legion, Orbisonia. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Drake
served with the United States Army, 29th Infantry, in Normandy, France
and Rhineland. He retired from the former Owens-Corning Fiberglas plant
in Huntingdon. In earlier years, he had worked at Harbison-Walker
Refractories in Mount Union. He was an accomplished accordion player.
Funeral services will be held April 7, at Dublin Mills Community Church,
Hustontown, with Pastor Richard Stoey officiating. Interment will be
made in the adjoining church cemetery. Graveside military honors will be
accorded by the American Legion Honor Guard. 

Emma May (Earley) RIGBY, 92, a resident of The Oaks of Westminster
Woods, Huntingdon, and formerly of Barree Twp., Petersburg, died April
3, 2004, at The Oaks. Born July 5, 1911, in Washington, D.C., she was
the daughter of the late Latta and Edith (Harpur) Earley. She was united
in marriage to Joseph Smithton Rigby Sept. 4, 1946, at Centre Steet
Methodist Church in Cumberland, Md. Mr. Rigby preceded her in death July
12, 1965. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family,
having been preceded in death by two brothers, Frank H. Earley and
William Earley. Mrs. Rigby was a Quaker and a member of the Friends
House of State College. In her later years, she attended the Petersburg
United Methodist Church. She was a founder in 1979 of the Huntingdon
County Literacy Council and was a longtime member of the Juniata Valley
School Board before the merger of all the schools in the district took
place. She attained her bachelor of science degree at West Chester
University in 1931 and later earned a master's degree in education from
the Pennsylvania State University in 1966. Mrs. Rigby began her teaching
career as an elementary school teacher in the Bensalem School District
in 1931 and continued until 1945. After her marriage in 1946, she
substituted in one-room schoolhouses in Huntingdon County, and in 1957,
was hired for the position at the Manor Hill School until its closing in
1960. She also taught at the Alexandria and Juniata Valley elementary
schools, teaching grades 1, 3 and 6 until her retirement in 1976. She
was a resident of the family farm in Barree Twp. since her marriage in
1946. At the time she and her husband bought the family farm, they
constructed another farmhouse and barn and raised Golden Guernsey
cattle. She continued to live on the farm following her husband's death.
Years later, she purchased a home in Petersburg and spent time at both
places until selling the farm and buying an apartment at Westminster
Woods. She then spent time between Westminster Woods and her Petersburg
home, where she incidentally had a library for use with the literacy
program. In the mid-1990s, she sold her home in Petersburg and resided
strictly at her apartment at Westminster Woods. On Nov. 22, 1998, she
moved to The Oaks at Westminster Woods where she resided until her
death. Mrs. Rigby was a local Historian, Humanitarian and a gracious
Christian lady. She enjoyed flowers and gardening and was an avid reader
who helped countless individuals learn to read. A memorial meeting will
be conducted by the State College Society of Friends April 6, at the
Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Alexandria. Interment will be made in
Beechwood Cemetery, Hulmeville.

Myrtle M. COHENOUR, 94, a lifetime resident of Huntingdon, died April 3,
2004, at Huntingdon Manor, where she had resided for the past three
years. Born July 25, 1909, in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon County, she was
the daughter of the late Robert Wilson and Ella (Booher) Jacka. She was
united in marriage to John A. Cohenour, who preceded her in death Oct.
24, 1986. She is survived by two daughters, Arlene M. Goss of Huntingdon
and Marian R. Allison of Huntingdon; five grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren. A sister, Betty Stevens, survives. She was preceded
in death by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be
held April 6, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home in Huntingdon, with
the Rev. William Hughes officiating. Interment will be made in Jordan
Cemetery, Rockhill Furnace.

Thelma R. DRAKE, 84, of Mount Union, died April 4, 2004, at Woodland
Retirement Center in Orbisonia. She had been in failing health for over
two years. Born June 22, 1919, in Shirley Twp., Mount Union, she was the
daughter of the late Ernest and berths (Whitsel) Booher. She was united
in marriage to Duane C. Drake in July 1968. She is survived by her
husband at home; one daughter, Susan L. Bashore of Lancaster; and one
granddaughter, Jennifer Baab, and her husband, Jason, of Charlotte, N.C.
Four sisters survive: Verna M. Eberman of Mount Union, Hazel A. Faust of
Denver, Colo., Mrs. Paul (Helen L.) Miller of Cornwall and M. Jane
Stewart of Lancaster. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and
sisters: Lillian Bard, Linnie Booher, John Booher, Mildred Booher, Elmer
Booher and Grace Hardy, and by Samuel Booher, who died in infancy. Mrs.
Drake was a member of Allenport United Methodist Church, where she was a
member of the choir and served as Sunday School treasurer for many
years. She was a 1937 graduate of Mount Union High School. She retired
May 31, 1979, as office supervisor at Mifflin County Savings and Loan in
Mount Union, which was first known as the Mount Union Savings and Loan
Co., and later, MCS Bank. For many years, she was also part owner of
Thelma and Rachel's Style Shop in Mount Union with her aunt, Rachel
Brown. Mrs. Drake loved to cross stitch and enjoyed spending winters in
Florida with her husband. Funeral services will be held at April 7, at
the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home in Mount Union with Pastor Jennifer

Ralph S. YOUNG, 83, of Robertsdale, died April 5, 2004, at his home.
Born Aug. 1, 1920, in Nittany, he was the son of the late Ellis Elias
and Eva Belle (McDowell) Young. He was united in marriage to Florence
Elizabeth Yeager Feb. 8, 1946. He is survived by his wife of 58 years;
five daughters and three sons: Florence "Honey" Willman of Florida,
Ralph S. Young Jr. of Johnstown, Janice Jeffries of Maryland, Karen
Sheeders of Calvin, Donald Young of Robertsdale, Thomas Young of Camp
Hill, Edith Young of Maryland and Lori Masonis of Florida; 14
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren, including grandson Terry
Young of Robertsdale, who was reared in Mr. Young's home. Two sisters
and one brother survive: Lavohn Seigh of Three Springs, Bertha
Clippinger of Robertsdale and Gerald Young of New Jersey. He was
preceded in death by two sons, James Young and David Young and 11
brothers and sisters. Mr. Young was a member of the Robertsdale Church
of God, Robertsdale. He was a member of the Watson & Black American
Legion Post No. 126, Broad Top City. A United States Army Air Force
veteran of World War II. Mr. Young served as a private first class in
Saripan and Iwo Jima and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal,
Meritorius Unit Award, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater
Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He worked as a coal miner
and in construction. Funeral services will be held April 8, at the
Robertsdale Church of God, with Pastor Donald Simmons officiating.
Interment will be made in the Broad Top City IOOF Cemetery, where full
military honors will be accorded. 

William MITCHELL, 74, of Three Springs, was called home by the Lord,
April 5, 2004, at the VA Medical Center in Aspinwall. Born Oct. 5, 1929,
at Robertsdale, he was the son of the late Walter L. and Edith P.
(Stanley) Mitchell and stepson of the late Marie Mitchell. He was united
in marriage to Shirley E. Shaw Nov. 23, 1958, at Three Springs by the
Rev. Charles Rhodes. He is survived by his wife at home; three sons and
two daughters: Howard Mitchell of Jacksonville, N.C.; Nancy Mayuri of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; John Mitchell of Kadena AFB, Okinawa, Japan;
Floyd Mitchell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Tammy Mitchell of
Hollidaysburg. Six grandchildren survive: Beverly Mitchell, Kimberly
Lumsden, Marshall Mitchell, Kevin Mayuri, Alyson Mitchell and Meagan
Mitchell. Four half-sisters and five half-brothers survive: Norma Jean
Snyder of Three Springs; Joanne Bickle of Mapleton; Anna Mae Waters of
Hustontown; Peggy Towsey of Port Royal; Richard Mitchell and George
Mitchell, both of Three Springs; Irvan Mitchell of New Castle, Del.;
Thomas Mitchell of Mapleton; and Paul Mitchell of Port Royal. He was
preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Eugene Mitchell and two
sisters, Alverta Sparks and Lydia Wanner. Mr. Mitchell was a member of
the Three Springs Assembly of God Church. He was a member of the
Madden-Wennick Post No. 518 American Legion in Rockhill Furnace and the
Disabled American Veterans of Altoona. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the
United States Air Force, serving from Dec. 17, 1947 until March 6, 1953.
He was the owner and operator of Mitchell's Electronics in Three
Springs. Mr. Mitchell was the author of the religious column, "Brother
Bill's Corner.; which appeared in the Broad Top Bulletin, the County
Observer in Lewistown and, on occasion, The Valley Log. One of his
greatest Joys in life was sharing his faith with others. Funeral
services will be held April 9, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home in
Orbisonia, with the Revs. Robert Raycroft and James Lynn officiating.
Interment will be made in Three Springs Cemetery. 

John ANDERSON, 86, of 1011 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died April 5, 2004,
at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. Born Dec. 25, 1917 he
was the son of the late Peter and Katie (Prokopief) Anderson. He was
united in marriage to Mildred Rhodes June 29, 1946, in Baltimore, Md. He
is survived by his wife at home; two brothers, Nicholas Anderson of
Harrisburg and Mitch Anderson of Mount Union; and one sister, Mary
Anderson of Mount Union, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters: Alice Anderson,
Michael Anderson, Harry Anderson, Paul Anderson and Annie Anderson. Mr.
Anderson was of the Catholic faith. He attended Mount Union High School
and served in the United States Army during World War II with Antitank
Company, 13th Infantry. He was employed for many years by Lewistown
Borough, working as a cement finisher. Mr. Anderson enjoyed gardening.
Private funeral services will be held April 8, at the Robert D. Heath
Funeral Home in Mount Union, with the Rev. Leo Arnone officiating.
Interment will be made in haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg. 

Harold Paul LEGEER, 74, of 518 W. Tannery Road, wells Tannery, died
April 6, 2004, at the home of his daughter, Tena Miller, James Creek,
following an extended illness. Born Sept. 21, 1929, in west Salisbury,
he was the son of the late George and Christina (Spiker) Legeer. He was
reared by his stepfather, the late William Krouse. He was united in
marriage April 29, 1975, to Arlene Hughes Corrie, who preceded him in
death Oct. 17, 1986. He then married Velma Smith June 9, 1991. She
survives in Bedford. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four
daughters and one son: Mrs. Robert (Angelene) Zelanko of Defiance, Mr.
John (Diane) Leader of Cassville, Sharon Childers of Everett, Paul
Corrie, and his wife, Barbara (Cook), of Riddlesburg and Mrs. John
(Tena) Miller Jr. of James Creek. He is also survived by 29
grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren. A brother, Lue Legeer of Cumberland, Md.,
survives. He was preceded in death by a son and daughter, Joseph Corrie
and Linda Wright; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four
brothers; and one sister. Mr. Legeer was of the Lutheran faith. He was a
member of the Hopewell VFW and the Six Mile Run American Legion. For
many years, he worked as a coal miner in the Broad Top area. He also
worked as a carpenter for many years. He enjoyed auto repair and various
crafts. Funeral services will be held April 9, at the D. Ronald Long
Funeral Home in Saxton, with Pastor Stanley Cordell officiating.
Interment will be made in Wells Valley Methodist Cemetery, Wells
Tannery. 

Margaret P. (Quinn) KRUGH, 88, a resident of Altoona Center for Nursing
Care and formerly of Altoona, died April 6, 2004, at the Center for
Nursing Care. Born Sept. 8, 1915, in Neffs Mills, she was the daughter
of Seymoure and Edith (Watson) Quinn. She was united in marriage to Paul
R. Krugh Sr. April 15, 1944, in Altoona. Mr. Krugh died April 18, 1994,
after 50 years of marriage. Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Judith
Krugh of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; two grandsons, David Krugh, and his wife,
Christine, and Jeffrey Krugh, and his wife, Pamela, all of Reynoldsburg,
Ohio; and six great-grandchildren, Rachel, Anthony, Timothy, Molly, Eric
and Brian. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, John Castrichini of
Altoona, two nieces, Ethel McNellis of Altoona and Ellen Dixon of
Bavard, N.C., and several cousins. She was preceded in death by a son,
Paul Raymond Krugh II, who died September 1999; two brothers, John
Quinn, who was killed in Italy during World War II, and Ralph Quinn; and
three sisters, Esther Berman, Alice Rudy and Myrtle Castrichini. Mrs.
Krugh was a member of Mooresville United Methodist Church; Westminster
Presbyterian Church, Frankstown Road, Hollidaysburg; and the
Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, Fla. She was a graduate of the
Petersburg Vocational High School. she was employed as a finisher in the
Stem Department at Sylvania Electronics. Mrs. Krugh was a homemaker and
enjoyed cooking and traveling. Funeral services will be held April 10,
at the E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., Altoona, with the Rev.
William S. Olewiler officiating. Interment will be made in Mooresviile
Cemetery. 

Floyd A. "Bunny" Painter, 87, who resided with his niece, Vonnie
Hockenberry Cooper, at Three Springs, went to be with the Lord April 8,
2004, at the Altoona Center for Nursing Care, Altoona. Born Nov. 9,
1916, in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late
John and Louisa (Hamman) Painter. He is survived by a sister, Pearl
Stinson of Three Springs, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers: Lelah Gentte, Earl
Painter, Paul Painter, Ada Rogers, Onetta Painter, Dorothy Wilson and
Samuel Painter, who died in infancy. Mr. Painter attended the Dublin
Mills Community Church, Hustontown, and formerly attended the McKendree
United Methodist Church, Three Springs. In his earlier years, he was a
Huntingdon County Forest Fire Warden for a number of years. Mr. Painter
was primarily a farmer and also assisted geological surveyors measuring
the depths of the Aughwick Creek. Funeral services will be held April
10, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia. Interment will be
made in Jordan Cemetery, Orbisonia. 

Eleanor Catherine (Mullen) BROWN, 85, a resident of The Homestead at
Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, and formerly of Mifflin Street,
Huntingdon, died April 8, 2004, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods,
following an extended illness. Born June 10, 1918, in Leetsdale,
Allegheny County, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary
(McCarthy) Mullen. She was united in marriage to Coyle Elwood Brown
April 20, 1944, at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Baden,
by the Rev. Raymond Foster. Mr. Brown preceded her in death Jan. 18,
1994. She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Jeffrey (Barbara) DeWalt
of Lititz, Mrs. Frank (Peggy) O'Leary of Pittsburgh and Mrs. David
(Susan) Martin of Huntingdon; seven grandchildren: Beth, Leah and Kara
DeWalt, Jennifer Hoover and Kellie, Erin and Lauren Martin; and one
great-grandson, A.J. DeWalt. She was preceded in death by a daughter,
Kathleen Hoover, in 1975. She was the last surviving member of her
immediate family, having been preceded in death by one brother, James
Mullen, and one sister, Rose Ann Weir. Mrs. Brown was a member of Most
Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Huntingdon, where she was a member of
the Altar Society. She attended Rochester, Pa., public schools and
graduated from Rochester High School. She attended Duff's Business
College in Pittsburgh and later graduated from Practical Nursing School
in Ambridge. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at Rochester
General Hospital, retiring in 1974 after nine years. Mrs. Brown was an
avid reader and enjoyed traveling. A funeral Mass will be held April 12,
at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David J.
Arseneault officiating. Interment will be made in Holy Cross Cemetery,
Huntingdon.

Maryann R. PIENTKA, 70, of Mount Union, died unexpectedly April 9, 2004,
at her home. Born Dec. 11, 1933, in Plains, she was the daughter of
Andrew and Julia Hirko. She was united in marriage to Michael Pientka
Sr. in May 1955 in Plains. Mr. Pientka preceded her in death in 1989.
She is survived by three sons and one daughter: Michael J. Pientka Jr.
of Colorado, Matthew J. Pientka of Arizona; Marshall J. Pientka of Texas
and Michele J. Lemin of Mount Union; and six grandchildren. Five sisters
and two brothers survive: Alberta Evancho and Betty Lou Dupak, both of
Plains; Andrew Hirko of Lancaster; Florence Hornick of Wilkes-Barre;
Michael Hirko of Plains; Dorothy Picchetti of Wilkes-Barre; and Barbara
Hirko of Plains. Mrs. Pientka was of the Catholic faith. She was a
graduate of Plains High School. She retired in 1998 from Owens-Corning
Fiberglas in Huntingdon with 19 years of service. Previously, she had
been employed by Arrow in Huntingdon and Robin Footwear in Mount Union.
She enjoyed sewing. Funeral services will be held April 14, at the
Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Jim Stock
officiating. 

Edward L. REED, 49, of Yorkshire Drive, Mechanicsburg, died April 9,
2004, at Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, following an extended
illness. Born Nov. 9, 1954, in Roaring Spring, he was the son of the
late Howard Mitchell Reed and Edith Louise (Foor) Reed. He was united in
marriage to Debra Andrusko July 27, 1974, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He
is survived by his wife; one son, David Reed, and his wife, Jennifer, of
Mechanicsburg; two daughters, Ericalyn Wise, and her husband, Oliver, of
Mississippi, and Erin Reed of Mechanicsburg; and two grandchildren,
Bailee Reed and Lillian Reed, both of Mechanicsburg. Four brothers
survive: Robert R. Reed of Saxton, Ronnie R. Reed of Robertsdale, James
H. Reed of Saxton and Gary L. Reed of Huntingdon. Mr. Reed was a member
of Christian Life Assembly Church of God of Camp Hill. He also attended
the Riddlesburg Bible Church, Riddlesburg. He was a graduate of Tussey
Mountain High School and attended Northwest Bible College in Minot, N.D.
He was employed as a saleman for Montgomery Ward. Mr. Reed was an avid
sports fan, especially of the Atlanta Falcons. He served as a referee
for the pee wee football program in the Harrisburg area. He also loved
spending time with his grandchildren. Funeral services will be held
April 13, at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top City. Pastor
Marrion Foor will officiate, assisted by Pastor Jesse Musser. Interment
will be made in Langdondale Cemetery, Six Mile Run. 

Eugene S. MOORE, 76, of Orbisonia, died April 10, 2004, at Woodland
Retirement Center in Orbisonia. He had been in failing health. Born Dec.
10, 1927, in Shirley Twp., Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late
Samuel and Helen L. (Bookhamer) Moore. He was the last surviving member
of his immediate family. Mr. Moore was a carpenter and enjoyed fishing.
At His request in his pre-arrangements, there will be no public funeral
service.

Ruth E. SHOPE, 85, formerly of Smithfield Twp., Huntingdon, died April
10, 2004, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon. Born May 24,
1918, in Three Springs, she was the daughter of the late John E. and
Olive C. (Fleck) Wible. She was united in marriage to Ellsworth D.
"Shorty" Shope June 30, 1936, in Barton, Md. Mr. Shope preceded her in
death April 5, 1990. She is survived by one daughter, Doris (Shope) Cox
of Shrewsbury; two sons, David J. Shope of Marietta, Ga., and Dean W.
Shope of Huntingdon; 10 grandsons; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by one grandson, Jason O. Shope, and was the last
surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Shope was a member of
Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Three Springs. She was employed
by the Huntingdon Area School District in the Smithfield Elementary
School cafeteria, retiring as head cook in 1984 with 27 years of
service. She also volunteered at Huntingdon Manor for a number of years.
Funeral services will be held April 15, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral
Home in Huntingdon, with Pastor Ken Grundon officiating. Interment will
be made in Three Springs Memorial Cemetery, Three Springs. 

Deborah K. (Tennis) STOLLE, 52, of Orbisonia, died April 10, 2004, at
her home. She had been in failing health. Born May 13, 1951, in
Huntingdon, she was the daughter of Geraldine (Fisher) Dull, who
survives in Mount Union. Along with her mother, she is survived by four
children: Christopher Kelly of Lititz, Shawn Cowan of McConnellsburg,
Tasha Wennick of McVeytown and Heaven Stolle, with whom she resided; and
five grandchildren. Four brothers survive: Harry Tennis of Kansas and
James Tennis, Bruce Dull and Charles Dull, all of Mount Union. Ms.
Stolle was of the Protestant faith. She was last employed by Seton C.,
Saxton, and previously worked for 20 years at Empire Kosher. "Debbie"
loved spending time with her grandchildren. Funeral services will be
held April 14, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with
Pastor Darrell Nicklow officiating. 

Jack Clifton ANDERS, 76, of Morris Twp., Alexandria, died April 10,
2004, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born July
18, 1927, the son of the late Roy H. and Myrtle Inez (Rousch) Anders,and
lived his entire life on his family homestead in Water Street, Morris
Twp. He was united in marriage to Rosemary Waite April 4, 1947, in
Berrysville, Va. Mrs. Anders preceded him in death Feb. 28, 2002. He is
survived by three sons: Robert C. "Sam" Anders, and his wife, Linda,
Thomas W. Anders, and his wife, Patricia, and Kevin M. Anders, and his
wife, Michelle, all of Water Street; one daughter, Melissa "Susie"
Franchio, and her fiance, Jerry, of Mount Holly, N.J.; six
grandchildren: Robert C. Anders Jr., Jack T. Anders, Daniel W. Anders,
Clifford R. Anders, Amy Fleck and Adam Franchio; and two
great-grandchildren Lynnsey Fleck and Caleb Anders. Two brothers, Thomas
Richard Anders and Joseph W. Anders, both of Alexandria, and a sister,
Jean A. Kooken of Tyrone, survive. In addition to his wife, he was
preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Low Anders Oct. 2, 1881; an
infant son, Jack Anders, in 1964; and a granddaughter, Jennifer E.
Anders, in 1975. He was also preceded in death by six brothers: George
E. Anders, Roy H. Anders, John V. Anders, Raymond Anders, James Anders
and Donald Anders; and a sister, Patricia Logan. Mr. Anders was a member
of God's Missionary Church in Alexandria. He was a lifetime member of
the Hookies Fire Co. in Tyrone and a life member of the Water Street and
Shaffersville Historical Society. He graduated from Alexandria High
School. Like many of the "greatest generation," he volunteered to serve
during World War II, entering the United States Army Special Training
Unit, Fort Devens, Mass., Sept. 11, 1945. He served as a private until
he was honorable discharged Dec. 14, 1945, after the war ended. He
retired in 1993 after working for 26 years for the IA Construction
Corporation. Mr. Anders enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening and his
biggest enjoyment came from his time spent with his family, they were
the most important part of his life. Funeral services will be held April
13, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Alexandria, with the Rev. Alvin
R. Shaffer officiating. Interment will be made in Alexandria
Presbyterian Cemetery, Alexandria.

James Wilson ROBINSON, 60, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of
Huntingdon, died April 11, 2004, at the family cottage on Hartwell Lake
in Martin, Ga. Born April 10, 1944, in Huntingdon, he was the son of
Rosalia Mae (Lindsay) Robinson, who survives at her Huntingdon and
Reading residences, and the late John Albert Robinson. He was united in
marriage to Mary Ann Mentzer Aug. 20, 1981, in Huntingdon, by the Rev.
Nancy (Robinson) Dougherty, sister of the groom. He is survived by his
wife at the couple's Florida residence and two sons, Eric James Robinson
and Mark Eugene Robinson, who are both attending college while residing
at the family home. His sister, the Rev. Nancy (Robinson) Dougherty, and
her husband, Phillip L. Dougherty, PhD., survive, as well as three
nieces and one nephew: Bethany Paige Lutz of Reading, Mignon Vath of
Chicago, Ill., Heather Dougherty of Rochester, N.Y., and Sherman
Dougherty of Thousand Oaks, Calif. Mr. Robinson was a member of the
First United Methodist Church in Hudson, Fla. He was a member and past
president of the Florida Mosquito Control Association and was a member
of the American Mosquito Control Association. He attended Huntingdon
Public schools, graduating from Huntingdon Area High School with the
Class of 1962. He attended the Pennsylvania State University and
received a bachelor of science degree from Juniata College in 1969. In
1971, he earned his master's degree from Rutgers University. Mr.
Robinson was employed by Pasco County Mosquito Control in Pasco County,
Fla., from 1971 until his retirement in March 2004. He served as Pasco
County's director from 1973 until his retirement. Mr. Robinson was
honored by Pasco County by the naming of the mosquito control facility
after him. The James W. Robinson Pasco County Mosquito Control Facility
was dedicated November 2001. Additionally, Mr. Robinson received the
following honors: Florida Mosquito Control's high honor of the Maurice
W. Provost Memorial Award for recognition of his outstanding
contribution in the field of mosquito control in November 2003; the Fred
Stutz Memorial Award (the Florida Mosquito Control Association's highest
award for operational achievements) in 1996; the American Mosquito
Control Association Meritorious Service Award in February 2004; the
Presidential Citation from the American Mosquito Control Association in
1994. Funeral services will be held at Jacob's Church, Penn Twp.,
Hesston, April 17. The Rev. Nancy (Robinson) Dougherty) will officiate,
assisted by the Rev. Christy L. Dowdy. Interment will be made in the
White Church Cemetery, Penn Twp., Hesston. 

Elsie M. HOUPPERT, 78, formerly of King of Prussia, died April 11, 2004,
at Woodland Retirement Center in Orbisonia, where she had been residing.
Born May 14, 1925, in Raton, N.M., she was the daughter of the late
Basilio and Clara (Garcia) Moses. She was united in marriage to James L.
Houppert in 1945. Mr. Houppert preceded her in death Jan. 13, 1980. She
is survived by one son, James L. Houppert Jr. of Shade Gap; one
daughter, Dolores M. Burgess of King of Prussia; and two granddaughters
and one grandson, Kelly Burgess of King of Prussia, Rebecca Houppert of
Wayne and Alex Burgess of King of Prussia. Two sisters survive: Frances
Broyles of Phoenix, Ariz., and Emily Salamon of Pueblo, Colo. She was
preceded in death by one son, John P. Houppert; two brothers, Joseph
Moses and Frank Moses; and one sister, Clara Vigil. Mrs. Houppert was a
member of Our Lady of Divine Providence Parish, King of Prussia. She
retired from Bloomingdale's Department Store in 1996 after 15 years of
services. She was also a homemaker. A funeral Mass will be held at noon
Wednesday, April 14, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Ridgley
Street, Orbisonia, with the Rev. George Koharchik as celebrant.
Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. 

Oscar Lloyd GRIFFITH, 64, of General Delivery, Hopewell, died April 12,
2004, as the result of an automobile accident. Born Sept. 29, 1939, in
Jennerstown, he was the son of the late Charles and Arminta Doretta
(Tressler) Griffith. He was united in marriage to Sally Jean Grace Nov.
24, 1962, in Bedford County. Mr. and Mrs. Griffith died in the same
automobile accident. He is survive by two daughters, Robin Kuklo and
Cindy Fisher, and seven grandchildren: Terry Gartland, Christopher
Gartland, Jessica Gartland, Lukas Kuklo, Noah Kuklo, John Griffith and
Brian Ramsey. Also surviving are one brother, James Griffith; five
sisters: Betty Zelanko, Elizabeth Donaldson, Armeta Pittman, Shirley
Bouchard and Carol Weaver; one half-brother, Charles Ross; and one
half-sister, Anna Ross. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter,
Heather Ramsey, and two brothers, Charles Griffith and Joe Griffith. Mr.
Griffith worked as a laborer at Cooper's Saw Mill. He had also worked in
the coal mines and for the state. Funeral services will be held April
17, at the Hopewell Methodist Church, with Pastor Jesse Musser
officiating. Interment will be made in Grandview Cemetery, Saxton. 

Sally Jean (Grace) GRIFFITH, 68, of General Delivery, Hopewell, died
April 12, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident. Born March 19,
1936, in Broad Top Twp., Bedford County, she was the daughter of the
late Clifford Charles and Verna Angus (Browell) Grace. She was united in
marriage to Oscar Lloyd Griffith Nov. 24, 1962, in Bedford County. Mr.
and Mrs. Griffith died in same automobile accident. She is survived by
two daughters, Robin Kuklo and Cindy Fisher, and seven grandchildren:
Terry Gartland, Christopher Gartland, Jessica Gartland, Lukas Kuklo,
Noah Kuklo, John Griffith and Brian Ramsey. Two sisters and four
brothers survive: Janet Skipper, Ruth O'Neal, Wilday Grace, John Grace,
Bill Grace and Larry Grace. She was preceded in death by a
granddaughter, Heather Ramsey, and a brother, James C. Grace. Mrs.
Griffith was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held April 17, at the
Hopewell Methodist Church, with Pastor Jesse Musser officiating.
Interment will be made in Grandview Cemetery, Saxton. 

Robert A. STEELE, 79, formerly of Huntingdon and Dallas, died April 12,
2004, at Hospice Community Care in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, after a
lengthy illness. Born In Belleville, he was the son of the late J.
Sherman and E. Pearle Steele. His wife, Patricia (Rohland) Steele,
preceded him in death in 1984. He is survived by daughters, Sandra
Woodling of Martinsburg, Judith Swire of Hunlock Creek and Gina Scavone
and Kippie Morgan of Dallas. There are 11 grandchildren and one
great-grandson. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Gwendolyn
Shope and Gladys Wallace. Mr. Steele was a member of Mount Olivet United
Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg. He was a member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Posts in Huntingdon and Mechanicsburg. He was a graduate of
Huntingdon High School and he attended King's College, Wilkes-Barre. He
was a master sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1942 until
1970. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran, having been awarded
two Purple Hearts for being wounded during conflict. Before retirement
in 1991, Mr. Steele was employed as director of industries for all of
the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institutions, located in Camp Hill.
Prior to becoming director, he was supervisor of Correctional Industries
of SCI Dallas. He was past treasurer of the Correctional Industries
Association for the U.S. for many years. Private funeral services will
be held April 24, at the convenience of the family. Interment will be
made at Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, with Pastor Dick Felty,
Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg, officiating. 

Raymond C. "Dick" SMITH, 81, of Valley View Haven, formerly of Goss
Terrace, Lewistown, entered into eternal rest April 13, 2004. Born March
24, 1923, he was the son of Elmer and Goldie Smith. His wife of 57
years, Betty (Hancock) Smith, survives. Also surviving are three
children: Richard L. Smith, and his wife, Paula, and Shelley Raye Smith
and Steve Smith, and his wife, Marsha, all of Lewistown; eight
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. One brother and four
sisters survive: Leo Smith of Lewistown, Cora Eward of Reedsville, Mabel
Livinghouse of Lewistown, Ernestine Sager of Philipsburg and Betty
Hackenberry of Lewistown. He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy.
Mr. Smith was of the Protestant faith. He was a World War II U.S. Army
veteran, having served in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked at the
American Viscoe Corporation for 23 years. He worked in construction and
was a self-employed carpenter who enjoyed building houses. For several
years, he worked at Harbison-Walker Refractories and for PennDOT. He
retired from Granville Twp., Mifflin County, with 10 years of service.
Mr. Smith liked to raise beef and pork when he was rearing his family.
He enjoyed being around children and will be remembered as a loving and
devoted father and husband. A memorial service will be held April 25, at
the First Church of the Brethren, Shaw Avenue, Lewistown, with Pastor
Doug Sherlock officiating. 

Gilbert N. KUHSTOS, 68, of Cassville, died April 13, 2004, at Hillview
Nursing Home, Altoona, after an extended illness. Born Oct. 13, 1935, in
Cassville, he was the son of the late William and Lillian (Stapleton)
Kuhstos, and lived his entire life at the family homestead. He was
united in marriage to Elizabeth"Betty" Burns June 14, 1958, in Newton
Hamilton. He is survived by his wife at home; two daughters, Carole L.
Kaiser, and her fiance, Joe Tryon, of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Carrie L.
Hartsell, and her husband, Bruce, of Hickory, N.C.; one son, Edward
Kuhstos, and his wife, Kathi, of Tyrone; seven grandchildren; and one
great-granddaughter. Two sisters, Pearl Schnauffer and Margaret "Peg"
Shope, both of Huntingdon, survive. He was preceded in death by three
sisters: Maxine Nastas, Julia Hall and Carole Kuhstos, and two brothers,
Charles Kuhstos and William Kuhstos. Mr. Kuhstos was of the Protestant
faith. He graduated from Robertsdale High School. He was drafted into
the United States Army Oct. 17, 1955, and served as a tank commander
until Oct. 16, 1957. He retired in 1993 after working over 30 years in
the construction industry as a carpenter. Mr. Kuhstos enjoyed Hunting,
fishing and gardening. His biggest enjoyment came from his time spent
with his devoted wife of over 45 years and his family. They were the
most important part of his life. Funeral services will be held April 17,
at the Beavertown Bible Church, Todd, with the Rev. James Thomas and the
Rev. Ralph Hamer officiating. Interment will be made in Trough Creek
Valley Baptist Cemetery, Calvin. 

Gaetano O. "Guy" GUILIANTE, 55, of Mount Union, died April 13, 2004, at
Lewistown Hospital. He had been in failing health. Born Jan. 9, 1949, in
Chester, he was the son of the late Gaetano O. Jr. and Clara (Joline)
Guiliante. He was united in marriage to Doris Dennison Sept. 19, 1986,
in Mount Union. He is survived by his wife, and three sons and four
daughters: Gaetano O. "Guy" Guiliante, and his wife, Robyn, of Mount
Union; William V. "Bill" Guiliante, and his wife, Courtney, of Mount
Union; Sally Guiliante of Blairsville; Jennifer Guiliante of Bald Eagle;
Robin Shore, and her husband, Glenn Jr., of Mount Union; Danette
Yakymac, and her husband, Jonathan, of Mount Union; and Harrison Smith
III of Mount Union. He is also survived by the following grandchildren:
Anthony Guiliante, who is being reared in Mr. Guiliante's home; and
Michael Smith, Glenn Shore III, Crysta Guiliante, Amanda Shore; Lindsay
Shore; Heather Guiliante, Macy Guiliante, Breckin Guiliante, Ryan
Guiliante, Chapin Guiliante, Austin Yakymac, Ashlyn Smith, Alexis
Condrack, Thomas Reder and Alissa Reder. Two brothers and one sister
survive: William King of Upper Chichester, Enrico "Henry" Guiliante of
California and Dollie Missovoulos of Williamstown, N.J. He was preceded
in death by one brother, John King, and one granddaughter, Elizabeth
Smith. Mr. Guiliante was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints, Mill Creek. He had served as a Webelos leader with
Pack 276 Cub Scouts, Mount Union, for 10 years. Mr. Guiliante was
employed for a number of years at Huntingdon County Weatherization.
Funeral services will be held April 16, at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints, Mill Creek, with President Richard Hark officiating.
Interment will be made in the IOOF Cemetery, Rockhill Furnace. 

Mae Gertrude (Ross) PARKS, 93, of Huntingdon, died April 15, 2004, at
Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Mrs. Parks had been in declining health
for the past two and one-half years. Born Aug. 5, 1910, in Bigler,
Clearfield County, she was the daughter of the late John and Viola
(Hoover) Ross. She was united in marriage to Elmer E. "Ted" Parks Aug.
23, 1928, in Saint Petersburg, Clarion County. Mr. Parks preceded her in
death March 8, 1967. She is survived by one son, Elmer L. Parks of
Hartslog Valley; and one niece, Judy A. (Coffman) Himes, who was reared
in the Parks' home. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Linda
Progl, and her husband, Rick, of Porter Twp.; Patty Bonsell, and her
husband, Mark, of Porter Twp.; Ted. E. Parks of Lewistown; Tim B. Parks,
and his wife, Michele, of Norfolk, Va.; Steven R. Himes of Knoxville,
Tenn.; and DeWitt W. Himes of Huntingdon; and eight great-grandchildren:
Elizabeth, Tammy, Randi, Ryan, Caleb, Isabella, Nicole and Samantha. A
brother, Theodore W. Ross of Alexandria, and a sister, Mary A. Ross of
Huntingdon, survive. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law,
Genevieve (Jackson) Parks; and five sisters: Mrs. Charles (Thelma
Holtzapple; Mrs. Maurice (Bertha) Breon; Mrs. Albert (Sara) Reed; Mrs.
Albert (Annie) Henry; and Mrs. Glenn (Mildred) Spriggle. Mrs. Parks was
a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon. She attended
Centre County public schools. She was employed by the Huntingdon
Throwing Mills and Juniata College, retiring from the latter's
housekeeping department in 1970. Mrs. Parks was especially fond of cats
and enjoyed crocheting. Funeral services will be held April 19, at the
John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Revs. Dale W. and
Christy L. Dowdy officiating. Interment will be made in Riverview
Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Charles R. MASON, 83, of Mount Union, died April 16, 2004, at his home
following a brief illness. Born Sept. 12, 1920, in Mount Union, he was
the son of the late William M. and Anna (Parsons) Mason. She was united
in marriage to Margaret A. Fields March 22, 1951, at the First Methodist
Church in Williamsport by the Rev. Cecil Weimer. Mrs. Mason preceded him
in death Nov. 22, 2003. The couple had been married 52 years. He is
survived by one son, Captain William R. Mason, and his wife, Margaret,
of Fairfax, Va.; and two grandchildren, Maghan and Michael. He was
preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: Rose Crouse,
William A. Mason, Olive Huey, Harbison W. Mason, Helen Holder, Paul
Mason, Pauling Linn, Joseph Mason, Anna Zimmerman, Naomi Mason and
Margaret Mason. Mr. Mason was a member of the Presbyterian churches in
both Mount Union and Georgetown, Del, and was active in both, having
served as a deacon, choir member, Sunday School superintendent and adult
Bible class teacher. He also served as a Cub Scout leader for many
years. He was a life member of the VFW and American Legions Posts and a
member of the Elks and Moose Lodges in Huntingdon. His Masonic
affiliations included the Masonic Lodge F&AM, the Grand Lodge AF&AM,
Shrine Club, Delaware Consistory, NUR Temple and the Order of the
Eastern Star, all in Delaware. A graduate of Mount Union High School and
Penn State University, Mr. Mason furthered his education at Salisbury
State College, Colorado State University and the University of Delaware.
During World War II, he served in the United States Navy, attaining the
rank of chief petty officer. He served with the 2nd Beach Battalion in
North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy. At the end of the war, he was
in charge of the public works in Guam. A secondary school teacher, he
taught at Tyrone High School, Lewistown Vocational School, Sussex School
in Georgetown, Del., Milton High School in Milton, Del., and Mount Union
Area High School. A private memorial service will be held at the
convenience of Mr. Mason's family. 

Betty Lou HESS, 61, of Hopewell, died unexpectedly April 16, 2004, at
her home. Born Oct. 10, 1942, in Hopewell, she was the daughter of the
late Samuel E. and Thelma (Spacht) Ford. She was united in marriage to
David F. Hess April 27, 1960, in Winchester, Va. She is survived by her
husband at home and the following children: Genevieve Lynn, and her
husband, Robert, of Six Mile Run; Tony Hess, and his wife, Tammy
(Gochnour), of Hopewell; Linda Ruby of Hopewell; Gary Hess of Somerset;
Betty Jean Harding, and her husband, Rockey, of Hopewell; Dustin Hess at
home; and stepson Bruce Estep, and his wife, Karen (Granfors), of Mill
Creek. Seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also
survive. She is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Jim Ford
of Arkansas; Roy Ford of Hopewell; Lillian Sellers of Mississippi;
Phyllis Smotherman of New Mexico; Beverly Regi, and her husband, Wayne,
and Sara Zeckman, and her husband, John, all of Fort Littleton; Ramona
Rutters, Nancy Lynn and Wanza Horton, and her husband, George, all of
Hopewell; and Debbie Reynolds of Tyrone. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, Barbara Becker, and a sister, Joy Mixell. Mrs. Hess was
affiliated with the Shermans Valley Brethren in Christ Church. For
several years, she worked at the Cove Shoe Factory in Martinsburg and
was also employed as a waitress at Snyder's Gateway and Perkins, both in
Breezewood. Funeral services will be held April 19, at the Shermans
Valley Brethren in Christ Church with Pastor Dan Gochnour officiating.
Interment will be made in Shermans Valley Brethren in Christ Church
Cemetery. 

Margaret Fetzko HILSHANSKY, 91, of Huntingdon, formerly of Central City,
died April 17, 2004, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Born
July 27, 1912, in Delancey, the daughter of the late John and Maria
(Lizak) Kokinda. She was twice married, first to Paul Fetzko; then to
George Hilshansky. Both Mr. Fetzko and Mr. Hilshansky preceded her in
death. She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn (Fetzko) East, and her
husband, Kent, of Huntingdon, with whom Mrs. Hilshansky resided for the
past two years; a son, Raymond Paul Fetzko, and his wife, Charlene
(Kovach), of Salix; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A
brother, George Kokinda of Ohio, survives. She was preceded in death by
a grandson, Mark Paul East; two brothers, John and Michael Kokinda; and
two sisters, Anna Gunza and Mary Katz. A brief service will be held
April 21, at the Robert F. Mulcahy Funeral Home, Central City. A Diving
Liturgy will follow at St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church, with the Very
Rev. John Govrusik officiating. Committal will be made in Parish
Cemetery. 

Harry Derber "Derb" OSWALD, 46, of 61 Pechins Road, Collegeville, was
pronounced dead April 18, 2004, by the Berks County coroner at the scene
of a car-pedestrian accident. Mr. Oswald sustained fatal injuries when
he was struck by a vehicle where he was part of a cleanup crew along
Route 222 in Berks County. He was born Feb. 9, 1958, in West Chester,
the son of the late Harry L. Whitson Sr. and Patricia (Oswald) Whitson
Decker of Wood where she resides with his stepfather, Rick Decker. Mr.
Oswald is also survived by his companion, Diane Shoemacher of
Collegeville. A son, Jared Oswald of Saxton, and two daughters, Adrianne
Oswald of Saxton, and Tara Oswald of Aspenwall, survive. Also surviving
are two brothers, Jesse Whitson of Bridgeport and Harry L. Whitson Jr.
of Collegeville and a sister, Karen Owoc of Bridgeport. Four uncles and
two aunts survive: Mike Oswald and John Oswald of Collegeville, Theodore
Oswald of Coatesville, Jack Decker of Defiance, Steve Whitson of
Chester, Judy Oswald of Collegeville and Catherine Spitko of Bridgeport.
There are six nieces and one nephew surviving, who referred to their
uncle at "The Old Wise One." He was preceded in death by three uncles
and three aunts. Mr. Oswald was of the Protestant faith. He was a member
of the Sons of the American Legion and ABATE in Malvern. He was also a
successful member of AA, having just received his six-month coin. He
attended Bridgeport and Tussey Mountain High schools and was a graduate
of Upper Marion High School in 1976. Mr. Oswald had been employed as a
machinist at Bishop Tobe and the JLG and was currently employed at
Spring City Electric Manufacturing in Spring City. He enjoyed building
classic model cars and his Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle. A
funeral service will be held April 22, at the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Lanny Hoover officiating. Interment will be
made at Grandview Cemetery Saxton. 

John S. LAMBERSON, 87, of Mapleton, died April 18, 2004, at J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Born Aug. 22, 1916, in Clay Twp.,
Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late Charles and Jessie
(Stunkard) Lamberson. He was united in marriage to Virginia M. Bowman
June 29, 1940. Mrs. Lamberson preceded him in death Dec. 27, 1992. He is
survived by two sons and four daughters: Duane Lamberson of Mill Creek;
Valgene Lamberson of Mapleton; Dianne Pedersen of Asheville, N.C.; Kay
Good of Erie; Thelma Lamberson of Mapleton; and Tina Lawyer of Carlisle;
nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by one brother and one sister. Mr. Lamberson attended Valley View
Evangelical Church, Mapleton. He served in the United States Army, with
a tour of duty in Panama. He retired from PennDOT where he had worked as
a truck driver. Prior to that, he had been employed by D.W. Miller Inc.,
Huntingdon, as a construction worker. A memorial service will be held
April 22, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev.
Kenneth Morris officiating. Interment will be made in Bethel Cemetery,
New Grenada. 

James T. KALOS, 85, of Huntingdon, died unexpectedly April 18, 2004, at
J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Born Jan. 1, 1919, in
Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Theodore N. and Athena (Zozos)
Kalogeropulos. He was united in marriage to Margaret Dorothy Loftus
April 17, 1943, in Pittsburgh. His wife preceded him in death March 8,
1988. He is survived by two sons: James L. Kalos, and his wife, Diane
(Schock), of Walker Twp., Huntingdon, and Richard T. Kalos of
Huntingdon; and his nephew, John A. Loftus of Alexandria, Va., who was
reared in Mr. Kalos' home. Also surviving are five grandchildren:
Michele (Kalos) Speck, and her husband, Jeffrey, with whom Mr. Kalos
resided since 1989; Lisa (Kalos) Rudy, and her husband, Troy, of
Duncansville; Lori (Kalos) Arbogast of Williamsport; James M. Kalos of
Delaware Water Gap; and Daniel Hamaker of Smithfield Twp., Huntingdon;
and eight great-grandchildren: Michael "Boomer" Kalos and Matthew and
Bryant Speck, all of Huntingdon; Nickolas and Margo Rudy of
Duncansville; and Deanna Arbogast and Madeline and Demetria Hall, all of
Williamsport. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynne (Kalos)
Hamaker. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was
preceded in death by one brother and one sister, Nicholas T. Kalos in
1981 and Helen Kalos in 1993. Mr. Kalos was a member of Most Holy
Trinity Catholic Church in Huntingdon. He was a member of Standing Stone
Post No. 1754 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member and past treasurer
of the Frank P. Hommon Post No. 24 American Legion, both in Huntingdon,
he was also a member of the board of directors of the Huntingdon Cinema
and a life member of the former Huntingdon No. 2 Fire Co. Mr. Kalos
attended public schools in Pittsburgh, graduating from Carrick High
School with the Class of 1935. He served during World War II with the
U.S. Army's 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain
Division in the North Apennines and Po Valley Italian campaign. He was
honorably discharged in 1945, having attained the rank of technician
fifth grade and having been awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for
his meritorious service and wounds sustained during his tour of duty. In
the early 1940s, Mr. Kalos managed the News Reel Theatre in Pittsburgh.
Following his military service, he resumed theater management at the
Adelphia until 1948. From 1948 until 1960, he managed the Clifton
Theatre in Huntingdon and became owner of the Clifton business from 1960
until 1972. He managed Huntingdon's Grand Theatre from 1956 until 1960.
From 1972 until 1974, Mr. Kalos managed the Huntingdon Tastee Freeze and
from 1974 until 1979, he managed the Huntingdon Holiday Inn Junior. In
1989, he retired from the J.B. Kunz Co, at the age of 70. In 1990,
following his formal retirement, be began his present career with the
Sheetz Stores in Huntingdon. Mr. Kalos was a Huntingdon Bearcat sports
fanatic. He also enjoyed the Pittsburgh sports teams, thoroughbred horse
racing and his morning sports chats with his numerous friends during his
work at the uptown Sheetz store. He loved children as much as they love
him. A funeral Mass will be held April 21, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic
Church, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David J. Arseneault serving as
celebrant. Interment will be made in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Walker
Twp. Huntingdon. 

Freda Hetrick Lentz BAGGOTT, 91, of West Monroe, La., and formerly of
Huntingdon, died April 18, 2004, in West Monroe. Born May 7, 1912, in
Bakers Summit, she was the daughter of the late John and Sophia Lee. She
was thrice married, first to W. Earl Hetrick Jan. 15, 1931. Mr. Hetrick
preceded her in death July 15, 1966. On March 28, 1968, she was wed to
Paul C. Lentz, who preceded her in death in October 1996. She was united
in marriage to Roland Baggott Nov. 14, 2003. Mr. Baggott survives at
home. She is survived by a daughter, Rita E. Roark of West Monroe, La.;
two grandchildren, David L. Shaner and Rita K. Masimore, both of
Pennsylvania; and three great-grandchildren, Zach Masimore, Tara
Masimore and Magan Shaner, all of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in
death by a daughter, Linda Lee Snare, and two sisters, Anna Teeters and
Rhoda Alexander. Mrs. Baggott was a member of the Christian &
Missioniary Alliance Church in Huntingdon and the New Hope Tabernacle in
Bradentown, Fla. She worked for McCrory's Distribution Center in
Huntingdon and York, retiring in 1974. Following her retirement from
McCrory's, she moved to Bradenton, Fla., and worked for the Arthritis
Foundation until 2001, when she retired at age 89. Mrs. Baggott enjoyed
reading, making crafts and crocheting. A memorial service will be held
at the convenience of Mrs. Baggott's family 

Helen (Gifford) BARBEN, 89, a resident of Valley View Haven, Belleville,
formerly of Mount Union, died April 19, 2004, at the nursing home. She
was born Nov. 14, 1914, in Mount Union, the daughter of the late James
and Martha (Morgan) Gifford. She was united in marriage to Gerald L.
"Buck" Barben Nov. 17, 1941. He preceded her in death May 9, 1981. She
is survived by one sister, Grace App of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Gifford
was preceded in death by the following sisters and brothers: P. Jayne
Gifford, Preston Gifford, Clair Gifford, Veda Hazzard, Mary Harris and
Paul Gifford. Mrs. Barben was a member of the Mount Union Presbyterian
Church. She attended the Mount Union Schools. She was a licensed
practical nurse, having been employed by the Masonic Homes in
Elizabethtown for a number of years. She had also worked as a private
nurse. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the
family.

James Thomas EYERLY, 39, of Huntingdon, died April 19, 2004, at his
home. He had been in failing health for the past few years. He was born
April 1, 1965, in Upper Darby, the son of Dr. William John Eyerly who
survives along with his wife, Dianna S. Eyerly in St. Augustine, Fla.,
and the late Maryann Elizabeth (McKenna) Eyerly. Also surviving are a
son, Andrew J. Eyerly of Huntingdon,and a daughter, Holly D. Eyerly of
St. Augustine, Fla. Three brothers and a sister survive: William J.
Eyerly Jr. and his wife, Nina, of Gainesville, Fla., R. Scott Fisher of
Helo, Hawaii, and Brent E. Fisher and Heather E. Holthan and her
husband, Christopher, all of Gainesville, Fla. Two nephews also survive.
Mr, Eyerly was a member of the Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church,
Huntingdon. He graduated from Juniata Valley High School with the Class
of 1983 and later graduated from South Hills Business School. He worked
as a computer consultant for Citicorp of Frederick, Md., until his
disability and then privately, folllowing his illness, as a computer
analyst and programmer. He enjoyed computers, music and reading. He had
resided in Huntingdon County since 1978. A memorial service will be held
April 27, at Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Huntingdon. The
Rev. David J. Arsenault will officiate. Interment will be private. 

Kermit L. WIBLE, 91, formerly of Robertsdale, Saxton and Huntingdon,
died April 19, 2004, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon. Born
April 28, 1912, in Three Springs, he was the son of the late Frank and
Luetta (Kirkpatrick) Wible. He was united in marriage to Anna Erma
Hileman Oct. 5, 1935, in Centre Hall. Mr. Wible preceded him in death
March 9, 2004. He is survived by a son, K. Leon Wible, and his wife,
Eunice, of Leesburg, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Cutshall, and her husband,
Edgar. of Huntingdon; six grandchildren; Jeff Wible, Jamie Brown, Janice
Earley , Brenda Casner, Jay Wible and Brett Cutshall; and nine
great-grandchildren. A sister, Mary Grace Wible of Kutztown, survives.
Mr. Wible was a member of Saxton United Methodist Church and taught
men's Sunday School in Robertsdale. He was a member of NEA, PSEA and the
Retired Teachers Association. He was a member and past master of
Cromwell Lodge FA&M, Orbisonia, and a member of the Harrisburg
Consistory and the Jaffa Shrine Temple, Altoona. He was also a member
and past president of the Huntingdon County Shriners Club. Additionally,
he was a member and past president of the Robertsdale and Saxton Lions
clubs and a member of the Huntingdon Lions Club and formerly served as
Lions Club zone chairman. He was also a member and past president of the
Broad Top Old-Timers Association and a member of the Broad Top Baseball
Hall of Fame. He served on the board of directors of the First National
bank of Three Springs from 1955-1967. Mr. Wible was a 1930 graduate of
Orbisonia High School and a 1934 graduate of Shippensburg State Teachers
College. He taught school in Cherry Grove, Donation, Three Springs,
Robertsdale and Tussey Mountain. He coached the Robertsdale High School
football team from 1942-1947. Funeral services will be held April 22, at
the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Wayne L.
Richards officiating. Interment will be made in Three Springs Memorial
Cemetery. 

Floyd Auman CONLON, 73, of 2510 Blair Ave., Huntingdon, died April 19,
2004, following a brief illness, at Mount Nittany Medical center, State
College. He was born July 31, 1930, in Aitch, the son of the late H.
Thomas Sr. and Gladys (Auman) Conlon. He was married to Donna Kann July
23, 1955, in Fort Loudon. His wife survives at their Huntingdon
residence. A son, Floyd Thomas "Tom" Conlon and his wife, Ronda, and a
daughter, Luann C. Mellott and her husband, David K., both of
Huntingdon, and two granddaughters, Stacy L. Conlon and Emily Dawn
Conlon, both of Altoona, survive. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs.
Richard (Flora) Lynn of York, Mary Elizabeth Knable of Huntingdon and
Caroline "Jane" Koveleski of New Egypt, N.J.; and two brothers, Harold
T. Conlon Jr. of Roaring Spring and John Conlon of Huntingdon. He was
preceded in death by an infant sister, Margie Conlon. Mr. Conlon was a
member of the Twelfth Street United Methodist Church. He was active in
Masonic organizations, having served as a past master of Mt. Moriah
Lodge No. 300 F&AM, past secretary/treasurer of the 34th Masonic
District School of Instruction, past commander and current treasurer of
Huntingdon Commandery No. 65, past high priest and current treasurer of
Standing Stone Royal Arch Chapter No. 201 and member of Jaffa Shrine
Temple. He was a member of the Smithfield Fire Co. where he was an
active volunteer since joining the company Jan. 21, 1085. He attended
the Grantsville one-room school house at Aitch and graduated from
Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1947. Mr. Conlon served during
the Korean Conflict from March 12, 1952 to March 11, 1954, as a corporal
with the III Corps of the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded the
National Defense Service Medal. He then served from 1954 to 1964 with
the Pennsylvania National Guard Co. A, 2nd - 112th Infantry, Huntingdon.
He retired in 1986 after 35 years of service with Owens Corning
Fiberglas as a foreman and supervisor. In December 1987, Mr. Conlon went
to work as a salesperson in the hardware department at C.H. Miller Co.
until its closing in December 2002. Mr. Conlon was a lifetime resident
of Huntingdon County. He and his wife had resided in Smithfield Twp.
from 1963 until moving with his daughter and son-in-law 2 1/2 years ago.
A funeral service will be held April 22, at the Cutright-Speck funeral
Home, Huntingdon. The Rev. Dr. Theodore E. Kiffer, Hospice Chaplain,
will officiate. Interment will be made in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens,
Walker Twp. 

Carl S. UPDEGROVE, 83, of Allensville, died April 20, 2004, at Lewistown
Hospital. He was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Liverpool, the son of the late
William and Kathryn (Spotts) Updegrove. He was married to Kathleen
Kennedy June 10, 1942. Mrs. Updegrove survives. Also surviving are a
daughter, Susan (Updegrove) Erhard and her husband, Dennis, of
Mechanicsburg, and a son, Jonathan W. Updegrove and his wife, Cindy, of
Allensville. There are six surviving grandchildren, Carla Cross, Katrina
Collins, Jennifer Kroboth, Carrie Starling, Christopher Updegrove and
David Erhard; and five great-grandchildren, Caleb Collins, Micah
Colllins, Meghan Collins, Kennedy Starling and Evan Kroboth. He was
preceded in death by a son, David E. Updegrove, Oct. 12, 1973, and a
brother, Martin Updegrove. For a number of years, Ronald and his sister,
Kim Choy, and Marsha Wing were part of the family, along with Eugene
"Pete" Mateer. Mr. Updegrove was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church
in Allensville and had served on the church council. He was always
interested in the church's welfare. He was the first fire chief of the
Allensville Fire Co. and was a charter member of the Mill Creek Lions
Club and the Allensville Lions Club. He was a past president of both
clubs. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and
former Kishacoquillas School Board member. Mr. Updegrove was president
of Updegrove School Buses Inc. which was founded in 1948. He also served
as the postmaster for eight years at the U.S. Post Office in
Allensville. He raised turkeys and was affiliated with the
Kishacoquillas Hatchery in the 1960's. He and his wife enjoyed traveling
in the U.S.A. and abroad. He was an avid flyer and owned his own plane
for 11 years; he enjoyed antique automobiles with his son, Jonathan, and
he enjoyed hunting. A funeral service will be held at April 24, at St.
Paul's Lutheran Church, Allensville, with the Rev. Anna M. Ritter
officiating. Interment will be made in Allensville Presbyterian
Cemetery. 

Brittany Dawn BAKER, 16, of Huntingdon, died April 21, 2004, at J.C.
Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, after a very brief illness with
cancer. She was born Oct. 1, 1987, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, the
daughter of the late David Edgar Baker and Lee Ann Mellott who survives
at home. Also surviving are a brother, Brandon Charles Mellott-Emory,
and two sisters, Saphire Ann Baker and Samantha Nicole DeArmitt, all at
home. Her maternal grandmother and great-grandfather, Verlee J. (Haupt)
Mellott and Charles W. Haupt, both of Huntingdon, and her paternal
grandmother, Helen L. (Himes) Baker, also of Huntingdon, survive, as
well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by
her maternal grandfather, Harrison Eugene Mellott, her maternal
great-grandmother, Sarah Jane (Davis) Haupt, and paternal grandfather,
Donald Eugene Baker Sr. Miss Baker was of the Free Methodist faith. She
was a student of the Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center in
the Horticulture Department and she was a sophomore at Huntingdon area
High School with the Class of 2006. She loved working with flowers and
collecting bears. Miss Baker was a lifetime resident of Huntingdon. A
funeral service will be held April 24, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral
Home, Huntingdon. The Rev. Dr. Timothy Weitkamp will officiate.
Interment will be made at Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon.

Robert E. "Dick" VARNER, 70, of Mill Creek, died unexpectedly April 22,
2004, at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Oct. 17,
1933, in Altoona, he was the son of Mary E. (Pagenta) Varner of Mount
Union, and the late William T. Varner. He was married to the former
Carolyn J. Haney on July 12, 1965, in Huntingdon. Mrs. Varner survives
at their home. Also surviving are one daughter, Christy A. Varner at
home and the following brothers and sisters, Stewart Varner, Mulberry,
Fla.; John Varner, Connelly's Springs, N.C., Rosie Parks, Burnham,
Shirley Varner, Rochester, N.Y., and Jeanette Varner Bennion, Mount
Union. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bruce Varner, and an
infant sister, Annamary Varner. Mr. Varner retired in 1982 as manager of
Minute Man Service Station in Rochester, N.Y., and prior to that he
worked for Fashion Park Clothing Manufacturing, also in Rochester. Mr.
Varner enjoyed helping others and was a avid New York Yankees and
professional wresting fan. Funeral services will be held April 26, at
the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union with the Rev. Raymond
Crownover officiating. Interment will be in the Newton Hamilton Memorial
Cemetery. 

Florine M. (Cornelius) KNABLE, 88, a resident of Westminster Woods,
Huntingdon, for the past seven years, and formerly of Allenport, Mount
Union, died April 22, 2004, at Westminster Woods. She was born Feb. 11,
1916, in Shirley Twp., a daughter of the late Charles David and Myrtle
Lucretia (Smith) Cornelius. She was united in marriage to Charles A.
Knable on March 31, 1934, at their home in Allenport, by the Rev. Eldon
Matlock. Mr. Knable preceded her in death June 1, 1996. Surviving are
one daughter and three sons: Mrs. Warren (Lucretia) Somers, Bellefonte;
Leroy E. Knable, Honolulu, Hawaii; Carl D. Knable, and his wife,
Darlene, Dover; and Kenneth D. Knable, and his wife, Susan, Huntingdon.
She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles
Kenneth Knable, and four brothers: Earl, Harvey, George and Morris
Cornelius. Mrs. Knable was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Mount
Union. She was a homemaker who devoted part of her life to baby-sitting
for different people. Funeral services will be held April 26, at the
Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Pastors Thomas Coleman
and Warren Somers officiating. Interment will take place in the Mount
Nebo Cemetery, Mount Union. 

Hilda E. MCCARTNEY, 63, died April 22, 2004, at the home of her daughter
and husband, Wilma and Terry Kelly of Mount Union, where she had been
residing. She had been in failing health. Born Aug. 5, 1940, in
Woodbury, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Bertha
I. (Longnecker) Swope. She was united in marriage to Wilbert I. "Wimp"
McCartney Nov. 6, 1957, in Allenport, Mount Union. He died Sept. 11,
2001. She is survived by the following children: Marty Eichelberger and
husband, Kenny, of Mill Creek; Hilda McCartney of Mount Union; Peg
Skipper of Huntingdon; Wilma Kelly and her husband, Terry, of Cedar
Crest/Lucy Furnace; and Wilbert "Bud" McCartney Jr. and his girlfriend,
Kathy Myers of Mapleton. A granddaughter, Crystal Matthew, and a
great-grandson, Kurtis Hardy of McVeytown, were reared in the home.
There are 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A sister, Edna
Beaver of Mount Union, and a brother, Gilbert Longnecker of Dorest,
Ohio, survive, as well as several other brothers and sisters in Ohio.
Mrs. McCartney attended Huntingdon and Mount Union schools. She was
employed for 10 years at the Robin Footwear plant in Mount Union until
its closing. She loved spending time with her family and attending her
grandson and great-grandson's baseball games. A funeral service will be
held April 24, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with
the Rev. Dr. Theodore Kiffer, Hospice chaplain, officiating. Interment
will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

August Gustav DREWS JR., 59, of Petersburg, died April 22, 2004, at J.C.
Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. He was born Aug. 1, 1944, in
Philadelphia, the son of the late August Gustav Sr. and Annie (Salmon)
Drews. He was united in marriage to Eileen M. Gowen Nov. 18, 1967, at
St. Williams Roman Catholic Church, Philadelphia. Mrs. Drews survives at
their home in Logan Twp. Also surviving are a daughter, Tata Wachowski,
and her husband, Mark, of Sicklersville, N.J., as well as two
granddaughters, Erica Wachowski and Lauren Wachowski. Two sisters
survive: Barbara Reiss of Philadelphia and Joan Glinski and her husband,
Jerry, of Colmar. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Helverson.
Mr. Drews was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Huntingdon. He
graduated from Roxborough High School with the Class of 1963. He served
as a sergeant with the U.S. Army Reserve from 1964 to 1970. Mr. Drews
was self-employed in cleaning services. He was an avid outdoorsman,
enjoying both hunting and fishing, and he also enjoyed gardening. He has
resided at his Logan Twp. home since 1995. A celebration of life service
will be held April 25, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Huntingdon, with
Father Tom Warne officiating. Interment will be private. 

David Allen DONELSON, 46, of Cassville, died April 23, 2004, at his home
in Todd Twp., Huntingdon County. He was born Sept. 15, 1957, in
Huntingdon, the son of Delores (McKnight) and the late Arthur Donelson.
Surviving, along with his mother of Cassville, are a daughter, Shannon
Janssen of Deland, Fla., and two granddaughters, Jade and Kyla. Four
brothers and a sister survive: Chester Donelson of Three Springs, Dennis
Donelson of Six Mile Run, Robert Donelson of Cassville, Timothy Donelson
of Broad Top, and Norma Schooley of Cassville. Two brothers, Jimmy and
Gary, are deceased. Mr. Donelson was a member of the Grace Bible Church,
Cassville. He was currently on disability, having last been employed by
K.L. Mills Inc. of Orbisonia. A funeral service will be held April 27,
at Grace Bible Church, Cassville, with the Rev. John Traxler
officiating. Interment will be made in trough Creek Cemetery, Todd. 

Leroy H. LADELY, 67, of Mount Union, died unexpectedly April 23, 2004,
at the Beaver Medical Center in Beaver. Be was born Oct. 12, 1936, in
Lucas County, Iowa, the son of the late Clayton and Margaret (Wolf)
Ladely. He is survived by three daughters and a son, Jody B. Ruess and
her husband, Charles, of New Columbia; Carol M. Ladely of Swansboro,
N.C.; Sandra L. Bavard and her husband, Jeff, of Chesterfield, Va.; and
Leroy H. Ladely of Beaver. There are four grandchildren. The following
brothers and sisters also survive: Harold Ladely of Iowa, Clifford
Ladely of Nevada, Marvin Ladely of Wisconsin, Caroline Witt of Iowa and
Shirley Boliner of Nevada. He was preceded in death by three sisters.
Mr. Ladely was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Mount
Union Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5754 and the Mount Union American
Legion Post 107. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict
and was a Navy Seal, spending much of his duty aboard a U.S. Navy
submarine. Mr. Ladely had most recently been employed by Kelly and Son
Oil Co. in Philadelphia and prior to that, the had traveled the country
for several years as a repairman for commercial heating systems. He had
also at one time owned and operated a heating and air conditioning
company in Philadelphia. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, having
enjoyed both fresh and saltwater fishing trips to Canada. A funeral
service will be held April 28, 2004, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home
Mount Union, with the Rev. Ed Seeley officiating. 

James B. HERNCANE, 92, formerly of Dillsburg, died April 23, at Forest
Park Health Center, Carlisle. Born May 7, 1911, in Huntingdon, he was
the son of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Hutzler) Herncane. Mr.
Herncane is the widower of the late Olive S. Sheely Herncane who passed
away Jan. 29, 1998. He is survived by two sons, David P. Herncane of
East Berlin and James B. Herncane of Seeley Lake, Mont; one daughter,
Susan B. Broadnix, of Newtown; six grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren. One brother, Richard Herncane of Huntingdon,
survives. Mr. Herncane was a member of ST. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Dillsburg. He was a member of the Dillsburg Lions Club; a 32
degree Mason with the R.W. Grand Lodge No. 629, F.&A.M., Harrisburg;
Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Harrisburg Forest #13; Mechanicsburg V.F.W.; and
Dillsburg Senior Activity Center. He also volunteered with New Hope
Ministries. He was retired federal investigator and was a U.S. Army
veteran of 28 years and served during WW II. Funeral services will be
held April 30, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dillsburg,
with the Rev. Patrick J. Rooney officiating. Interment with military
honors, will be in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. 

Peggy Ruth DIDYK, 44, of Todd, died April 23, 2004, in Todd. She was
born April 20, 1960, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, the
daughter of the late William and Agnes (Jones) Smith. She was married to
William Didyk Nov. 30, 1980, at the United Church of Christ, Saxton, Mr.
Didyk died the same day, April 23, 2004. Surviving are a son, Adam
Joseph Didyk, and a daughter, Tracy Jo Didyk, both of Todd, and a
granddaugher, Willow Anice Didyk, also of Todd. A brother, Jerry Smith
and his wife, Cheryl, of Todd, also survives. Mrs. Didyk was of the
Protestant faith. She graduated from Tussey Mountain High School, Class
of 1979. She was employed as a material flow specialist in the planning
department at JLG Industries, McConnellsburg. She enjoyed flowers and
gardening (especially strawberries), fishing, hunting and raising
Pekingese dogs. A funeral service will be held April 28, at the
Robertsdale Church of God, Robertsdale, with Pastor Donald Simmons
officiating. Interment will be made in the Broad Top IOOF Cemetery,
Broad Top City. 

William Joseph Didyk, 42, of Todd, died April 23, 2004, in Todd. He was
born Sept. 9, 1961, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, the son of the late
Joseph Didyk and Florence V. Neuder who survives in Robertsdale. He was
married to Peggy Ruth Smith Nov. 30, 1980, at the United Church of
Christ in Saxton. Mrs. Didyk died the same day, April 23, 2004. In
addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Adam Joseph Didyk, and
a daughter, Tracy Jo Didyk, both of Todd, and a granddaughter, Willow
Anice Didyk, also of Todd. The following sisters survive: Violet Watkins
of Robertsdale, wife of the late Lewellyn Watkins; Linda Rhoat of
Conwingo, Md.; and Janet Dixon and her husband, Ronnie, and Lois Singer
and her husband, Kenneth, all of Six Mile Run. Mr. Didyk was of the
Protestant faith. He graduated from Tussey Mountain High School with the
Class of 1980. He was employed at JLG Industries, McConnellsburg, as a
welder. He enjoyed outdoor activities, gardening, fishing, hunting,
working around the house and searching for mushrooms. He also enjoyed
football, particularly the Pittsburgh Steelers. A funeral service will
be held April 28, at the Robertsdale Church of God, Robertsdale, with
Pastor Donald Simmons officiating. Interment will be private. 

Richard B. KELLER, 52, of Montgomery County, died April 24, 2004, of
natural causes at his residence. Born in Phoenixville, he was the son of
the late C. Blair and Mary H. (Hartman) Keller. He is survived by two
sisters, Joyce K. (Keller) Schaeffer of Christiana and Janet K.
Shellington of Womelsdorf. Mr. Keller was past president of the FEBT
Railroad in Orbisonia. He was a graduate of Conestoga High School and
was currently employed as a merchandiser on E-Bay. He also worked at
various Clover Department Stores as a store manager. A memorial service
will be held May 1, at the Lamm and Witman Funeral Home Inc.,
Wernersville. Interment will be private. 

Paul Dawayne BRUMBAUGH, 73, of Saxton, died April 25, 2004, at Altoona
Hospital in Altoona. Born Jan. 7, 1931, at the family home in Saxton, he
was the son of the late Theodore and Rosa (Hoover) Brumbaugh. He was
united in marriage to Mary J. Neville Jan. 6, 1951, in Cumberland, Md.
He is survived by his wife and four sons: Jerry D. Brumbaugh, and his
wife, Lana J., of Saxton; Robert R. Brumbaugh, and his wife, Joi, of
Loretto; R. Graig Brumbaugh, and his wife, Dixie, of Saxton; and Pastor
Alan E. Brumbaugh, and his wife, Sally, of New Paris. He is also
survived by six grandchildren; Paul Brumbaugh of Saxton; Mrs. Roger
(Carey) Salada of Waco, Texas; Susan Brumbaugh of Saxton; Wendi
Brumbaugh of Mount Union; Jamie Brumbaugh of State College; Aaron
Brumbaugh of New Paris and Rebecca Brumbaugh of New Paris; one
great-granddaughter and four great-grandsons. Two brothers survive:
Samuel T. Brumbaugh of Saxton and Ellis Brumbaugh, and his wife, Betty,
of Holt, Mich. He was preceded in death by two infant granddaughters,
Tracey and Christina Brumbaugh; two brothers, John and Robert Brumbaugh;
a sister, Ruth Brumbaugh; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Samuel T. (Alice)
Brumbaugh. Mr. Brumbaugh was a lifetime member of the Raven Run Church
of the Brethren. His church was an important part of his life and as an
active member, he served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent,
church treasurer and administrative board member. He was actively
involved with the Saxton Little League for a number of years, serving as
coach, manager and president of the organization continuously for 38
years. He was a school board member and director for the Tussey Mountain
School District for 16 years and served as chairman of the Liberty Twp.
Sewer Authority for four years. Mr. Burmbaugh attended Saxton-Liberty
High School. He retired in 1990 after 39 years of service with the
Saxton Bottling Co., the predecessor to Altoona Pepsi-Cola Bottling. He
was employed as a driver/salesman, and later as a route manager. He
worked after his retirement for the Liberty Coal Co. as a manager from
1992 until the present. Mr. Brumbaugh was an avid sports fan. Funeral
services will be held April 29, at Raven Run Church of the Brethren,
with the Rev. Donald E. Peters, pastor of Pine Glen Church of the
Brethren, officiating. Interment will be made in Bunker Hill Cemetery,
Saxton.

Gerald W. BAIR, 56, of Greensburg, died April 26, 2004, at Shady Side
Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Sept. 9, 1947, in Lewistown, the son
of the late Herman and Louise (Roach) Bair. He is survived by his wife,
Darlene (Corcelius) Bair; a son, Randell Bair of Greensburg and Port St.
Lucie, Fla.; and a sister, Mary Meyers, and her husband, Craig, his
mother-in-law, Diane Fleck, all of Huntingdon. He is also survived by
his closest friends and business partners, Rich and Leslie Thies of New
Port Beach, Calif., and seven nieces and nephews. Mr. Bair was a life
member of the Frank P. Hommon American Legion, Standing Stone Post No.
1754 VFW and Elks Lodge, all of Huntingdon. He was also a member of the
Latrobe County Club, PGA County Club and the Touchdown Club of Latrobe.
"Jerry" was a graduate of Huntingdon Area High School, Class of 1965.
Mr. Bair was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served with the
United States Army. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He was vice
president of Continental Drilling, U.S., and President of Bair
Construction Co. A memorial service will be held April 30, at Unity
Chapel, Unity Twp., Westmoreland County, with the Rev. Donald W. Graff
officiating. 

Mary H. (Forshey) HAUN, 66, of Blair House Apartments, Huntingdon, died
April 26, 2004, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College. Born
Oct. 5, 1937, in Pinecroft, she was the daughter of Harry Sr. and Anna
Forshey. She was united in marriage to Robert E. Haun Sr., who preceded
her in death Feb. 25, 1987. She is survived by six children: Leon
Hornberger Jr. of Altoona; Leona Hornberger of California; Robert E.
Haun Jr., and his wife, Barbara, of Johnstown; Ronald E. Haun Sr., and
his wife, Lucy, of Huntingdon; Rebecca E. Diggins, and her husband
Lance. if Petersburg; and Raymond E. Haun, and his wife, Denise, of
State College; 29 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Four
brothers and three sisters survive: Harry Forshey Jr. of Altoona; Paul
Forshey of Texas; Benjamin Forshey of Duncansville; Arthur Forshey of
Mount Union; Pearl Hornberger of Altoona; Louise Aurandt of California;
and Shirley Musso of Mount Union. Mrs. Haun was a member of the Ladies
Auxiliary to the Standing Stone Post No. 1754 Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Huntingdon. She worked as a cook and waitress at Diner 22, Grubb's Diner
and Jerry's Diner. Most recently, she was employed as a cook at Walt's
Cafe in Huntingdon. Funeral services will be held April 28, at the
Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with Major Ronald G. Freiert
officiating. Interment will be made in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg.

Robert Anthony Newcombe, 83, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Allegheny
General Hospital in Pittsburgh, two weeks after suffering a stroke. He
was a longtime resident of Bradford, where he lived since 1972. Robert,
better known as "Bob" or "Newk," was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Huntingdon,
to the late Robert Maxwell Newcombe and Jane Ann Iveson Newcombe. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary
Newcombe Lewis; and two brothers, John and Jim. He is survived by a
brother, George Porter, and his wife, Marjorie Peightel of Huntingdon,
who reside in Bridgewater, N.J. Bob attended the Huntingdon public
schools, began his higher education at Juniata College and graduated
from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. In the
interval between his years at Juniata College and Ohio University, Bob
served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the
Mediterranean Theatre. He participated in 50 missions as a technical
sergeant aboard a B-25 in the 434th bomb squadron. He was the recipient
of the Air Medal with nine clusters. When at Juniata, he met his wife of
61 years -- Ann Maria Diehm -- who preceded him in death just a year ago
on May 1, 2003. Bob is survived by a daughter, Barbara Ann, and her
husband, David Gumpper, of Mount Bethel; five sons, David A. Newcombe,
and his wife, Pat, McCauley, of Ferrum, Va., Robert D. Newcombe, of
Butler, John W. Newcombe and Joseph M. Newcombe, both of Bradford, and
Thomas I., and his wife, Deborah, of Titusville; 11 grandchildren, Leah
and Paul Gumpper, Meghan McCauley, Michael and Beth Newcombe, Dustin
John Newcombe, Katie and Andrew Newcombe, and Cory, Ashley and David
Newcombe. In 1952, Bob Newcombe went back to college and remained there
until his retirement in 1993. From 1952 to 1957, he served as the first
director of admissions at Juniata College and his lifelong passion for
advising and recruiting students, especially non-athletes, upgrading
admissions standards, and reorganizing admission departments began. Over
his long career, he also worked as associate director of admissions at
Bucknell University (1957 to 1960), administrative assistant to the
director of athletics at Penn State (1960 to 1963), director of
admissions at Lycoming College (1963 to 1968), field director for the
Alumni Association of Penn State (1968 to 1970), director of admissions
at the University of Pittsburgh (1970 to 1972), and special assistant to
the president at the University of Pittsburgh -- Bradford (1972 until
his retirement in 1993). During his career, Bob Newcombe visited every
school district in Pennsylvania and many surrounding states. He helped
innumerable students make important life decisions about education and
the direction of their future. He loved what he did and he did what he
loved. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at John B. Brown
Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Saturday at the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, Fifth and Mifflin
streets, Huntingdon. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the
church, with the Rev. Richard E. Gardiner officiating. Burial will be in
Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Walker Township, Huntingdon. 

Alberta E. BRUMBAUGH, 86, formerly of Cassville, died April 27, 2004, at
Woodland Retirement Center in Orbisonia. Born Sept. 9, 1917, in Cass
Twp., Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late Orris and
Gertrude (Dell) McNerlin. She was united in marriage to John W.
Brumbaugh, who preceded her in death Jan. 18, 1976. Surviving are three
sons and two daughters: John R. Brumbaugh of Mapleton; Betty Baker of
Cassville; William O. Brumbaugh of Cassville; Judy Rhoades of McVeytown;
and Richard L. Brumbaugh of Mapleton; as well as 17 grandchildren and 37
great-grandchildren. Three sisters survive: Ethel Ramey of Mapleton,
Grace McNerlin of Tyrone and Linda Mentzer of Chambersburg. She was
preceded in death by six brothers. Mrs. Brumbaugh was of the Protestant
faith. At one time, she was a member of the Tough Creek Valley Fire Co.
Ladies Auxiliary; Frances Rebekah Lodge No. 22, Cassville; and the Three
Springs Senior Citizens. She was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services
will be held April 29, at the Robert I. McClain Funeral Home, Cassville,
with the Rev. Wayne Richards officiating. Interment will be made in
Cassville Cemetery. 

Pastor Oliver Rockne SHAAL, 61, of 130 Hoosier Road, Saxton, died
unexpectedly April 27, 2004, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona. Born June 8,
1943, in Roaring Spring, he was the son of Ruth (Harvey) Shaal Wilkins,
who survives in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and the late David Shaal. He was
also preceded in death by his stepfather, Bill Wilkins. He was united in
marriage to Marla J. Mosebey Aug. 7, 1971, at the Everett Church of God
by Pastor C.B. Shaal. He is survived by his wife at home and three sons:
Tim Shaal of Shippensburg, Jonathan Shaal of Orlando, Fla. and Andrew
Shaal at home. Two brothers survive: Gary Shaal of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
and Dwight Shaal of Conway, S.C. Pastor Shaal was currently serving as
pastor of the Walnut Grove Church of God in Maddensville, where he has
served for the past six years. At one time, he served at the Abundant
Life Fellowship and the Raystown Brethren Church, both in Saxton, and
for a number of years conducted the children's church services at the
Everett Church of God. For eight years, he held the Bible Story Hour
Ministry for Children in Hollidaysburg. He was a member of the Broad Top
Area Ministerium. He was a 1961 graduate of South Dade High School in
Florida and also graduated from Holmes Theological Seminary in South
Carolina. Pastor Shaal enjoyed coin collection, cooking and reading and
had a devoted passion for his ministry. Funeral services will be held
April 30, at the Church of God Tabernacle in Saxton, with Pastor Alfred
Chamberlain and Pastor Gary Boor officiating. Interment will be made in
Yellow Creek Reformed Cemetery, Hopewell. 

Michael W. AURAND, 49, of Mount Union, died unexpectedly April 27, 2004,
at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Born Nov. 14, 1954, in
Mount Union, he was the son of the late William W. and Gladys K.
(Mohler) Aurand. He was united in marriage to Diana D. "Dee" (Mentzer)
Aurand. He is survived by his wife at home and four sons and one
daughter: Michael W. Aurand Jr.,and his wife, Roberta, of Mapleton;
Travis J. Aurand of Mill Creek; Lisa Gifford, and her husband, Jason, of
Fort Meade, Md.; Tim Brown and his wife, Carrie, of Wichita, Kan.; and
Todd Brown at home. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Amber and
Jacob Gifford and Mikayla and Abigail Aurand. One brother and three
sisters survive: Bob M. Mohler, and his wife, Paula, of Huntingdon; Mrs.
Roger (Penny) Henry of Mount Union; Vickie Stitt of Huntingdon; and Mrs.
Harry (Darlene) Deline of Mount Union. Mr. Aurand was a 1973 graduate of
Mount Union Area High School. He served in Germany with the United
states Army. He was currently employed as a special Machinist at Bonney
Forge in Mount Union, where he had 15 years' service. Prior to that he
worked for Asplund for 15 years. He loved spending time with his
grandchildren, enjoyed sports and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Funeral services will be held April 30, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral
Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Gordon Ross officiating. Interment will
be made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg.

Joseph Clifford SCOTT, 72, of Huntingdon, died April 28, 2004, at J.C.
Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born May 13, 1931, in Huntingdon,
he was the son of Martha S. (Greenland) Scott, who survives at
Huntingdon, and the late Joseph P. Scott. He was united in marriage to
Shirley J. Reed Sept. 6, 1952, in Winchester, Va. He is survived by his
wife at home; two sons, Timothy L. Scott of Huntingdon; one daughter,
Trina L. Beeler of Kentucky; seven grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren. Three brothers survive: Robert Scott of Huntingdon,
Dean Scott of Pine Grove Mills and Fred Scott of Huntingdon. Mr. Scott
was an active member of Calvin United Methodist Church, where he served
as a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of Standing Stone Post No.
1754 VFW, Huntingdon and the Trough Creek Valley Sportsman's Club.
Interested in veterans affairs, he was also active in the Huntingdon
County Veterans Association. He was active in Boy Scouts since 1962
having served as the first cub-master of Pack 215 and the first
scoutmaster of Troop 215, both of Trough Creek Valley. He served in
various district and council positions and, in 1971, he was awarded the
District Award of Merit and, in 1976, the Silver Beaver for his
contributions to scouting. He was a vigil member of the Order of the
Arrow. Mr. Scott served as an administrative and supply technician for
the Pennsylvania National Guard at Huntingdon until his retirement
because of disability in 1974. Prior to that time he served in the
United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. During his tour in
the Air Force, he as awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), the
Korean Service Ribbon with six battle stars, the United Nations Medal,
the Presidential Unit Citation with one cluster, the Good Conduct Medal,
the Armed Services Reserve Medal and the Korean Presidential Citation.
During his career with the National Guard, he as awarded the General
Thomas J. Stewart Medal, the Pennsylvania Service Ribbon with Silver
Star, the 20-Year Service Medal and the Pennsylvania Commendation Medal.
Funeral services will be held April 30, at the Robert I. McClain Funeral
Home, Cassville, with the Rev. Donald Henderson and Pastor Dan
Mansberger officiating. Interment will be made in Trough Creek Valley
Baptist Cemetery, Calvin. 

JoAnne G. (Knisely) PRICE, 70, of Shade Gap, died April 28, 2004, at
Harrisburg General Hospital in Harrisburg. Born March 3, 1934, in Shade
Gap, she was the daughter of the late Willard and Mary (St. Clair)
Knisely. She was united in marriage to Joseph M. "Bill" Price who
preceded her in death in 2000. She is survived by a son, Joe Price II of
Shade Gap; two daughters, Rene Appleby, and her husband, Bobby, of Shade
Gap, and Beth Lerie, and her husband, Jeff, of Neelyton; five
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Two sisters and one brother
survive: Mrs. William (Martha) Kelly of Burnt Cabins, Mrs. Luther
(Madeline) Cornelius of Chambersburg and Richard Knisely of York. In
addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen
Kyler, and a brother, Bruce Knisely. Mrs. Price was a member of Fair
Ridge Assembly of God Church in Shade Gap and the Gideons Auxiliary.
Along with her husband, she owned and operated Sunny Ridge Restaurant
for about 20 years prior to selling the establishment in the past
several years. Funeral services will be held May 1, at the Fair Ridge
Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap, with the Revs. Marlin "Butch" Neil
and Wilson Boyd officiating. Interment will be made in fair Ridge
Assembly of God Cemetery, Shade Gap. 

Donald "Dick" Richard FROMM SR., 69, of Calvin and formerly of Paradise,
died April 28, 2004, after a brief illness. Born Nov. 3, 1934, in
Christiana, he was the son of the late Melvin and Alice (Young) Fromm.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan Elizabeth (Eisenberger)
Fromm; two sons, Donald "Rick" R. Fromm Jr. of California and Robin W.
Fromm, and his wife, Wendy (Garver), of Kinzers; and three daughters:
Barbara A. Colbert, and her husband, Herman, of Oregon; Beverly S.
Bossie, and her husband, Steven, of Maine; and Alice J. Babikow, and her
husband, Andrew, of Lancaster. He is also survived by seven
grandchildren. Two brothers, William Fromm of Ronks and Dennis Fromm of
New Holland survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin "Guy"
Fromm, who had resided in Gap. Mr. Fromm was of the Methodist faith. He
was active in Boy Scouts of America during the 1960s. He was a lifelong
truck driver and worked for various companies. He retired in 1996 from
Ned Bard and Son. Mr. Fromm enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. A
Memorial gathering will be held May 6, at Leacock Presbyterian Church,
Lincoln Highway, Paradise.
