July 18, 1932 at age 55 of chronic nephritis. She was interred on July 21,

Lot 3 owned by Francis Park, [Agnes Spiers Park was the wife of Francis Park of
Sharpsburg. She also was born in Scotland. After her husband’s death she lived
in Wilkinsburg. She died at age 69 of cancer on February 15, 1911. She was
interred on February 18th. The inscriptions for Francis and Agnes are on one
side of the monument that features inscriptions for the Fleming family, and

owned by Francis Park, [Francis Park was born in Scotland and immigrated to the
US about 1881, along with his wife Agnes, and sons Francis Jr. and Robert and
his daughter Isabell. They lived in Sharpsburg in 1900 at #34 North Main
Street. His occupation is not clearly written. He was born in November of 1842.
He died in Sharpsburg at the age of 61 and was interred on February 24, 1904],

Parker, David H., Co D. 205 PA Vol Inf, Section 2, Range 19, Lot 9, [was
probably the son of Hugh and Regina Parker of Spring, Centre County, PA. He
appears with them as a 11 year old child, one of 5 children in the household in
1860. He joined Company C of the 125th PA Volunteers for 9 months service when
it was organized, on 11 August, 1862, when he was only 13 years old. That
company was recruited in Huntington County, next to Centre County. The
regiment was ordered to Virginia where it drilled until mid September when it
was ordered to the battle at Antietam Creek where it suffered heavy casualties.
The next month it was at the battle of Fredericksburg, then in April the next
spring at Chancellorsville. They were mustered out in May at Harrisburg.
David immediately joined the 181st Regiment, the 20th Cavalry of PA. This
company saw some small actions in the Cumberland Valley, guarded the Baltimore
and Ohio Railroad and was mustered out on 7 January 1864. In August 1864 back
in Huntington County, where his parents had moved to the town of Porter, he
once more enlisted in the 205th Regiment for a 1 year service. Held in reserve
at Washington DC, they finally met action at Petersburg in April of 1865, then
worked on repairing the South Side Railroad. The regiment remained at
Burkesville until the end of the war, and David was mustered out in June of
1865. He took up forge work, like his father back in Porter. By 1880 the
whole family was living near Pittsburgh, his parents in McKeesport and David in
O’Hara Township, near the Etna and Pittsburgh steel mills. He died in 1906], ,

Parker, Ida C., 1848 - 1912, Section 2, Range 19, Lot 9, [was the wife of
Civil War veteran David H. Parker. She first appears on the 1880 O’Hara
Township census with 2 small children, son Ira and daughter Lauretta. After
the death of David, she lived with her daughter, listed as Lucetta Le Goullon,
the wife of Edward in the town of Sharpsburg. Ida was also listed as a
maternity nurse, having given birth to 3 children, with only 1 still living.
Ida died in November of 1912 in Sharpsburg of bronchial pneumonia. She is
listed as Ida C. Stewart Parker in the interment records. The plot in
Greenwood also contains son Ira C. Parker who died in 1881 of lockjaw and a
child only identified as D. Parker who died in September of 1888], ,

Parker, Joseph Reese, Private Co B 63 PA Vol, [was born in PA around the year
1827. He married in Niles, Ohio in 1848 and just before the Civil War, he and
his wife Juliette (Julia) lived in Sharpsburg where he worked nearby as a
nailor. Even with 3 small children at home, he enlisted along with many other
friends in the Sharpsburg – Etna area with Company B of the 63rd Regiment of
the PA Volunteers. He was mustered in on 1 August 1861 as a musician and
discharged out with the regiment 5 August 1864 as a fife major. According to
his pension file, he enlisted on 5 April 1865 in Co. C of the 7th Regiment of
the PA Reserve Infantry (the 36th Volunteers) after his discharge from the
63rd. He was discharged 5 April 1866. He died in Pittsburgh in April of 1888.
His wife Julia and two of their four children are also interred in the plot,

Parker, Illegible, s/o D. H., 28 ??? 1873 - 12 May 1881, Section 2, Range 19,
Lot 9 owned by D. Parker, [This child is an unidentified son of Civil War
veteran David H. Parker. Two children show up on the 1880 census of O’Hara
Township, the first local census that David appears in after moving to the
Pittsburgh area from Huntington County, PA. This stone probably belongs to Ira
C. Parker who died in Sharpsburg in 1881 or may also represent another child,
unnamed, who was buried with Ira on November 21, 1906. Both were removed from
Section 3, Range 10 where they were buried as single interments in 1881 and

Parker, G. I., 1836 – 1891, Section 5, Range 12, Lot 1 owned by Leon Parker,
[George Irving Parker was the son of Silas Parker and Elizabeth Stevens of
Lisbon, Grafton County, New Hampshire. He lived with his wife Arseneth Snow
Parker in Lisbon along with their 2 children, Leon and Florence. He worked at
various times as a butcher, tanner and master boot and shoe maker. In 1880 he
moved to Shaler Township, although it is not known if the move was made before
or after the death of his wife, who died in1877. He died in Shaler Township on
October 28, 1891 at age 55 years, 8 months and 28 days of catarrh of the
stomach. He may have been buried in another graveyard, or was moved within
Greenwood, as his interment date was November 17th, with the year illegible in
the old lot book. The lot was purchased by his son Leon, who is also in the

Nicholas Hohn, [Sarah Jane Hohn was the daughter of Nicholas Hohn and married
William Patterson about the year 1887. Although there is a 1900 census in
Lawrenceville with 3 children listed to a couple named the same, the only child
confirmed as theirs is Charles Patterson who died in World War I. Jennie, as
she is shown on census records, died on December 26, 1940 in West Donegal
Township at age 83 of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was interred on December 29],

13 owned by Elizabeth A. Patterson, [Bernard Alexander Patterson was the only
son of George and Bessie Patterson of Sharpsburg. His World War II Draft Card
stated that he was born in Apollo, PA. He worked as a mechanic in 1917, an
electrician at a mill in 1920, and as the manager of a grocery store in 1930
when he lived in Millvale with his wife Mildred. He was interred on May 17,

Lot 13 owned by Elizabeth A Patterson, [Bessie Patterson was the wife of George
A. Patterson of Sharpsburg. Born in PA, she had only one known child, a son
named Bernard. She remained in Sharpsburg on Clifton Avenue after her husband
died. She died at age 69 in Sharpsburg of heart disease on August 14, 1940 and

Patterson, Elizabeth A., 1835 – 1913, Mother, Section 4, Range 6, Lot 13 owned
by Elizabeth A. Patterson, [Elizabeth Patterson was the wife, possibly the
second wife, of William Patterson of Sharpsburg. The only 2 children definitely
indicated for her are sons George and Frank. The 1910 census states that her
parents were born in Ohio, but in 1880 it stated that her father was born in
Ireland. Both she and her husband changed their personal data almost every
census. She died in Sharpsburg at age 77 of apoplexy just a month and a half
after her husband’s death. She died on April 18, 1913 and was interred on April

Patterson, Frank M., 1876 – 1942, Section 4, Range 6, Lot 13 owned by
Elizabeth A. Patterson, [Frank Marquies Patterson was the son of William and
Elizabeth Patterson of Sharpsburg. He was living with his brother George in
1900 in Allegheny City, working as a brakeman on the railroad. In 1910 he had
moved back in with his aging parents. He only married after the death of both
parents, and was found in Aspinwall married to wife Josephine in 1930. The
couple had 2 children. He was interred in the family plot on October 2, 1942],

Patterson, Geo. A., July 13, 1873, Mar 5, 1919, Father, Section 4, Range 6,
Lot 13 owned by Elizabeth A. Patterson, [George A. Patterson was the son of
William and Elizabeth Patterson of Sharpsburg. The 1880 census states that he
was born in Missouri, but other census records have him born in PA. He worked
as a baggage master, possibly on the railroad, and was listed as a commercial
traveler in 1910. His brother Frank lived with him and his wife Bessie in 1900
in Allegheny City. George then lived on Clifton Avenue in Sharpsburg in 1910.
He died on March 5, 1919 in Sharpsburg of tuberculosis. He was 46 years old,

Patterson, William A., 1833 – 1913, Father, Section 4, Range 6, Lot 13 owned
by Elizabeth A. Patterson, [William Patterson was a blacksmith from Sharpsburg,
possibly connected to one of the local mills. His place of birth varies in
different census records, from Missouri to PA to Ohio. A William Patterson
appears in Sharpsburg in 1860, married to wife Eliza with 2 children. In 1870
the children are not the same, except for one son. In 1880 the list is entirely
different again, with younger children. It is possible that he married twice,
with both wives named Elizabeth – in fact the 1910 census has him married
twice. He died in Sharpsburg at age 79 of dysentery on February 2, 1913. He was

Patterson, John, 1879 - 1883, Section 3, Range 5, Lots 15 & 17, [John
Patterson was the youngest known child of Samuel and Margaret Patterson. He was
probably born in O’Hara Township in 1879. He died in 1883 and was interred in a
cemetery in Harmarville. He was 3 years and 5 months old. His remains were
moved to Greenwood on March 21, 1893 and he was the first interment in the new
family plot. No cause of death is written in Greenwood records], , (contributed

Patterson, Margaret, 1832 - 1913, Section 3, Range 5, Lots 15 & 17 owned by S.
Patterson, [Margaret Patterson was the Scottish wife of Samuel Patterson of
O’Hara Township. She raised at least 8 children: William, Mary, Sarah, James,
Robert, Samuel, Margaret and John. She and Samuel lived in Indiana Township in
1870, in O’Hara Township in 1880, and in Sharpsburg in 1900 on 23rd Street.
While in Sharpsburg, she and Samuel had 3 children in the household plus their
daughter Mary and her husband Isaac Higgins and grandson Samuel. Margaret died
on October 30, 1913 in Pittsburgh at age 80 of typhoid fever. She was laid to

Patterson, [Samuel Patterson was a Scottish immigrant who settled in Indiana
Township with wife Margaret, also a Scottish immigrant. They had at least 8
children. Samuel was a farmer who later sold agricultural equipment in 1900. He
died in Sharpsburg at age 76. He was interred on August 10, 1907], ,

Patterson, Sarah, 1869 - 1949, Aunt, Section 3, Range 5, Lots 15 & 17 owned by
S. Patterson, [Sarah Patterson was the daughter of Samuel and Margaret
Patterson of O’Hara Township. In the 1880 census she was 16 years old, with a
brother, William, age 19 and her sister Mary, age 17, older that her in the
list of children. The 1900 census of Sharpsburg has her birth date listed as
June of 1870. She apparently never married. She was buried on March 19, 1949],

Patterson, John Galbraith, (plot marker), 1818 – 1878, Section 2, Range 13,
Lot 1 owned by J W Patterson, [John Patterson was born in Indiana Township
according to Greenwood interment records. At that time, there were 2 Patterson
families in the area headed by Alexander Patterson and James Patterson. Census
records indicate that both households had young sons in the home in 1820. In
1850 John was married and working as a pilot (perhaps riverboats ?) while he
and his wife and young daughter Martha Matilda lived in McKeesport. In 1860
they lived in Elizabeth Township with 5 children and he was still a pilot. In
1870 they were in Lincoln Township with 8 children and he is listed as a
laborer. He was buried in the Sharpsburg Presbyterian graveyard at age 60 when
he died of typhoid fever. His remains were moved to Greenwood on April 21,

1 owned by J W Patterson, [Sarah Ann Patterson was born in Greensboro, Ohio and
became the wife of John Patterson. Her children included Matilda, Nancy,
Nicholas, John James, Harry, Daniel and Charles. After her husband death she
continued to live in Sharpsburg with her children. Most of the boys worked in
the local glass house. She died in Sharpsburg at age 72 of cancer, and was

Although Ralph never appeared on a census record, John and Ella are in

wife Susan were newly married and had no children at that time. James was
working as a clerk in a store. In 1880 the couple had 5 children ranging from 1
to 9 years old. By 1900 they were living in Aspinwall and had 8 children, but
are noted as having lost one of them. James was a salesman for groceries. He
died in Aspinwall at age 64 of cancer of the stomach. He was interred on April

family. After her husband’s death in 1907, she continued to live in Aspinwall
with her children She died there on April 8, 1917 at age 67 years, 7 months and

she was living with her husband Howard Pearson in Blawnox. They had been
married for 3 years, and Howard was a salesman of wholesale concrete. She was
interred in the family plot on June 7, 1954. Her husband was interred on May 8,

the Peebles family, but the 1850 Pine Township census has Lemuel Peebles are
the son of William Peebles and his wife Caroline. Lemuel was age 4 when his
farmer father shows up with him and a daughter Clara A. Also in the home is an
Ellen Peebles, born in Ireland, and only 8 years of age. A gap in records
occurs, and the 1880 census of McCandless Township has Lemuel and his wife
Maggie with 2 children, Hervey and Lemuel. No other records are easily found
for him. He died in DeHaven PA at age 63 and was interred on June 24, 1905], ,

census, along with their 3 daughters, Amelia, Susanna and Anna. After William
was born the family lived in East Deer Township for a while, but had moved back
to Sharpsburg by 1880 where they lived on Penn Street with 6 children, William
being the oldest in the house. By 1880 he was married and working as a
carpenter. He and his wife Annie had 4 children. In 1910 William was living at
#1730 South Canal Street while Annie and her children were at #1728. In 1930 he

couple married about 1886 and had their first child, Mabel, in July of 1887.
Annie also had Edward in April of 1889, Albert in February 1893, William in
March of 1897 and Merle in 1907. In 1910 Annie was living at #1728 Canal Street
with her 5 children while William was living 3 doors away. Annie died in
Sharpsburg on October 23, 1928 at age 67 of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was

Pfusch, William, 1829 – 1909, Father, Section 5, Range 9, Lot 6 owned by
William Pfusch, [Wilhelm (William) Pfusch was born in Germany and immigrated
before 1853 when he was naturalized in Pittsburgh. According to several family
researchers he was married twice. His first wife has been identified as Anna
Martha Brill, the daughter of John Brill and Anna Katherine Seeger. However,
the records of the Etna Congregational church indicate that he married Anna
Gertrude Siebert on September 7, 1854 in Etna. After her death, he married Anna
Martha Brill Kinsch on November 20, 1864 in Etna at the same church. Anna
Martha died in 1866 after having 4 children. He then appears to have married
Elizabeth Reibein and had 7 more children. He died in Sharpsburg on May 18,
1909 and was buried probably in the Etna graveyard. His interment in Greenwood
is dated July 25, 1909, so he apparently was removed from Etna although
Greenwood records do not indicate this. There is some confusion between
researchers about his marriages. This needs more research], , (contributed by

Vincennes Street in Pittsburgh’s 5th Ward in 1930. He worked as a tailor in a
shop at that time. He died in South Fayette Township on June 27, 1932 at age 34
of pulmonary tuberculosis. He was interred on July 1, 1932], Section 9, Row 12,

Piel, Henry D., Nov 7, 1871, Jan 23, 1937, Born Vincennes, Ind., [Charles
Henry D. Piel was the son of John H. Piel and his wife Mary. John was a
carpenter who lived in Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana with wife and 5 children
– Mary, Charles, Herman, George and Edward. Henry married Eleanora Wahl in 1896
and lived in Allegheny City in 1900 with their children Dorothy and Henry. By
1910 the family lived in Sharpsburg, although little Henry apparently died
there due to an accident and was interred in the family plot on March 29, 1910.
Just a few days earlier, on March 24th, his sister Mildred had been interred,
dying at age 3 years and 10 months of broncho pneumonia. Henry D and wife Nora
lived on 14th Street with Dorothy, now 12, and Sarah, age 1 year and 9 months.
He worked as an employment agent. In 1920 they lived in Aspinwall and he was a
foreman in a foundry. Sarah Wahl, his mother-in-law also lived within the home.
By 1930 he and Nora were still living at 205 Virginia Avenue, and he was a
commercial traveler for the gas and oil industry. He died in Pittsburgh on
January 23, 1937 at age 65 of chronic myocarditis. He was interred on January

immigrated to America in 1847. He enlisted in the 35th PA Infantry at an
unknown date, as he is not listed in Bates under that unit. In Roach’s Mills,
Virginia, the regiment was renumbered the 74th. His pension record indicates
he served in both Company F and company G. He was promoted to full corporal in
June of 1864. He enlisted on 16 February 1865 in Company E of the 78th PA
Infantry and served until muster out on 11 September 1865 at Nashville,
Tennessee. In 1880 he and wife Savina had 3 children in Sharpsburg, where he
ran an inn. His listing in the 1890 Vet Schedule notes he still suffered
effects from sun stroke received in the line of duty. He died in 1901 in
Sharpsburg, suffering the effects of rheumatism], , (contributed by Diane

Range 10, Lot 7, [was the wife of Civil War veteran Frederick C. Pilgram. A
long-time resident of Sharpsburg, she had 6 children who all lived beyond
infancy. After her husband’s death, she continued to live in Sharpsburg as her
children married and moved off. Her last census listing is 1920 where Savina
lived at 311 South Main Street in Sharpsburg with 3 of her children, Amelia,
Robert and Martin. She died in 1922 at age 75 of lobar pneumonia], ,

family until the 1920s, working as a laborer in various businesses, including
the Pennsylvania Railroad. He lived alone in 1930, but in 1942 his sister
Amelia was living with him at 309 Main Street, Sharpsburg. His poor health
apparently did not allow him to work at the time. He died in October of the

Pohlot was a mill worker who was born in Austria and immigrated to the US
before 1900. He and his wife Anna lived in Etna and had no children. When he
died on October 2, 1930, he was living at #174 Butler Street in Etna. He died
of cancer of the pancreas, and was buried from the Holzheimer & Bock Funeral
Home in Sharpsburg. The funeral bill was paid for by Mrs. Anna Pohlot],

near the Polish border, with the name appearing on his World War I draft card
as “Szepeo Oraczi”, which may be dreadfully misspelled. The town of Raczki is a
likely location, a place south of the city of Elblag, and northwest of the
German city of Berlin. The draft card was filled out in Johnstown PA, as he was
living at #316 Broad Street there. He worked as a butcher for Samuel Pollack in
Johnstown. It is possible that he once lived in Chicago, as a boy by that name
appears there in 1900 with parents John and Amelia. Sisters Stephania and
Wladyslawa also were in the home. He died in Pittsburgh at age 55 of lobar

was a time clerk in a box factory. He died of cancer at age 53 in South Fayette

# 4 west, [Mabel Rose Hetrick was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hetrick of
Hawthorne, Clarion County PA and appeared on the 1910 census there as a married
woman living with her parents. Also in the household were a brother and sister,
a niece, as well as a 10 month old daughter, Almeda. By 1920 she and husband
John were in Pittsburgh’s 24th Ward. The couple had 3 children, although Almeda
was not among them. In 1930, also in Ward 24, the couple had 4 children. She
died on March 14, 1934 in Pittsburgh at age 47, suffering from acute rheumatic

9th Ward. Born in Ireland, he appeared as a 21 year old son of the couple on
the 1850 census, along with a younger sister Sarah, who was born in PA. In 1860
he was farming in Indiana Twp, married to wife Susanna, with 3 children. His
father and mother were also in the house. The family stayed in Indiana Township
through the 1870 and 1880 census. Hugh died there at age 65 of enlargement of

Pollock, James Pollock was the son of Hugh and Susan Pollock. When his father
died in 1893, Susan moved to Sharpsburg with her daughters, but James elected
to stay behind and remain a farmer. From the 1900 census to 1930, he was
indexed as a single man, working on a farm, although by 1930 he had retired
from active farming. He died in Indiana Twp. On December 19, 1931 at age 76 of

Pollock, [Jennie W. Pollock was the daughter of Hugh and Susan Pollock of
Indiana Twp. She appears on the 1870 and 1880 census with the rest of the
family. After the death of her father, she moved to Sharpsburg with her mother
and sister Clara. She is listed in the 1900 census as a school teacher. She
died in Allegheny City at age 43 of a primary perforation of the intestines.

husband in 1893, she moved to #1618 Middle Street in Sharpsburg with 2 of her
daughters, Jennie and Clara. She died there on November 5, 1909 at age 80 of

Pope, Catherine, 1868 – 1898, [Catherine Ferber was the eldest child of George
John Ferber and Elizabetha Roesch. She was born in Hampton Twp on April 16,
1868. The family lived on a rented farm in the township until 1892 when George
bought a farm in O’Hara Township. She married Harry John Pope on April 25, 1889
at the Etna Congregational Church. She had 3 children, Harry, born in 1890,
Nelson, born in 1893 and Helen, born in 1896. She died of unknown causes on
August 4, 1898 and was interred in the Etna Cemetery. Her husband stayed in
Etna with his 2 sons, but Helen lived with her Ferber grandparents in O’Hara
after her mother’s death. Harry married a second time and lived in Etna for
some time, but died in Los Angeles. In October of 1945 Albert Ferber,
Catherine’s nephew, moved several family members to Greenwood, including
Catherine, her sister Minnie and her parents], Section 2, Range 2, Lot 1 owned

according to some family researchers. If this is correct, she may have been the
daughter of John and Dorothea Strohm of Indiana Township. She may have been
Jacob Port’s second wife, as Eliza Strohm is listed with her parents in 1880
and Jacob is listed in Millvale with wife Mary. Whatever her origin, in 1900
she was married to Jacob and listed with 5 children in Indiana Township,
Violet, Wesley, Elsie, Jessie and Helen. She died in Indiana Township on May
16, 1929 at age 70, a victim of lobar pneumonia. She was interred in Greenwood
next to her husband on May 18. Also in the plot is her son Weston, and

Mary were in Millvale and he was working in a “rope walk”. His mother and
sisters were next door. After that year his wife was always named as Eliza, and
researchers believe her to be Elizabeth Strohm. They had 5 children and they
lived in Indiana Township, where Jacob described himself as a laborer until
1920 when he added his work on township roads. He died in Indiana Township on
July 16, 1921 at age 68 years, 5 months and 28 days of angina pectoris. He was

to at least 10 children in all. Although she had a full life on the farm, by
1860 there was a note on the Indiana Township census that she was insane. The
1880 census does not list her as insane, but she died shortly after. The
interment information at Greenwood does not even list her by name and gives no

shown with the family, names Sophia and it is possible that this was her common
name within the family. She died in August of 1887 and was interred in

the death of his parents, he continued to live in O’Hara Twp. with the family
of his brother Philip and worked as a farm laborer. Then he moved in with his
married sister Emma and her husband Frank Strana in 1910. They lived at #1480
High Street in the 24th Ward of Pittsburgh. He had become a driver for a

Frederic W. Prager, [Johann Georg Conrad Prager was the son of German
immigrants Johannes Prager and Anna Barbara Wildt, who were natives of
Forrenbach, Germany. The family immigrated to the US in the 1840s. After the
death of his father and mother, he and brother Leonard lived with their brother
John’s family in Indiana Township in 1860 and worked on his farm as field
hands. Conrad married Margaretha Stamm, the daughter of Swiss immigrants, and
had at least 6 children. He worked as a carpenter, living in Hoboken, which
later became the town of Blawnox. He died in Hoboken in May of 1898 and was the
first interment in the family plot in Greenwood, owned by his son], ,

Conrad Prager of Indiana Township and Hoboken. She was born in April of 1850 in
Switzerland, in Canton Schaffhousen, in the village of Schleitheim. The 1900
census gives her date of immigration as 1865. She and Conrad married shortly
before the 1870 census was taken, as they appear with no children. They lived
near Conrad’s brother John. Margaretha had at least 6 children, Wilhelm,
Louisa, Annie, Lizzie, Millie and John H. After the death of Conrad in 1898,
she appears in the Hoboken census with her youngest 3 children. She died in
April of 1928 of valvular heart disease at age 78], , (contributed by Diane

records, his immigration from Farrenbach, Baiern, Germany was noted on both the
Hamburg and New York Passenger Lists. He sailed on the “Gellert” on May 9, 1877
and arrived in New York on May 23, with 4 younger siblings, Kunigunde, Johann,
Margaret and Conrad. He was only 14 years old when he was put in charge of his
brothers and sisters. He was living in Aspinwall in 1910 with wife Mary Aupke
and 4 children, Ella, Bertha, Norman and Arthur. He described his job as a
wagon maker for automobiles. He died in Aspinwall at age 51 on December 5,
1913, suffereing from pachtnemengitis and was interred on December 8, 1913.

1870 Philip appeared in the list of children, at age 5. He married Emma Seibert
about 1896 and raised 5 children: Lena, John, Ruth, Fred and Helen. Another
child, Roy died as an infant. In 1900 he was still trying to make a living as a
farmer, but his location, along Kittanning Pike, had little space and soil for
prosperous farming, and he turned to the local towns for employment. In 1910 he
worked in the enamel works, in 1920 a pipe mill, and in 1930 a steel
construction company. He died at home of a gun shot wound of the abdomen on

Martha Hillas, [Martha was first located in 1910 in Pittsburgh’s 4th Ward,
living at #122 Moultree Street, the address when she purchased the family plot
in Greenwood. She was listed under the name Martha Wisser, a 38 years of
“sister” of Harvey Murray. She was working as a housekeeper, had been married
once for 15 years and had no children. In 1920 she and Harvey were on Shanham
Avenue in Ward 19, living with a boarder while Harvey worked as a laborer in a
copper works. She was 47 and listed as divorced. Her death occurred in
Pittsburgh on December 1, 1922 at age 50. The cause of death was listed as

Radke, Henry J., Husband of Mathilda nee Buehler, 1888 – 1925, Section 5,
Range 10, Lot 20 owned by Henry Buehler, [Henry was born in Ohio and after his
marriage to Mathilda Buehler, daughter of Henry and Mary Buehler of O’Hara
Township, the couple lived near Cleveland in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They appear
on the 1920 census and Henry is identified as a house carpenter. Greenwood
records state that he died in O’Hara on November 23, 1925 at age 36. His cause
of death was a fall from a scaffold, and he list listed as a soldier. However,
the listing for Ohio deaths for the year also has Henry dying in Cuyahoga
County on that date. This is probably correct and the Greenwood records was
filled out with O’Hara mistakenly given since the Buehler family resided there.

James Ramsey, [Margaret E. Ramsey was the wife of James Ramsey of Sharpsburg.
She was born in Ireland and immigrated in the 1870s, although it is not known
if she was married at the time of immigration. She appears in the 1880
Sharpsburg census as a widow with 3 children, John, Mary E. and James C. In
1910 she was living in Ward 23 of Pittsburgh at # 814 Church Avenue with her
daughter Mary. She claimed to have borne 4 children, and 3 were living. Her
immigration date was given as 1872, and she was taking in lodgers for income.
In 1920 she lived with her daughter Mary after her marriage to Philip J.
Schusler, a dentist, in Franklin, Venango County. She died there on October 13,
1930 and was interred 3 days later, according to Greenwood records. She was 79
years of age and suffered from acute gastro enteritis. The tombstone gives her

John Reddinger on January 17, 1893. John Reddinger and family appears in the
1900 census of O’Hara Township and the 1910 census of Sharpsburg. Their only
child was a son named Harry, born in July of 1894. She died in Sharpsburg on
July 28, 1915 at age 42 years, 4 months and 15 days of valvular heart disease,
and was interred on July 30, 1915. It is unknown how she may be related to the

census, and both he and his wife Nancy, and daughter Estella died in the 1890s,

Reese, William, May 25, 1821, May 26, 1889, Section 4, Range 5, Lot 17 owned
by Sarah A. Reese, [William Reese was born in PA to William Reese of Lidney,
England and Jane Eichborn Trunick of Allegheny County. By 1850 he was a 28 year
old married man, living in Shaler Township and farming. In his house were wife
Sarah and 2 young children, as well as his mother-in-law, Ann Powers, and a
young brother-in-law, Thomas Powers. He continued to farm as his family grew,
but by 1870 he was a nailer. When he died, he was buried in Pine Creek
Cemetery. He was removed to Greenwood on November 12, 1891 along with 2 sons,
Walter S, and Joseph W. Also removed to the family plot in Greenwood were his
wife’s parents, Benjamin Powers and his wife Ann Crawford Powers. Walter Reese
died at age 26, about the year 1884. Joseph Reese died at age 16, about the
year 1881. Benjamin Powers died in Etna at age 53 and his wife Ann died at age

mother. She immigrated to the US in 1885. Her husband was listed as 15 years
younger than she, and worked as a shipper. No other census of her has been
found, however, in the Greenwood records she is listed as Emma Remensnyder. A
woman by that name appears in 1910 with the Louis Osward family in the 24th
Ward of Pittsburgh, as a widowed sister-in-law born in Germany. No connection
has yet been found to the Cricks family, in whose lot she is buried, so the
identity of this person remains uncertain. She died in Etna on May 25, 1923 at

Reynolds, Cuyler L., 1899 - 1932, Father, [The 1930 Pittsburgh census showed a
Cuyler Reynold who was born in Georgia. With that lead, a 1900 census was found
of Screven Georgia (Militia District 259). Cuyler and didter Olivia were part
of the extended family of Michael Gant and wife Winnie. Besides a daughter,
Susan, several grandchildren were living with the couple, including Cuyler.
Most of them worked as day laborers on a farm. The 1930 Cuyler had a wife,
Aggie, and 5 children, ranging from 5 month old Clementine to 11 year old
Thelma. Cuyler worked as a delivery man for a grocery store. He died in
Pittsburgh on August 3, 1932 at age 43 of acute myocarditis. He was interred on

Kittanning Road, near Etna and Frank as a 2 year old child. He died in Shaler
Township on December 23, 1912 at age 5 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was the
victim of complications of measles, asthma and bronchitis. His interment was on

Rhein, owner of this plot. They were both the sons of Christian and Charlotte
Rhein, German immigrants who arrived early in the 1840s, with Christian serving
in the Civil War. In the 1880 census of Allegheny City, Lewis was 17 and
Charles was only 5. Little is known about Lewis and it is possible that he
spent time out of state as an adult. His son George died in Middlesex Township
of Butler County PA on March 7, 1925. He was only 16, but died of acute cardiac

Charles may have been born in Shaler Township, and appears on the 1880 Etna
census as a 4 year old in a family of 7 children. In 1900 his family lived in
Sharpsburg and Charles was a driver, like his father. After the death of his
father, Charles headed the house with his widowed mother and 2 younger sisters,
Margaret and Mabel. He was a laborer in a lumber yard in 1910 and 1920. He died

Rhine, [Joanna (Johanna) H. Rhine was the wife of William B. Rhine of Etna and
Sharpsburg. Married around the year 1858, she had at least 11 children and had
lost 5 of them by 1900. She stated on the 1920 census that she had been born in
Prussia and immigrated in 1853. Her husband was born in PA. Using census
records to reconstruct the family, the following children can be included:
Francis (1962), Mathew (1965), Jennie (1968), Liza (1870), Fredrick (1873),
Charles (1877), William (1878), Margaret (1881), Caroline (1883) and Mabel
(1887) and Bridget Ann (1888). Joanna died in Sharpsburg on May 14, 1922 at age
79 of cancer, and was interred 3 days later. Also in the family plot, but
without tombstones are son Matthew Rhine who died in an accident in 1893, and
an unidentified M. K. Rhine who died in Sharpsburg at age 56 in June of 1894],

In 1910, after the death of her father, she was living at #20 First Street in
Sharpsburg with her mother, her sister Margaret and her brother Charles. She

on the 1880 Sharpsburg census, with daughter Annie M. at age 23, a telegrapher.
There is no census record of William E. Richey in the local area, so she may
have only been married for a short time before her death. No cause of death is
listed. There is also a Jeanette Richey buried in the plot who died in December
of 1891 at age 5 of diphtheria. The child died in Blairsville, PA, and may have

Riethmiller, Marie Henrich Schaefer, (no photo available), Section 6, Range
6, Lot 4 owned by Heinrich Henrich, [She was the older sister of Henry Henrich,
born to Christian Henrich and Maria Schilling on December 4, 1834 in Hainchen.
She married Johannes Schaefer in Hainchen on March 22, 1856. The couple had a
son, Adam, in 1855 (before the marriage) and a daughter Marie in 1857. In 1858
Johannes sailed to America, never to be heard of again. Marie and her children
immigrated in 1867 on the ship “Jupiter”. She lived with her brother Henry in
1870 and took care of her children and her brothers’ children for years. She
eventually married Conrad Riethmiller, whose wife and child were killed in the
storm at Ross Grove, O’Hara Township on July 4, 1878. Conrad and Marie can be
found on the 1900 census of Sharpsburg, living on Kirk Alley near 15th Street
with Chris Schuster, her brother-in-law. She died on July 19, 1919 of arterio
sclerosis at #212 15th Street. Her burial is noted in the Greenwood lot book,

Riethmiller, Elisabeth Ursula, Section 6, Range 6, Lot 4 owned by Heinrich
Henrich, [The stone lies on the ground next to the stone of Henry Henrich. Her
name does not appear in the interment list, nor can easily be found in any of
the entries of the Lot Book. Ursula was the first wife of Conrad Riethmiller.
Descendants believe that she was born in Switzerland in 1835, and she and
Conrad had 9 children. Ursula and her 15 month old son, William, were both
killed by a falling tree during the storm at Ross Grove when a tree fell on the
Riethmiller wagon in July 4, 1878. While others of the dead were removed to
their family homes for mourning, Ursula and William were reportedly taken
directly by Joseph Holzheimer to his undertaker building because so many of the
Riethmiller family members had been injured during the storm. With hearses
provided by Mr. Holzheimer, all of the dead (7 total) were buried in the
graveyard of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sharpsburg on the Lower
Road in O’Hara Township, just outside of Sharpsburg on the day after the storm.
Ursula and son William were in the same casket. It is possible that with the
connection of his sister to the widower Conrad Riethmiller, Henry Henrich
provided space in his Greenwood plot for Conrad’s first wife], , (contributed

Township on July 4, 1878. He appears as a 12 year old boy in the 1870 census
and a 23 year old in the 1880 census. In 1880 he was working as a clerk in his
father’s grocery store in Sharpsburg. He apparently married shortly after that
census, and family researchers have given the name Elizabeth Wagner as his
wife. He died in November of 1897 at age 40 of “congestion of the liver” and

to Frederick Ringle and his wife Catharine (or Caroline) Geltzer. When he was 6
years old, the family immigrated on the ship “P Caland”, leaving Rotterdam and
arriving in New York. He, his parents and 2 brothers rode in steerage
throughout the voyage. Louis married Cora Ritter in 1898 and had 2 daughters,
Loretta and Esther. Census records show him in Sharpsburg as a laborer at a
steel mill, but his death certificate showed he was a retired patrolman when he
died. Louis died in Sharpsburg on April 8, 1924 at age 49 of apoplexy. He was
interred on April 10. Also in the plot are his parents, Fred and Caroline, his

furnace, living with wife Louise and 6 children. He died in Etna at age 62 from
an accident which resulted in a broken neck. He was buried in Section 6 owned
by the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sharpsburg on August 4, 1907. He

Roach, Edward H., Co H 193 PA Vol., d. 20 Jan 1905, Section 4, Range 3, Lot
13, [was born in England, the son of William G. Roach and his wife Mary. His
family immigrated to this country early in the 1860s and he joined Company H.
of the 193rd Regiment of the PA Volunteers on 19 July 1864 in Pittsburgh for
100 days service. The regiment was attached to the 8th Corps and moved to
Baltimore. They were assigned to guard duty on the bridges of the
Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad. Edward was mustered out at
Pittsburgh on 19 November 1864. He has been tremendously hard to find in
census records, but the Pittsburgh and Allegheny Directory for 1877 and 1878
places him in Sharpsburg on Main Street, near his brother Robert and other
family members. He died at age 61 of chronic catarrh of the stomach. He was a
carpenter and may never have married. His tombstone seems to give January 20th
as his date of death, but that was the date of internment], , (contributed by

Roach, Mary Ann, 1813 - 1896, Mother, Section 4, Range 3, Lot 13, [was the
mother of Edward H. Roach, the Civil War veteran. She was the wife of Reverend
William Gundry Roach and like him, was born in England. She is listed in the
1880 Sharpsburg census, 17 years younger than her husband, with 5 children left
at home. At least 3 older children also came to America with the family and
lived in the Sharpsburg area. She purchased the lot in Greenwood when her
husband died, then buried her son Robert in 1896 before entering the plot

Roach, Rev. Wm. Gundry, 1795 - 1881, Father, Section 4, Range 3, Lot 13, [was
born in England in 1795. Although an immigration has not been found for him
and his family, his son George gave 1862 as an immigration date. He was 85
years old when he died in Sharpsburg on 20 March 1881], , (contributed by Diane

Roberts, Eli, Section 2, Range 7, Lot 1 owned by Eli Roberts, [Eli Roberts may
have been born in Virginia, but it was a common enough name to be very hard to
trace. His pension index shows he was in Co. I of the 2nd West Virginia Veteran
Infantry and gives his wife’s name as Fannie. He had applied for a pension in
January of 1900, but died in May of the same year. Eli died in Holland,
Michigan of peritonitis at age 52. But which unit he was in before the 2nd W.
Va. is unknown. It is not on the pension index, and there are 3 registered
regiments with an Eli Roberts, one cavalry and 2 infantry. He appears in O’Hara
Township in 1880 with Fannie and 3 children, Emma, age 9, Frederick, age 6, and
Annie, age 5. In 1900, Fannie was in Sharpsburg with Anna, now listed as 23
years old, Cora, age 18, Wayne, age 10, and Bessie, age 6. The census lists her
as giving birth to 10 children, with only 5 living. The family plot includes
the burials of the children Aaron who died at age 5 months in 1886, Jesse who
also died at age 5 months 13 days after Aaron, and an infant Roberts who died
in 1890. Son Frederic died in Sharpsburg in 1899 at age 26. Daughter Emma
Milbert died in Sharpsburg at age 46, her body crushed when it was struck by a
shifting engine, presumably a railroad engine. Daughter Anna Ault died in
Rochester, PA at age 40 of cancer. The son of Eli’s daughter Cora, Thomas
Bauer, is also in the plot, having died in Sharpsburg at age 1 of pneumonia.
There is no tombstone for any family member in this lot. It is located next to
the Keil “square” and directly across from the Soldier’s monument.], ,

removed from the graveyard of the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church, along with
two bodies. The one interment was only identified as Robins. The removal was
performed on March 14, 1884. No other information was given in the interment
records. There are some very faint and worn letters that can be seen. A closer

Township in 1850 with their 4 children. James, at age 25, worked the family
farm. In 1860 he was married to wife Mary and they had 3 children. By 1880 the
family lived in Sharpsburg with 7 children and James was working as a coal
merchant. He died in Sharpsburg at age 74 of general debility. He was interred

Robinson of Indiana Township and Sharpsburg. She was a 13 year old child named
Kate on the 1880 census of Sharpsburg. As an adult, she remained single and
lived with her younger sister Frances, who married Edward Barton McRoberts.
They lived in Sharpsburg on Main Street, and Rachel worked as a school teacher.
She inspired 2 of Frances’ daughters to also be teachers. She was interred in

as one of 15 children. He returned to the farm to help his widowed mother after
the war., but by 1930 lived in Pittsburgh and worked at a steel mill. His wife,
Minnie, and he had at least 5 children, Roderick, Edith, Rebecca, Dorothy and
David. He died in O’Hara Township on August 12th, according to Greenwood
records. He was 43 years of age and died of encephalitis. He was interred on

Dennis Gross, [George Roessler was the son of George and Elizabeth Roessler of
Pittsburgh’s 14th Ward. He was born in November of 1880. His parents also had
sons Walter, Louis and Howard, as well as a daughter, Annie. While George Sr.
was a roller in the mills, young George went from a message receiver for a
telegraph to working with an electrical works. He married Nellie Gross about
1908. He died on December 18, 1919 in Mifflin Township at age 39 of uremia.
After his death, his younger brother Howard lived with and helped his widow

Street with her 2 children, George, age 16 and Erma, age 17. Also in the home

born on June 10, 1896 in Pittsburgh. It states that his father was born in
Virginia. He died in South Fayette Township at age 31 of chronic nephritis and
was interred on September 11, 1927 in Greenwood’s section 1. There is no record

1920 he lived in Hoboken (Blawnox) and worked at the Allegheny County Workhouse
as a driver. He died in Blawnox at age 67 of a coronary occlusion. He was

Rorison, [William Rorison was born in Ireland in August of 1827 and immigrated
around 1848. In 1870 he was living in Indiana Township and working in a rolling
mill. He and his wife had 6 children. In 1880 the family lived in Pittsburgh
and the Pittsburgh Directories showed him at #41 13th Street. By 1900 he was in
Fawn Township and was a farmer. He died in Fawn Twp at age 76 of dropsy and was

[Nancy Rorison was the wife of William Rorison and was also born in Ireland.
The 1900 census indicates that she immigrated around 1850. She had at least 6
children, Ann, Benjamin, John David, Ross and William. In the 1870 Indiana
Township census, she is named as Agnes. Her maiden name may have been Frazier,
as a Robert Frazier was living with the family in 1880 and two Frazier nephews
were living with the couple in 1900. Nancy died in 1910, but no listing of her

Alfred Lysle, age 4, Louis Pearce, age 2 and Maria, age 7 months. In the 1870
census, the wife of James was labeled as Sarah. A child named Ella had been
added to the family. By 1880 the family lived in Pittsburgh on Frankstown
Avenue. She died on October 30 in Pittsburgh’s 19th Ward at age 52 and was

and Ella G. Ryon of Washington DC. They appear on a 1910 census with 5
children, including Walter. In his World War I draft card, Walter lived at 5747
Ellsworth Avenue in Pittsburgh and was working as a window decorator for
Kaufmann’s Department store. He was single at that time. By 1930 he was married
to wife Pearl and had 1 child, Willa. He died in O’Hara Township at age 39
years, 8 months and 16 days of carcinoma of the stomach. He was interred on
