William Harvey1 Richardson was born 02 Jul 1858 in England, and died 22 Apr 1930 in Bigler, Clearfield County, PA. He married Rachel Katherine Greenaway 03 Jan 1884 in Madera, Clearfield County, PA1, daughter of Edward Greenaway and Sarah Parker. She was born 01 Mar 1867 in Woodward, PA, and died 20 Nov 1931 in Bigler, Clearfield County, PA. Notes for William Harvey Richardson: Uncertain origins. William, whom everybody called "Bill", would never talk about where he was from, or why he came to America. All he would tell anyone was that he was born in England , and that one day he just skipped town and had stowed away on a boat. His son Ben wrote me a letter before he died. He told me that he thought his father had been born in London, and he may have been the son of a sea captain. He had excellent penmanship , so he might have been educated. He believed that William had been a stowaway in order to emigrate from England. Family history tells that William may have entered through New York, but that he didn't use ordinary Immigration customs. While the ship was heading into port, Bill jumped overboard and swam to shore. William's brother in law Isaac Greenaway and Bob Kephart had been out drinking on 29 Apr 1905 , and were letting the horse guide the carriage home. But at a railroad crossing, the horse turned and began to walk down the train tracks. They were killed by a passing train, with Isaac' s head becoming severed and rolling down a hill. Family legend has it that William Richardson retrieved the head, and while holding it by the hair, washed the face off, all the while whistling. Local legend is that Isaac's ghost still haunts the spot. Bill had a handle bar mustache. Long before he died he went blind , which frustrated him as he loved to read since his retirement. On his deathbed, family tradition tells that he kept yelling "I can see you all !!!" (theses two stories were told to me in 1979 by Ruby (nee Metro) Richardson, wife of his son Henry.) The Petition of Wm. Harvey Richardson, a native of England, and now residing in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, respectfully showeth: That your petitioner arrived in the United States of America, to wit, at the port of New York, in the State of N. Y., on the 9 day of March, A. D. 1879, and at the time of his arrival he was under eighteen years of age, and that he has continued to reside in the United States since his arrival, and that for three years previous to his arrival at full age, it was, and is still, his bona fide intention to become a citizen of the United States, and of renouncing forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate or Sovereignty, and particular to the Queen of Great Britain, and that in pursuance of an Act of Congress entitled "An Act to establish a uniform rule of Naturalization, and to repeal the Acts heretofore passed on that subject," made a declaration of his intention to become a citizen of the United States conformably to the said Act, before the Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas of Clearfield county, in the State of Penna. D. 1896, and that he has resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States for five years last past, and for one year last past within the State of Pennsylvania; that he has never borne any hereditary title, or been of any of the orders of nobility in the kingdom from which he came or elsewhere. He had been ill for several months. Born near Irvona on May 6, 1888, he was a son of William and Rachel (Greenaway) Richardson. He married the former Margaret Higgins on Nov. 18, 1908.
