HYNDMAN RD MAN DIES IN TRAILER FIRE

HYNDMAN - A hot coal from a small stove apparently touched off the house
trailer fire that late Tuesday evening claimed the life of Lloyd T. Griffith,
81, of Hyndman RD.
The body of Griffith was found on the davenport only a few feet from the
fire. Trailer owner John Clites said the victim, who lived in the trailer
approximately 10 years, apparently allowed a hot coal to fall from the open
stove.
The fire scene is the Clites property, approximately one-half mile north of
Hyndman along Rt. 96.
County Coroner S. Alton Barefoot, who with Bedford county Sheriff J. Wayne
Manspeaker and a state fire marshall from Hollidaysburg investigated the fire,
ruled death resulted from third degree burns.
Hyndman firemen were called to the scene but Griffith apparently was dead
before they arrived. The fire was spotted by truck driver Russell Flanagan as
he was passing the Clites property at approximately 11:50 en route to George
Transfer.
It remains uncertain whether Griffith was asleep or tending the fire in the
stove when the blaze occurred. Burns around his sleeves and the position of
his arms indicated he may have initially caught his clothing aflame.
Griffith was a retired farm laborer for some years and was receiving only
relief and social security checks. A small wad of cash was found Wednesday
morning in the debris, but it was badly burned.
The blaze was the third in two years in the trailer. The first occurred
approximately two years ago and another fire occurred last spring. Griffith
escaped injury in both the previous fires.
Clites sad both the previous fires probably resulted from Griffith's
carelessness with the stove.
Lloyd T. Griffith, of Hyndman RD 1, died March 15, 1966 at his trailer. He
was born February 13, 1885 in the Fishertown area, son of Richard M. and Sarah
Taylor Griffith. He was not married and there are no survivors.
Funeral services: Thursday, March 17, at 1 p.m. in the Ziegler Funeral Home
in Hyndman, Rev. Dwight Putnam Jr. officiating. Interment in the Stone Church
Cemetery, Fishertown.
