Jennie (Shaw) Kerr], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Danehower, Hiram W., (view 2), 20 May 1860 - 22 Nov 1892, Section 5, Range 13,
Lot 6 owned by Margaret Whited, [cannot be found on census records, but he was
a resident of O’Hara Township in the 1890s. From a newspaper account, he was
interested in horticulture and had built a greenhouse next to the family home
near Pleasant Valley. On the night of November 22, 1892, he lit a fire in the
boiler with which he kept the greenhouse warm, and the family went to bed.
Hours later the house was fully engulfed in flames. None of the family could
be rescued], (contributed by Diane Nichols)
Danehower, Emma J. Whited, (view 2), w/o Hiram W., 02 Aug 1856 - 22 Nov 1892,
Section 5, Range 13, Lot 6 owned by Margaret Whited, [was the wife of Hiram
Danehower, and the daughter of Thomas Whited and his wife Margaret Sloup. She
was probably born in Allegheny City where her parents show up on an 1860
census, and had at least 10 siblings. She married Hiram Danehower around the
year 1882 and had one daughter, Amy. She died with her husband in the Pleasant
Valley fire of their home on November 22, 1892], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Darby, A., Died July 19, 1881, Aged 48 Years, Section 5, Range 9, Lot 14 owned
by Mrs. Rosina Darby, [Abraham Darby was born in England about the year 1833.
He is a bit mysterious, as there is no immigration records that can be found
for him. His wife’s name, on the deed to the plot, is Rosina (Rosanna ?) but
she can’t be found on immigration either. No census record for Abraham was
found in Pittsburgh. It is possible that he is the same Abraham Darby with wife
Rosanna found in Tipton, Staffordshire, England, but they were in Tipton in
1881 for the census, meaning he would have immigrated and died within the same
year. He died in Sharpsburg on July 17, 1881 of heart disease. He was interred
in Section 3, Range 10, Lot 8 single interments and moved on March 14, 1911 to
a family plot. Wife Rosanna was not found between 1881 and 1910 in census
records. But in 1920 she was in Collier Township at age 80, an inmate in the
Allegheny County Tuberculosis Sanitarium. She died there on June 26, 1920 at
age 80, shortly after that census was taken. Her cause of death was pulmonary
tuberculosis and she was interred on June 28th. She has no tombstone],

Darr, Eliza J., 1833 - 1888, Mother, Section 2, Range 18, Lot 6, [wife of
teamster Nelson Darr. In 1880 the couple lived in O’Hara Township with their 5
children. She died of cancer in December of 1888. Another son, Harry Clay
Darr, is interred in the lot, dying at age 5 of scarlet fever in 1876. The
child has no tombstone], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Darr, Nelson A., 1831 - 1903, Father, Section 2, Range 18, Lot 6, [stated on
the 1880 census that he was born in PA about 1834. In 1890 his name was on the
O’Hara Township Veterans Schedule, with a note adding him as a teamster during
the Civil War. Since no pension was ever applied for, he may have been a
civilian hired by the Army to transport supplies and water to the troops, but
there is no official record of him. Teamsters were paid about the same as an
enlisted corporal, and after the war there were organizations determined to
collect pensions for them, an idea which soon collapsed. Nelson died in
Diluth, Minnesota in 1903 at age 78], (contributed by Diane Nichols)

panicked the North into recruiting more men. This Regiment helped bury the dead
at Bull Run, and then hurried to Antietam and Fredericksburg as support troops.
They also were at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness. Henry was
wounded at Cold Harbor, Va. on June 3, 1864, but was mustered out on the 21st
of June 1865 at Washington DC. In 1870 Henry was married to a wife named

daughter Bertha was married to glassblower John Bethel. She died on Aug 28 in
Sharpsburg and was interred on September 2, 1880. No cause of death is listed,
however, 9 months later, in June of 1881, a 9 month old child named Bertha D.
Bethel was interred next to her, so it is possible that she died in childbirth.
John Bethel stayed in the area for a while, being found in a at least one

perhaps in childbirth, and the child died 9 months later. Elizabeth’s husband
died in Philadelphia in 1893. While some of the family remained in Pittsburgh,
Eliza was found in Bristol, Bucks Co PA in the 1900 census. She died there at
age 75 on June 10, 1909 of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was interred on June

Sharpsburg census there are 5 children in their household, including Annie, age

them may be her children, as her marriage to John is only listed by one

may have died in Germany. Supposedly John married in 1885 to Elizabeth Fugh,
but they never appear together on a census record. John’s first 2 children,
Stella and Magdalena, have been listed as having Elizabeth as a mother. But the
first easily-found evidence of him in Pittsburgh was the 1900 Sharpsburg

She was born on January 30, 1877 and a year and a half later lost both her
brother and her mother. Her father moved in with his mother in Etna, but young
Bessie was difficult for the older woman to raise. The family story is that she
was a fussy eater, and so emotionally upset by the disappearance of her mother
and brother, that she hardly would eat, and became quite ill herself. A beloved
uncle, Alexander Lambie, took her into his home, with instructions from David
Cubbage that she was to be offered any food she wanted at any time. She soon
became well and time stabilized her life until she was 10, when both her
grandmother Lambie and Uncle Alex Lambie died. She once again lived with her

Cubbage, [Jacob Ferber was the sixth child out of 9 children born to George
John Ferber and Elizabeth Roesch, both immigrants from Germany. He was born on
October 17, 1883, according to family records, while the family was living on a
farm in Shaler Township. They moved to a farm in O’Hara Township sometime in
his childhood. When he was about 17 years old his father had a crippling
accident on the farm and Jacob and his younger brother Albert took over the
brunt of the hard farm work. The family moved to a smaller farm and both boys
married, built their own houses on the Maurer’s Lane corner of the property,
held down full time jobs as well as farmed for their father. While Al had a
milk route, picking up jugs of milk from other farmers, Jake had a bottling
operation in his small barn. He also raised pigs for the family. He married
Bessie Cubbage and his first child was born in 1906. The last of his 4 children
was born in 1915. Jacob died at age 50 on October 2, 1933 at his home in O’Hara

Charles Zumpft when a young German immigrant came to board at their home in
Sharpsburg in 1870. Born in Prussia, she was probably the daughter of Carl
August Heinrich Zumpft and Amelia Blum, the parents of Albert and Charles. No
immigration record has been found for any of them, but the 1900 census shows
that she immigrated around 1868. By 1880 she and Fredrick Nicholas (the
boarder) were married and had 3 children, Otto, Dora and Louisa. Cemetery
records show that the couple had lost 3 young children in 1878 and 1879. In
1883 another blow was destined for her as her husband committed suicide. With a
20 year gap between census records, she was found in Millvale in 1900,
remarried to George Fitch, the superintendent of the water works. Of her 4
living children, 3 daughters were in the home, Lulu (Louise), Lillia and Alma.
A grandchild, Neveta Thompson, was also in the home, the daughter of her
daughter Dorothy, who had died several months before. George died that same
year and in 1910 she was living with her married daughter Alma, still in
Millvale. Amelia died in Millvale on January 25, 1913 at age 69 of a cerebral

command of Captain L. Bradford. He joined the army when he was a 15 year old
farmer born in Frankfort, New York. Taken prisoner at Sackette Harbor in May of
1813, he was exchanged in 1814 and discharged in February of 1815 after being
wounded by a cannonball at the battle of Lake Champlain on board the Brig
Eagle. He settled in Indiana Township where he was found in 1830, married to
presumably Mary Ann. By 1840 she was a widow and from there she is hard to
track. The Directory of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Cities finds her at times in
Manchester, Allegheny City and finally Sharpsburg, where she occupied herself
