AN OLD SOLDIER'S DEATH.
It Occurred at the City Hospital Yesterday Afternoon.

William Beatty, who was admitted to the hospital November 15 for
medical treatment, died at the institution yesterday afternoon at 3.40
o'clock, of congestion of the lungs.

The deceased was 59 years of age and was a shoemaker by trade. But
little is known of his early history. During the war of the rebellion
he served his country faithfully. He served two enlistments, the one
in company H, Seventh Pennsylvania Reserves, but in what other command
we have been unable to learn.

He had been married but had not lived with his wife after the close of
the war. It is said that he has one son living at Bristol, Pa., but
it is also said that he did not know where his son lived and that he
had no knowledge of him or his wife's whereabouts for many years. He
came to this city from Harrisburg in 1873 and worked for a number of
years for Mr. J. B. Smith and had worked for W. H. Glenn all the time
since 1884 with the exception of about seventeen months when he was an
inmate of the Soldiers' Home at Erie, Pa. He was at one time a member
of post 468, Grand Army of the Republic, but had allowed his
membership to lapse.

The remains were given in charge of R. K. Spicer & Co., undertakers,
to be prepared for burial and they will be interred in Fairview
cemetery this afternoon.

LOCAL BREVITIES.

The body of William Beatty, the old soldier who died at the Altoona
hospital on Friday, was laid away in Fairview cemetery on Saturday
afternoon by R. K. Spicer & Co., undertakers. Being alone in the
world his funeral was not largely attended. But three of his old
comrades in arms were present and thus paid their last respects.
Through the kindness of Rev. Samuel Blair, of the Rescue Mission, the
old soldier was given a Christian burial.
