Obituary of Morton "Tony" Burnett 
as written in "The Albany Herald" dated 18 Nov 1968.  


Morton (Tony) Burnett, 73, of 306 Fourth Avenue, former Chief of Police of 
Albany, died Sunday, 17 Nov 1968, morning at Phoebe Putney Hospital following a 
lengthy illness.  Mr. Burnett had been a resident of Albany since 1927, serving with the 
police department from that time until his retirement in May 1960.  He was appointed 
Police Chief in 1948 and served until January 1956, when he stepped down to assistant 
chief and was succeeded as chief by W. S. (Billy) Lee. After Lee was replaced by Henry 
Reid as chief, and Reid was demoted in March 1959, Burnett served as acting chief until 
Laurie Pritchett assumed the post in July 1959.  He then assumed his position as assistant 
chief until his retirement.  He was born 8 May 1895, in Mitchell County, son of the late 
Rev H. Newton Burnett and Alice Mansfield Burnett.  He was a member of the Byne 
Memorial Baptist Church, Fraternal Order of Police, Albany Lodge No. 24, and an 
honorary member of the Albany Chamber of Commerce.  survivors include his wife, the 
former Pearl Iva Thomas of Mitchell County; one daughter, Mrs. Hugh Bius of Albany; 
three sons, Bentley Burnett, U. S. Army stationed in South Dakota, Thomas Burnett of 
Albany, and Jack Burnett of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Mrs. W. H. Peacock of Perry, 
Fla.; three brothers, Douglas Burnett of Tampa, Fla., and Silas and Turner Burnett of 
Mitchell County and 10 grandchildren.  the funeral was to be held today at 4:00 PM at 
Byne Memorial Baptist Church.  The Rev E. A. Abbott, pastor and Dr. C. R. Pittard were 
to conduct the service. Interment was to follow in Riverside Cemetery.  The following 
were to serve as pallbearers: Active. E. M. Lewis, R. L. Culpepper, Ed Edmonds, Herbert 
Rushton, D. S. Hautman Jr. and Louie Brunson; honorary, City and County Peace 
Officers and Dr. Charles McCall, Dr. Berry Bowman, Dr. E. S. Armstrong and Dr. J. Z. 
McDaniel. Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.
