In the Court of Quarter Sessions of Lawrence County, Pa., June Sessions, 1899.  
Commonwealth vs. James Kostel, Case #23.  Charge: Breaking and entering.  
Defendant pleaded guilty and sentenced to pay one dollar to the Commonwealth, 
pay the costs of the prosecution, restore the property stolen, if not already 
restored, or pay the owner the full value thereof, and be committed to the 
custody of the Managers of the Pennsylvania Reform School until he attains the 
age of twenty-one years, etc.

Notes made upon the boy's arrival at the Pennsylvania Reform School at 
Morganza, Pa.:
     James Kostel, No. 5699, Division C.  Mother dead.  Father Frank Kostel a 
laborer living at #10 Wright Street, Cleveland, Ohio.  Sent here for stealing 
brass from a freight car.  
     Description: Height 4' 10 1/4"; weight (left blank).  Brown hair, gray 
eyes, fair complexion.  Scar from being injured by a toy cannon on back and 
palm of right hand near base of little finger.  Scar from cut at point of 
little finger left hand.
     Age: 10 on Aug. 10, 1899.  Received: Jan. 10, 1899.  Born: Ohio of 
Bohemian parentage.  Catholic.  Father not intemperate.  Parent owns property.  
2 older brothers, 1 older sister, 1 younger sister.  Illiterate.  Swears, lies, 
steals, uses tobacco.  Is not intemperate.  Has not been arrested before.
