Extracts of Franklin county material from the 27 Vol work of Josiah V. Thompson.
This Franklin County bible and other papers is in Vol 17. Thanks to Carolyn Shearer for
extracting this information. Special thanks to Charlee Wilson for painstakingly
editing the work from scanned images of volumes on microfilm.
The journals are now in the possession of the Western PA Historical Society in
Pittsburgh and are extremely fragile.
BIBLE AND FAMILY RECORDS - William Archibald and Margaret Thompson

At residence of Mrs Annie May Archibald No 460 E. Queen St, Chambersburg, Pa Aug 10, 1926 11 AM
Her father in law, Charles Bryan Archibald born in St Thomas Tp on the old Thompson farm
Oct 28, 1896 came downstairs on crutches, having been wounded Sept 29, 1918 in the Argonne Battle
necessitating the amputation of both legs. His sister living next door at No 464 is
Mrs Catharine Elizabeth Martin nee Archibald wife of Geo Guy Martin & has come in & she
says her father William Van Lear Archibald was the great grandson of Thomas Thompson & they
thought there was an old Thompson bible here. They have found an old Archibald bible
published by Mark & Charles Kerr Edinburgh 1789 & another 1850 both Archibald bibles.
They have not found the Thompson bible yet but think it is about the house somewhere.
They have brought out two or three boxes of papers, letters receipts etc dating back
to 1768 & earlier. Chas B. says they sold the old farm formerly ctg 500 A. then 200 A
in 1919 to a Rodgers who couldn't pay for it & was then acquired by Ira Shields who owns
it & lives on it. The graveyard of 95 perches & a roadway into it was reserved.
In this g.y. is buried Thomas Thompson, who was buried there & their father had pointed
out where he was buried. There is also the marker a native stone to his great Uncle
there with his name on it.
His father William Archibald was born on the farm & he too is buried there as are three
of his daughters, Mary Ann, Margaret & Martha & also his brothers Thomas T. & James, none
of whom were ever married & the stone there records their names. Wm V. himself, the only
one of the family who married & his sister Elisabeth are buried in the St Thomas Cemetery
at St Thomas Pa & have markers. Wm V's grandfather also William Archibald was the emigrant
coming from Londonderry, Ireland, whose passport is in his, Wm V's widow's safety deposit
box in the Valley Natl Bank here & Chas B. will get a copy of it & any other important old
papers locked up there & send to me, thus fixing the year of his coming over. This William
Archibald married Margaret, daughter of Thomas Thompson as the papers here show & he was
one of the Exrs of Thomas T's will.
Wm V. Archibald was born June 27, 1835 on the old farm in St Thomas Tp & died in St Thomas Pa
Feby 23, 1925. He was married to Annie May Swisher born at Pine Grove Furnace, Pa June 23, 1878,
daughter of Charles Edmund Swisher & his wife Mary Jane Kearns. They had two children born on
the old farm as above:
1. Charles Bryan Archibald born Oct 28, 1896
2. Catherine Elizabeth Archibald born Oct 18, 1899
1. Charles B. enlisted in the World War Sept 17, 1917 in 316th Infantry Machine Gun Co 79th Div
was stationed for a time at Camp Meade left camp July 4, 1918 sailed from Hoboken, NJ
on July 7, 1918, went immediately to France & went forward to the trenches & on Sept 2th
went forward in the Argonne Forest drive & over the top on that day, was wounded by high
explosive on Sept 29, 1918 which necessitated the amputation of both legs at two different
hospitals in France & by reason of gangrenous infections other operations or amputations
became necessary until he had had five more on this side at the Walter Reed Hospital in
Washington D.C. until he had had seven in all. He sailed back from France on Dec 25, 1918
& was kept in the hospital until Dec 15, 1919. His loss of blood was so great from the
several amputations that the doctors told him that two blood transfusions were the only
thing that saved his life. He was married at Westminster Md May 14, 1921 to Agnes Amy Roney,
born Oct 17, 1902 in Balto, Md daughter of Geo Joseph Roney & his wife Jean Mullen.
Have had two children both born at St Thomas Pa.
1. Charles Williams Archibald born July 2, 1922 & died July 2, 1922
2. Amy Elizabeth Archibald born Nov 29, 1924
He was about three years getting his stomach & throat cured up from being gassed.
2. Catherine Elizabeth was married Jany 19, 1918 at St Thomas Pa to Geo Guy Martin born Sept 3, 1899
at Shippensburg, Pa son of George Guy Martin & his wife Amanda Hamil. Both living next door &
he is a carpenter by trade. They have had three children born in St Thomas Tp
1. William Archibald Martin born Mch 18, 1918
2. George Harold Martin born Sept 11, 1919
3. George Guy Martin Junior born Oct 18, 1921
The Edinburgh 1789 bible gives the dates of birth of the children, ten of them,
of William & Margaret Thompson Archibald the 8th & 10th being so faint by reason
of the ink fading that they are barely decipherable. There was no place for a
family record, but this is written on the back of the last Caf [sic] of Maccabees II

living in poverty & want & of Samuel going to Carolina & of Wm & Mary & refers
to his own children & is addressed to his dear brother signed

No 5. This is an order from Provost Marshall dated Mch 18, 1865 notifying Wm Archibald
of being drafted for one year. He got as far as Fayetteville, Pa & the war closed.

7. This is paper signed by Edward Crawford Reg dated Mch 5, 1805 issuing to Wm Archibald
letters Testamentary on the will of his wife's sister Mary Thompson with will annexed
dated Dec 15, 1798 in which she gives to Wm Archibald his wife Margaret, her sister,
an undivided tract of land bequeathed to me by my father Thos Thompson adj Joseph Grimes,
Philip Houck & Wm Archibald during their lives & then to go to her children by him.
Gives them the bals of her estate.

8. I do hereby certify that Willm Thompson No 260 of Westmoreland Pennsylvania hath
voluntarily taken & subscribed the oath of Allegiance & Fidelity as directed by

11. A letter to Wm Archibald, St Thomas Pa from Mary Brown (evidently Mary Archibald
born Feby 9, 1706 [sic- should read 1786]) dated Lancaster, O June 6, 1842
addressed Dear Brother. Says they are getting on well in life & speaks of her
son Daniel & "James my youngest son is now in his 21st year"
12. a letter dated "Dunny Brenard May 23, 1800 to Dear Brother, says he is well & your
sister is well & family, they have six sons & two daughters living & 3 dead,
Hugh + Mary + Allice + James + Daniel + Thomas + David + Natl" Speaks of
hoping to have seen him long ago but cannot leave the old people in their old age.
This letter is from Ireland & speaks of a brother James, a sailor's mate in the
North of England that he hadn't seen for 5 yrs & of his uncles sons & many Archibalds
signed Daniel Archibald.
13. a letter dated Sugar Grove, O May 9, 1852 to Wm Archibald, St Thomas, Pa
Write for inf. Says has a settlement to make with the guardian of
James Brown & wants to know the amt of money that Daniel Brown rec fr you.

14. A letter dated Lancaster, Ohio Apr 21, 1841 from Mary Brown to her brother Wm Archibald
says she sends release of the land as per his proportion which she signs above explaining
that her husband Oliver died Apr 14, 1840. Directs him to send cft or ck for the money
15. Will of Wm Archibald the 1st copied in the fine handwriting of great grand uncle
Edward Crawford gives to wife Barbara full possession of the S.W. house adjg the
larger house on the east during life personal property, pasture to be provided
by my son Wm etc.
To my son William 3/4 of my plantation to include all buildings
to my daughter Martha Little's children the 1/5 of the other 1/4 of money arising from sale
to my daughter Isabella 1/5 of sd money recd fr sale of other 1/4 of farm
to my daughter Mary Brown 1/5 of sd money recd fr sale of other 1/4 of farm.

16. Chambersburg Mch 15, 1871 recd of W.V. Archibald $188.40 in trust for passing patent
on 225 A 142 P & allowance of land in St Thomas Tp originally surveyed in pursuance
of an order of survey granted. Thomas Thompson dated March 27, 1767 No 3248

20. a letter from his brother in Dinnybrewar, Ireland dated Apr 23, 1801 asks him to
send him some token as he has no remembrances of you behind but the date 1774 that
you cut on the Sycamore trees. I go often to see it. Your sister & family are all well

24. Is an old letter from Ireland dated "Carmoney May 1, 1775 & signed Robt Carson
& James Gettey speaks of several of the old family friends there.
25. A letter to Mr Archibald dated May 18, 1863 from Gailland Hartman, Clearport,
Fairfield Co, Ohio say that Mr Heft handed him a "letter from you dated Dec 28, 1850
about some turnpike stock of Polly Brown formerly Polly Heft & says that Polly Brown
is now a widow with a large family of children.
26. Receipt dated Nov 19, 1864 for $49.60 for Bounty tax fr John W. Coble collector to
James & Wm Archibald Exrs of Wm Archibald Decd.
27. Franklin Coff Personally appeared before me one of the J.P. for sd county Elizabeth Thompson
who being sworn deponent & says that the estate of Thomas Thompson decd stands indebted to
the estate of Samuel Thomson Decd £4 & that this deponent never recd it etc Dated May 2, 1796.

29. The seat numbered twenty which belongs to the Presbyterian Society in their church
near Rocky Springs is now rated at £4.12.6 per annum fr & after Nov 1, 1799 & whereas
Wm Archibald of Hamilton Tps doth now agree with the said society by their agents &
giveth his note to pay 1.10.10 for the use of part of said seat in 2 equal payts on the
first Mondays in May & Oct of each & every year therefor the said Wm Archibald is hereby
vested with a right & title to the due & orderly use of part of said seat & his part bears
the same proportion to the whole of said seat which the aforesaid yearly payt bears to the
whole annual price of the seat & to continue to him his heirs & assigns as long as he makes
the annual payment provided he conforms to the rules of the society. Done at Rocky Spring

31. Bill of Craig Nelson & Co $402 for materials furnished Wm Archibald June 18 to Dec 1, 1884
is what went in the new house (Charles B. says indicating that his father built it 42 yrs ago.
Before that, he had lived in the old log house 2d field east of old g.y. where gggf Thos Thompson
is buried beyond & to right of a fine spring that puts out there sulphur water, which is on a
slight elevation & was the Thos Thompson home. Some old foundation stones still visible mark
the site, the farm is slate land, lays nice & level & still has considerable timber on it.
The present farm of 220 A is practically all on East or south side of Lincoln highway which
runs through the farm & it is the second brick house on the right side of the road as you
come from St Thomas to Chambersburg. The original tract of 500 to 1000 A took the other side
of the road also.
32. A release fr John Little & Robert Little dated Feby 19, 1851 to William Archibald witnessed
by W.E. Miller & Calvin Bingham for all their interest in the estate of Wm Archibald 1st as
per his will, recites they are from Westnd Co & is ackd before W.E. Miller J.P. for said Co.
They are named as "Lytels" in the paper but sign "Little".
33. Bill of John Shryock, Chambersburg, Pa to Wm Archibald for funeral of Mary Thompson
dated Aug 21, 1804 viz:

34. a letter directed to William Archibald Carrelstown, Pa dated Jany 18, 1852 informs him
that his nephew Daniel Brown is no more, he died in Sept last & leaves a widow & three
children, James Brown is the last survivor of the Brown family & he not being very capable
of doing business & has to have a guardian & Daniel's last request was for me to settle
up his estate & he asks him to sell the Turnpike stock signed. Daniel Heft Admr

36. Wm Archibald was Adm of the estate of Robert Little in Feby & Mch 1808.
37. A lease from Margaret & Archibald & Elizabeth Archibald to John Wingert
dated Mch 1, 1904 leases for 1 yr their house & lot of ground & building
thereon about 3/4 of a mile east of St Thomas "on the old Jack road" bounded
by lands of David Hafer, Henry Wise & Wm Archibald.
38. Dec 23, 1863 recd of James & William Archibald $3 for grave digging Joseph Suckman.
39. In Spring 1783, then recd fifteen shillings from Samuel Thompson for services done & the
Aprizing [sic] of the goods & chattels Thomas Thompson decd Thomas Knox I say recd by me. £0.15.0
40. Recd from William Archibald £1.10.0 [unreadable word] of Thomas Thompson's estate recd by me.
