Mrs. Winona (Murray) Antes, 87, 35 C. Sylvan Drive, Hollidaysburg, formerly
of Ebensburg, died Saturday afternoon, July 10, 1999, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Harry V. and
Grace (Calderwood) Murray. She married Eugene A. Antes May 12, 1939, in
Fourth Street Methodist Church, Altoona.
Mrs. Antes had been a bookkeeper for Commercial Bookkeeping, Altoona.
She was a member of Lakemont United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday
school and vacation bible school, served as church historian, was secretary of
the administrative board and secretary-treasurer of United Methodist Women,
formerly the Women's Society, and coordinator of mission projects. She was a
former member of the Ebensburg Methodist Church.
She was a 1928 graduate of Altoona High School.
Mrs. Antes was a charter member of the Penelec Omega Club and a former Girl
Scout troup leader in Ebensburg.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Barbara Walker of Wilmington, DE; two
sons: Vic of Kennett Square and Phil at home; two grandsons; and two
great-granddaughters.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM today and from 10 to 11 AM Tuesday at
Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg.
ANTES - Funeral services for Winona (Murray) Angeswill be held at 11 AM
Tuesday at Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg, by Pastor Elaine
Shafer-Stroud. Interment will be made at Burket Cemetery, Warrior's Mark.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM Monday and from 10 to 11 AM Tuesday
at the funeral home. She enjoyed helping others.

Mrs. M. Elizabeth Earhart, 86, Laurel Crest Rehabilitation and Special Care
Center, Ebensburg, formerly of Cresson and Loretto, died Sunday, July 11,
1999, at the center.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM
Wednesday at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson.

Clarence William Hengst Sr.
Clarence William Hengst Sr., 78, Clarence Street, Hyndman, died Sunday, July
11, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, MD.
He was born May 23, 1921, in Claysburg, the son of the late John W. and Rella
(Dively) Hengst. He married Hilda Belva Burkett. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Hengst was a member of First United Church of Christ, Hyndman, where he
was an elder, a member of the adult choir, taught adult Bible Sunday school
and served as financial secretary for the Hyndman Charge.
He retired as manager for Garland Petroleum and had previously worked as a
chemist for the Celanese Corp.
Mr. Hengst was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Hyndman
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Mr. Hengst was a member of the Cumberland Bowling Association.
Surviving are two sons: Clarence W. Jr. and John D., both of Hyndman; a
brother, J. Russell of FL; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Tuesday at Harvey H.
Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman.
HENGST - Services for Clarence William Hengst Sr. will be conducted at 11 AM
Wednesday, July 14, at the First United Church of Christ-Hyndman, Market
Street, Hyndman, with Pastor Steven L. Craft and the Rev. Ruth Kershner
officiating. Interment will be made in Hyndman Cemetery. Friends will be
received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Tuesday, July 13, at Harvey H. Zeigler
Funeral Home, Hyndman. The Fort Bedford Honor Guard will accord Mr. Hengst
full military honors.

Mrs. Marie C. (Noel) Kubat, 66, Ben Franklin Highway, Blacklick Township,
died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center,
Johnstown.
She was born September 7, 1932, in Fallentimber, the daughter of the late
Joseph and Cressie (Bender) Noel. She married Stanley J. Kubat.
Mrs. Kubat was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Nanty Glo.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years; a sister, Patricia Geary of Angola,
NY; and four brothers: Jerry and Paul, both of Coalport RD, Regis of
Fallentimber and Ronald of Ashville.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at Askew-Houser
Funeral Homes Inc., Nanty Glo.
KUBAT - A funeral Mass for Marie C. (Noel) Kubat will be held at 10 AM
Tuesday at St. Mary's Church, Nanty Glo, with Monsignor John J. Little as
celebrant. Committal will be held at Holy Name Cemetery, Ebensburg. She was
preceded in death by sisters: Mildred Harpster and Florence Cavlet; and a
brother, Donald.

made at Calvary Cemetery. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian

Mrs. Georgiana M. "Sis" Parks, 77, 1906 Broad Avenue, first floor, died
Saturday, July 10, 1999, at her daughter's residence, following an extended
illness.
She was born April 6, 1922, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Cloyd and
Evelyn (Delozier) Grant. She married Robert J. Parks March 14, 1947, in
Altoona. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Parks was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
She retired as a secretary from Blair County Day Care.
Mrs. Parks was a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School.
She enjoyed reading and crocheting.
Mrs. Parks was a member of AARP.
Surviving are a daughter, G. Kay Kennedy of Altoona; a son, Robert J. of
Apache Junction, AZ; a brother, Zen of Jacksonville, FL; four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today at The Stevens
Mortuary Inc.

Charles Louis "Smitty" Schmidhamer, 82, Beverly Healthcare-Hillview, died
Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Hillview.

Herbert L. Simpson
Herbert L. Simpson, 85, 1766 North Atherton Street, State College, formerly
of Port Matilda, died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at Centre Community Hospital,
State College, following a brief illness.
He was born September 24, 1913, in Altoona, the son of Charles and Nannie
(Neidigh) Simpson. He married Alice Martha Kelley September 24, 1947. She
died November 25, 1990.
Mr. Simpson retired from the Housing and Food Service Department of Penn
State University in 1974, had previously been employed at General
Refractories Brickyard in Port Matilda and was owner/operator of the Port
Matilda Feed Store.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the European
Theater.
Mr. Simpson was a member of the State College Lodge No. 700, Free and
Accepted Masons; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; the Port Matilda Independent
Order of Odd Fellows; the Port Matilda Lions Club; and Howard Gardner
American Legion Port, Tyrone.
Surviving are a son, John C., of State College; a sister, Marie Emigh of
State College; a brother, Leon of Port Matilda; and two grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM today and from 10 to 11 AM
Tuesday at Cox Funeral Home, Warriors Mark.
SIMPSON - Services for Herbert L. Simpson will be held at 11 AM Tuesday July
13, at Bruce E. Cox Funeral Home, Warriors Mark, with Samuel Reese
officiating. Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.

Service will be held at 8:30 PM and from 10 to the 11 AM services Tuesday at
the funeral home. Mr. Simpson was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Tyrone. He is survived by grandchildren: Julie L. Simpson of State College
and Brent A. Simpson of Centre Hall. He was preceded in death by two

Lawrence and Alice (Kirkpatrick) Volk. She married Paul Earhart. He died
June 21, 1991.
Mrs. Earhart was a member of the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel,
Loretto.
She had been employed at St. Francis College, Loretto, for 12 years.
Surviving are three daughters: Beverly Boden of Indiana, PA, Alice of Loretto
and Anita Sheehan of Ebensburg; two sons: David of Altoona and William of
Portage; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM
Wednesday at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson.
EARHART - A funeral Mass for M. Elizabeth Earhart will be held at 11 AM

deceased will be held Wednesday. She is survived by sons-in-law: Todd Boden
and William J. Sheehan; and daughters-in-law: Kathy (Basile) and Nancy
(Weakland). She was preceded in death by a grandson, Todd Boden; and five
brothers; and three sisters.

William S. "Stu" Emeigh
William S. "Stu" Emeigh, 89, 529 Third Avenue, Lakemont, died Sunday
afternoon, July 11, 1999, at the Presbyterian Home of Hollidaysburg,
following an extended illness.
He was born April 28, 1910, in McKee, the son of Warren Austin and Julia
(Benton) Emeigh. He married Kathryn Belle Funk January 30, 1946, in
Cumberland, MD. She died June 26, 1989.
Mr. Emeigh retired as a boiler-maker from Conrail in 1975, after 34 years of
service.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff Sergeant in
Company B, 2nd Battalion, 105th Infantry, in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Emeigh enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a life member of Lakemont Fire Company, the Hollidaysburg American
Legion and a member of James L. Noble Post, Altoona Veterans of Foreign
Wars. Surviving is a son, James, at home.
There will be no visitation.

EMEIGH - Services for William S. "Stu" Emeigh of 529 Third Avenue, Lakemont,
will be held at 10:30 AM Friday at Plank, Stitt, and Stevens Funeral Home,
Hollidaysburg, by the Rev. Dr. D. L. Brinton Shafer. Interment will be made
at Geeseytown Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Plank,
Stitt and Stevens Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg. He is also survived by several
nieces and nephews. The family requests that donations be made to the Blair
County Unit of the American Cancer Society, 1004 North Juniata Street,

Lawrence A. Garland, 52, Utahville, Coalport RD, died Sunday afternoon, July
11, 1999, at Philipsburg Area Hospital, following an apparent heart attack.
He was born July 23, 1946, in Aurora, ME, the son of the late Frank E. and
Mildred E. (Hamor) Garland. He married Ann M. Stephens March 18, 1988, in
Southington, CT.
Surviving are his wife; a sister, Dolores Braley of Newton, AL; and two
brothers: E. Wayne of Steuben, ME, and Frank of Newton, AL.
There will be no viewing.

Mrs. Betty L. Hammill, 80, Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care, formerly
of 109 31st Street, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at the center, following an
extended illness.
She was born March 3, 1919, in Altoona, the daughter of the late George and
Besye (McClellan) Shultzabarger. She married Glenn F. Hammill July 3, 1941,
in Cresson. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hammill retired as a cashier from Higby Company Restaurant, after 15
years of service.
She was a graduate of Altoona High School.
She loved animals.
Surviving are a son, Geoffrey D. of Manchester, MI; and a sister, Kathryn
Stere of Altoona.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM today at the Stevens Mortuary Inc.
HAMMILL - The funeral of Betty L. Hammill of Altoona Hospital Center for
Nursing Care will be held at 10 AM Wednesday at Stevens Memorial Chapel by
the Rev. Elizabeth McCloskey. Interment will be made at St. Francis Xavier
Cemetery, Cresson, PA. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM today, July

James H. Hartsock, 66, Houston, TX, formerly of Altoona, died Tuesday, July
6, 1999.
He had been employed by H. J. Gruy and Associates for 22 years.
Mr. Hartsock was a member of the Explorers Club, the Society of Petroleum
Engineers and Penn State Alumni Association.
He enjoyed traveling around the world.
Surviving are two daughters: Heather A. Cagle and Pamela M. Wiesmann; two
sons: Gregory G. and Jeffrey G.; a sister, Donna Kelly; and two grandsons.
Arrangements were made by Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, Houston.
Interment was made in Houston.

George C. Holmes, 73, Camp Hill, formerly of Greenwood, Altoona, died Sunday,
July 11, 1999, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.
He was born December 12, 1925, in Greenwood, the son of Charles C. and Emma
L. (Kelley) Holmes. He married Alice L. Dry May 12, 1951, in Washington, DC.
Mr. Holmes was a member of First Brethren Church, Washington, DC.
He retired as the founder of Holmes' Cycling and Fitness, Camp Hill, January
1, 1999.
Mr. Holmes was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Laurene L. of Camp Hill and Marsheelah
M. Preston of Enola; a son, Allen K. of Camp Hill; a sister, Gertrude Trautman
of Greenwood; and a grandson.

Mrs. Marie K. "Dot" McDonald, 80, Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg, formerly
of Sproul, died Monday morning, July 12, 1999, at the home.
She was born Jun 15, 1919, in Everett RD, the daughter of the late Harry F.
and Lucy E. (Stayer) Mock. She married Paul O. McDonald September 2, 1937,
in Hagerstown, MD. He died November 21, 1997.
Mrs. McDonald attended Claysburg United Methodist Church.
She was a graduate of Everett High School.
Surviving are a son, Gary R. of Claysburg; two grandsons; and a
great-granddaughter.

John David McKowen, 74, Altoona, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Bon
Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following a length illness.
He was born in Derry, the son of the late Clark W. and Inez McKowen.
Mr. McKowen retired from Conrail in 1988.
He was a graduate of Derry Township High School, attended the University of
Louisville, Miami University and Notre Dame Midshipman School.
Mr. McKowen was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant
aboard landing craft in the Pacific Theater and was also a veteran of the
Korean conflict, serving as a line officer on several ships.
Surviving are a sister, Geneva Bush of Derry; and three brothers: Robert of
Leola, Clark of Ligonier and James of New Martinsville, WV.

Charles Louise "Smitty" Schmidhamer, 82, Box 343, Newry, died Sunday
afternoon, July 11, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare-Hillview, following an
extended illness.
He was born January 31, 1917, in Altoona, the son of John S. and Magdeline
(Richards) Schmidhamer. He was twice married. First he married Agnes C.
Behe May 23, 1942, At St. John's Catholic Church, Lakemont. She died June 8,
1989. He then married Helen Price December 11, 1994, at the Hollidaysburg
Monastery.
Mr. Schmidhamer was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Newry.
He retired from the maintenance department of Hollidaysburg Veterans Home,
Hollidaysburg, in 1979, after 14 years of service.
Mr. Schmidhamer was a graduate of Altoona High School.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a signalman.
Mr. Schmidhamer was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a
member of Newry Lions Club and a life member of the Disabled American
Veterans.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Jean Stange of Strattanville, Judith
Pynos of Derry and Peggy of Altoona; six grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary K.

illness of leukemia.
She was born September 19, 1931, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Leo J.
and Emma B. (Whetstine) Farrell. She married Frank M. Shrom May 10, 1952, in
Altoona.
Mrs. Shrom was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, where she was
a Sunday school teacher.
She worked with her husband in the family business, Shrom Associates.
Mrs. Shrom was a 1949 graduate of Altoona High School.
She enjoyed flower arranging /gardening, painting and crafts.
Surviving are her husband; two daughters: Brenda A. Hultin of Chambersburg
and Karen S. McMichael of Lancaster; two sons: David L. of Mifflinburg and
and Stephen A. of Lancaster; four sisters: Geraldine Jenkins of Akron, OH,

William R. Smith, 78, 821 Roosevelt Avenue, Roaring Spring, died Sunday
morning, July 11, 1999, at Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona.
He was born April 29, 1921, in Roaring Spring, the son of the late William H.
and Margaret (Imler) Smith. He married Grace L. Kifer August 5, 1942, in
Roaring Spring.
Mr. Smith was a member of Bare Memorial Church of God, Roaring Spring, where
he served on the church board for many years. He was also a member of the
Crusaders Sunday school class.
He retired as a foreman in the ruling department of the Roaring Spring Blank
Book Company in July 1987, after 46 years of service.
Mr. Smith was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with Company E, 7th
Infantry, in the African and European theaters.
He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Mr. Smith was a former member of the Roaring Spring Lions Club, where he had
served as treasurer for five years.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Betty L. Carnicella of Roaring Spring; a
son, Willis R. of Pepperell, MA; a sister, Alice Furry of Roaring Spring; six
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and Calvin Cook of Roaring Spring and
Gladys (dick) Stiver of the Morrisons Cove Home, Martins burg, who were
raised in the home.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the 302nd
Airdrome Squadron.

T. and Susan (Deetor) Rudasill. She married James M. McDonald August 31,
1941, in Cumberland, MD. He died July 3, 1986.
Mrs. McDonald was a member of the First Church of Christ, Juniata Gap, where
she was a member of the choir, Sunday school class 11 for women and taught
primary Sunday school.
She was self-employed as a notary public.
Mrs. McDonald was a graduate of Altoona High School.
She was a Salvation Army volunteer, a Girl Scout leader and a member of the
Macabee Marching Band.

Dorothy J. Gibney of Hollidaysburg; a brother, James A. of York; two
granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

He was born January 24, 1913, in Altoona, the son of Florian and Mary
(Cebe'nko) Podgurski. He married Marie F. Trexler at St. Rose of Lima
Catholic Church.
Mrs. Podgurski was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.
He retired as a foreman from Excello Corp., Detroit, in 1971, following 30
years of service.
Mr. Podgurski enjoyed gardening and mechanical inventions.
He was a member of the Polish Alliance.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Virginia Ann Smolky of Savannah, GA; a
son, John J. of Southfield, MI; four sisters: Viola Fleigerbauer of Altoona,
Steffie Mielnik of Iowa City, IA, Frances Weeks of Redford, MI, and Leona
Castelluzzo of Garden City, MI; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Margaret C. Sherry, 61, Penn Run, formerly of Barnesboro, died Monday,
July 12, 1999, at Indiana Hospital.
She was born January 7, 1938, in Hastings, the daughter of the late John and
Gertrude (Holtz) Houck. She married Norman L. Sherry. He died March 25,
1998.
Mrs. Sherry was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Spangler.
She retired as a registered nurse from Miners Hospital, Spangler.
Mrs. Sherry was a member of the Indiana Nurses Association and Central
Pennsylvania Kidney Association.
Surviving are three daughters: Norma Jean and Carol, both of Penn Run, and
Lynn of Indiana, PA; a son, Robert of Ebensburg; four sisters: Mary Loud
Amadei of Ebensburg RD, Joann Risbon of Patton, Beverly Bennett of Valencia
and Karen Abrams of Hastings; a brother, John J. in SC; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Benise was a 1966 graduate of Mastbaum High School, Philadelphia.
He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam conflict.
Mr. Benise enjoyed singing, citizens band radio and shooting pool.

FL, and Tara of Hollywood, FL; a sister, Joy of Littleton, CO; a brother, Ted,

Thomas Schwarzfischer, 96, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly
of 1819 First Avenue, died Wednesday afternoon, July 14, 1999, at Bon

He was born April 22, 1903, in Roding-Bavaria, Germany, the son of the late
Joseph and Maria (Weber) Schwarzfischer. He married Cecelia Auerbeck april
24, 1937, in Altoona. She died January 15, 1970.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Mr. Schwarzfischer retired as a crane director from the Pennsylvania Railroad
in 1967, after 47 years of service.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mr. Schwarzfischer was a 75-year member of Unter Uns, former member of
Hollidaysburg Sportsmen's Club and member of the pallbearer staff at Stevens
Mortuary.
Surviving are a daughter, Leona Baranik of Altoona; three sisters: Maria
Yanker, Barbara Bayer and Theresa Hecht, all of Roding, Germany; eight
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Sollenberger was a member of Curryville Church of the Brethren, where
she was a member of the adult Sunday school class and the Mother-Daughter
Fellowship.
She was a homemaker and farm wife.
Mrs. Sollenberger was a 1933 graduate of Tyrone High School.
She enjoyed reading and attending church activities.
Mrs. Sollenberger attended the Martinsburg Senior Citizens Center.

in Detroit. He preceded her in death.

was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society.
She retired as a cook for the Moshannon Valley School District.

Carmel E. Ventura, 85, 3400 Old sixth Avenue Road, Duncansville, died Monday,
July 12, at the Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness.
She was born April 18, 1914, in Altoona, the daughter of Salvatore and
Philomeno Pirozzola. She married Luigi Ventura, who died in 1988.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary V. Paule of Duncansville; three sons: Louis D.
and John T., both of Hollidaysburg, and Joseph B. of Duncansville; two
brothers: Michael of Staten Island, NY, and Anthony J. of Altoona; and many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be no viewing.

Naomi M. Bender, 90, Loretto, formerly of Carrolltown, died Saturday, July
17, 1999, at Altoona Hospital.
She was born March 17, 1909, in Carrolltown, the daughter of the late M. J.
and Bernetta (Lieb) Farabaugh. She married B. A. Bender, Sr., in 1929. He
preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bender was a 1927 graduate of Carrolltown High School.
Surviving are two daughters: Dr. Patricia Bentivegna of Loretto and Suzanne
McDonald of McAllen, TX; a son, Bede of Alexandria, VA; six sisters:
Rosemarie Yahner of Patton RD, Coletta Kuntzman, Margaret Eckenrode, Mary
Ellen Cunningham and Mary Leora Yarko, all of Carrolltown, and Elizabeth
Stillman of Sterling, VA; a brother, Walter of Carrolltown; 11 grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Termena.

Calvin H. Noel, Jr., 74, 1263 Logan Avenue, Tyrone, died Saturday afternoon,
July 17, 1999, at Altoona Hospital.
Mr. Noel was born in Tyrone, the son of the late Calvin H. and Sophie Nettie
(Johnson) Noel, Sr. He married Annabelle Miller in Tyrone.
Mr. Noel was a member of Tyrone First English Lutheran Church.
He retired from Westvaco Corp., Tyrone, after 43 years of service.
Mr. Noel was a 1944 graduate of Tyrone High School.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater.
Mr. Noel was a member of the Tyrone Monogram Club, Anderson-Denny Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 212, Hookies
Fire Company and Tyrone Senior Citizens bowling league.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Sandra N. Watson and Jennifer N.
Hoover, both of Tyrone; a sister, Pauline Riffle of Aliquippa; two brothers:
Meryl H. of Tyrone and Kenneth L. of Bellemeade; and four grandsons.

She was born November 9, 1907, in Altoona, the daughter of Christopher and
Carrie (Paul) Oakes. She married Charles Frederick Phillips. He preceded
her in death.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Indiana. She
was a class officer for the Goodfellow Sunday school class.
She was a 1925 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and graduate of Zeth
Business School, Altoona.
Surviving is a son, Fred of Chevy Chase, MD; a sister, Eunice Dutrow of
Duncansville, and two grandchildren.

Clarence F. Roth, 92, 107 25th Avenue, formerly of 1220 22nd Avenue, died
Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital.
He was born June 18, 1907, in Wapakoneta, OH, the son of the late Daniel and
Rosa (Gress) Roth. He was married twice. He first married Amelia C. Elsass,
May 6, 1930, in Wapakoneta. She died July 21, 1986. He then married Louise
Nebgen August 2, 1989, in Altoona.
Mr. Roth was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Church.
He was co-owner of Roth tire Service, where he retired in 1970.
Surviving are a daughter, Doris Weakland of Evans City, OH; a son, Richard C.
of Sidney, OH; a sister, Viola Herier of Dayton, OH; 10 grandchildren; and 15
great-grandchildren.

Paul Woodrow Swan, 82, Box 75, Petersburg RD, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at
his son's residence following a brief illness.
He was born in Alexandraia on January 16, 1917, the son of the late Charles
W. and Sarah (Cisney) Swan. He married Luella Mae Breon December 12, 1938,
in Petersburg. She preceded him in death on March 12, 1994.
Mr. Swan retired as a custodian from the Juniata Valley School District in
1982, after more than 25 years of service.
He was a member of Petersburg United Methodist Church.
Surviving are four daughters: Margaret Bennett of Huntingdon, Marjorie A.
Kidd of Mount Union, Sarah J. Hamor of Petersburg and Tamara E. Oswalt of
Tyrone; three sons: Bill and Done E., both of Petersburg, and Timothy A. of
Alexandria; three sisters: Betty Plyer and Helen Smith, both of Chambersburg,
and Martha Everhart of Alexandria; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was born July 4, 1912, the daughter of the late Charles and Maude
(Allison) Johnson. She married Russell M. Glass November 20, 1932. He died
June 28, 1995.
Mrs. Glass was a member of Community Alliance Church in Karthaus. She also
attended Greenville Alliance Church in Greenville.
She was a secretary for the International Headquarters of the Christian
Missionary Alliance Church in New York City.
Mrs. Glass was a homemaker.
She was a graduate of Emporium High School and attended the Moody Bible
Institute in Chicago.

Greenwood, died Monday morning, July 19, 1999, at her home.
She was born December 14, 1912, in Altoona, the daughter of John and Sarah
(Swailes) Buchanan. She was twice married. First she married Elwood
Rutledge. He died in 1957. She then married Albert Mulhollen in 1962. He
died in 1974. Mrs. Mulhollen was a homemaker.
She enjoyed bingo.
Surviving are two sons: Donald E. Rutledge of Halifax, VA, and A. Richard
Rutledge of Bradley Beach, NJ; three daughters: Darlene Hite, with whom she
resided, Kaye Mowery and Diane Lake, both of Greenwood; a brother, Sheldon
Buchanan of Altoona; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Elwood, Jr.

Christine M. Palko, 77, of Division Street, Gallitzin, died Monday, July 19,
1999 at Altoona Hospital.
She was born July 24, 1921, in Gallitzin, the daughter of the late Jesus and
Carlotta (Valles) Villarreal. She married Stanley J. Palko. He died August
4, 1978.
She was a member of St. Mary's of Czestochawa Catholic Church, Gallitzin,
where she was active in the choir. She was also a member of St. Mary's and
St. Patrick's Specialty Choir and was president of the altar and rosary
society.
Mrs. Palko was a 1939 graduate of Gallitzin High School.
She was a charter member of the Gallitzin Area Alumni Association for 49
years where she held the office of vice president and director. She was also
a member of the Cresson Area Federation of Democratic Women, serving as
secretary. She was a member of Arts Alive Quilting Group, the Italian
Heritage Society, Loretto, and a member and treasurer of Gallitzin Senior
Citizens.
Surviving are a daughter, Rosemarie Kovarcik of Laurel, MD; three sons:
Thomas of Virginia Beach, VA, Stanley of Pittsburgh, and Dr. Rodger of
Gallitzin; three brothers: Robert of Chambersburg, Dr. John of Castro Valley,
CA, and Ronald of Glen Burnie, MD; two sisters: Evelyn McIntyre of Roanoke,
VA, and Dori Sockell of Norfolk, VA; 12 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

Arlene Mae Piper, 74, 1224 Rosehill Drive, died over the weekend at her
residence.
She was born August 28, 1924, in Altoona, the daughter of Elmer Ellsworth and
Elisabeth M. (Schultz) Knouse. She married William Carl Piper June 21, 1958,
in Altoona. He died March 4, 1986.
Mrs. Piper was a charter member of Faith Baptist Church. She was also a
member of the Heritage Sunday School Class.
She was the registered Director of Physical Therapy at Nason Hospital.
Mrs. Piper graduated from Altoona High School in 1943. She graduated from
the Altoona Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 and the Mayo Clinic School of
Physical Therapy in 1957.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting and needlework.
Mrs. Piper was a member of the American Sewing Guild.
Surviving are a son, William C. II, of West Trenton, NJ; a daughter, Carlene
Rae of Cuenca, Ecuador; three brothers, John E. Knouse of Pensacola, FL,
Malvin E. Knouse of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Sheldon D. Knouse of Altoona; and a
grandson.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Wednesday at Mauk & Yates
Funeral Home and from 10 AM until the time of the service today at Faith
Baptist Church.
PIPER - Services for Arlene Mae Piper, 1224 Rosehill Drive, will be held at
11 AM Thursday, at Faith Baptist Church, Altoona, with Pastor Gary Dull
officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Faith Baptist Church Building Fund. Mrs.
Piper was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Ann Weberg. She is also
survived by a grandson, Hank Daniel Piper.

Jane L. Ritchey
Jane L. Ritchey, 65, of Pittsburgh, died Saturday morning, July 10, 1999, at
her residence following an extended illness.
She was born April 1, 1934, in Altoona, the daughter of John C. and Rosetta
(Shively) Hoover. She married William Edward Ritchey September 1, 1954.
Mrs. Ritchey was a member of Juniata Church of the Brethren.
She graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1952 and attended Juniata
College.
Surviving are her husband; two daughters: Pamela Kay of San Diego and Paula
Sue of Indianapolis; a son, Mark Edward of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a sister, Kay
E. Schroll of Mechanicsburg; a brother, John C. Hoover of Palm Coast, FL; and
a granddaughter.
Arrangements were made by Copeland Funeral Home, Coraopolis.
RITCHEY - Memorial services for Jane L. Ritchey, Pittsburgh, were held July
13, 1999. Interment was made in Mt. Pleasant, PA. Also surviving are an
aunt, Flo Smith of Charlotte, NC, and a granddaughter, Shelby Taylor of
Wilbur, IN.

Louise M. Casabona
Louise M. Casabona, 69, 31 South Spinnaker Drive, Little Egg Harbor, NJ,
formerly of Altoona, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at her home.
She was born June 7, 1930, in Altoona, the daughter of Paul and Teresa
Vecchiarelli. She married Louis Casabona June 3, 1961, at Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Catholic Church in Altoona.
Mrs. Casabona was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Little Egg
Harbor and was a former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
She was employed as a medical technician at Mercy Hospital.
Mrs. Casabona was a graduate of Altoona Catholic High School.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Teresa of Queens, NY; a son, Paul of
Queens; and a brother, Oliver Tadiri of Canton, OH.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 PM Thursday at Santella Funeral Home.

Robert H. Daugherty
Robert H. Daugherty, 79, 774 South Colgate Lane, Bellmeade, died Monday
evening, July 19, 1999, at Altoona Hospital.
He was born April 5, 1920, in Altoona, the son of the late Arnold and Grace
(Mills) Daugherty. He married Mary C. Vogcik May 10, 1941, in Altoona.
Mr. Daugherty retired in 1984 from the Conrail shops in Juniata as a
blacksmith.
He was a member of the Heidelberg Country Club.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Rita M. Hawkins of Bellmeade; two
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Damien Alexander Gormont - Damian Alexander Gormont, 2 months, who died

Alex Hancherick
Alex Hancherick, 76, Twin Rocks, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Conemaugh
Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
He was born July 13, 1923, in Ehrnfeld, the son of the late Phillip and Mary
(Major) Hancherick. He married Margaret Lanzendorfer.
Mr. Hancherick was a member of Ss. Timothy and Mark's Church, Twin Rocks.
Heretired from Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co. after 38 years of service.
Mr. Hancherick was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was wounded in
action in Anzio Beach and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He was a lifelong member of Twin Rocks Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and
Local No. 488 District 2 of the United Mineworkers of America.
Surviving are his wife and two sisters: Julia Zofchak of Blairsville and Kay
Dobbs of Beaver.
Friends will be received from 1 to 9 PM Thursday at Bowser-Ondriezek Funeral
Home, Nanty Glo.
Hancherick - A funeral Mass for Alex Hancherick of Twin Rocks will be held at
10 AM Friday at Ss. Timothy and Mark's Church, Twin Rocks, with the Rev. James
H. Conrad officiating. Committal will be in the church cemetery. Friends

survived by nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be

Hancherick was preceded in death by three brothers: Sam, Joseph and John.

Betty A. Maurer
Betty A. Maurer, 80, 1400 Park Boulevard, North, Altoona, died Friday
afternoon, July 16, 1999, at Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care, after
an extended illness.
She was born May 5, 1919, in Altoona, the daughter of Carl G. and Mary Zell
(Pitcairn) Maurer.
Miss Maurer was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She retired as a sales clerk from Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Pittsburgh in
1974, after 32 years of service.
Miss Maurer graduated from Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh.
There will be no public viewing.
