ALBANY – Margarite Elizabeth Hall, 95, of Alexandria, Va., died Thursday,
September 12, 2002. A memorial service was held on Sunday, September 15, 2002,
at the Chapel at Goodwin House in Alexandria, Va. Graveside services will be
held in Albany, Ga., Saturday at 2:oop.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery with Ross
Powell, Director of Homebound Ministries of Sherwood Baptist Church officiating.
A native of Albany, Miss Hall, the daughter of the late George T. and Susie
Collins Hall and granddaughter of the late Charles W. and Susan Ann Tyus
Collins, pioneering families of Mitchell County, was born on March 1, 1907. She
attended Albany schools, graduating from Albany High School in 1924. She
attended Martha Webster College in Washington, D.C., and attained her
undergraduate and graduate degrees from the College of Williamsburg, VA.
In 1935 Miss Hall began her work with the Girl Scouts of America. She
worked with the Washington, D.C. Council servicing Prince George County,
Arlington, and Alexandria, VA. Moving to Richmond, Va., Miss Hall served as
Program Director and later Executive Director of the Girl Scouts in that city.
She worked in New York City as Assistant Director of Intermediate and Senior
Girl Scout Programs at the National Headquarters. In the 1950’s she assisted in
writing the revision of the Girl Scout Handbook. Also, while on the
Headquarters Staff, she planned and directed the World Conference for Senior
Girl Scouts and Guides. In the 1960’s, she was involved in three Girl Scout
Round-Ups. Representing the National Headquarters, she went to Japan and India
as a program director aiding them with their camping program. Upon returning to
the states and wanting to return to a local council, she accepted the job as
program director of the Cleveland GS Council and remained there until her
retirement in 1972. However, not being satisfied with remaining a retiree, in
1975 she accepted a position as Director of the International Conference
entitled, “Women in Action.” In June 1978 she accepted a job with the National
Board of the YWCA to plan and direct a seminar for outstanding women serving
in executive positions around the world. Her last job was again with the Girl
Scouts at their National Conference in Washington, D.C. in the 80’s. She was
responsible for the opening ceremony at the foot of the Washington Monument,
thus ending her Girl Scout career where she had started it in 1935 in Washington, D.C.
During her career Miss Hall traveled extensively and received many awards
and honors for her work. In 1972, she moved to the Goodwin House, Alexandria, Va.,
where she was very active until her health failed.
Miss Hall was a member of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria.
