This is a Civil War tintype of John Whitaker. John was the second son of
Abraham and Catherine (Mattis) Whitaker of the area of Morgantown and Elverson,
PA. He joined the 88th, Company A and was mustered in in August of 1861. His 2
brothers, Henry and David Whitaker, joined on the same day. It was a Berks
County Volunteer Group.
He began in the Pennsylvania Volunteers as a Private and was a Corporal when he
mustered out in June of 1865. He served in most major battles of the the Civil
War. John was wounded in the back of the head by a musket ball at Bull Run,
August, 1862. He applied for his government pension because of his head wound.
In 1865 he married Sarah...? . They had 2 daughters, Ida R.Whitaker and
Cornelia Whitaker Thomas. John and Sarah were divorced in June 1878. John lived
the remainder of his life in West Nantmeal township, Chester County. He died 3
July 1900. He is buried in St. Mark's Episcopal Cemetery in West Nantmeal Twp.
He was survived by Henry Whitaker, Hannah Whitaker Reazor, Mary Whitaker
Cashwiler, Anna Whitaker Mardock, and his daughters, Ida and Cornelia Whitaker.
