Smith Franklin, Jan. 16. - (Special) - Woodie Edward Smith, prominent automobile of Franklin, died at a local hospital this morning after a stroke of paralysis on January 2. Mr. Smith was the son of the late George L. and Mrs. Martha Griffin Smith, of Nansemond County, and the husband of Mrs. Lilliam [sic; Lillian] Saunders Smith, of Franklin. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. E.A. Hatch, and one son, Lyle S. Smith, both of Franklin; two brothers, Arthur and Paul Smith, of Suffolk, and one sister, Mrs. Frances S. Ralph, of the Liberty Spring community. Mr. Smith was a former member of Liberty Spring Christian Church, and upon moving to Franklin 26 years ago, moved his membership to Franklin Christian Church. He was also a member Modern Woodmen and the Woodmen of the World. Funeral services will be conducted at Franklin Christian Church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Dr. Elwood W. Jones, the Rev. R.D. Stephenson and Dr. I.W. Johnson. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Ray Boyette, Scotland Neck; S.W. Rawls, J.L. Camp, Jr., W.H. Jones, Dr. B.J. Ray, C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, W.M. Bradshaw and Dr. A.P. Cutchin. Members of Mr. Smith's Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers. ****************************************************************************** FUNERAL SERVICES FOR WOODIE SMITH ARE HELD MONDAY Funeral services for Woodie Edward Smith, a well-known citizen of this town, who died Sunday morning following a stroke of paralysis on January 2, were held from the Franklin Congregational Christian Church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Dr. Elwood W. Jones, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church, conducted the services. Mr. Smith was born near Liberty Spring, Nansemond County, August 14, 1880, the son of the late George L. and Mrs. Martha Griffin Smith. He united with the Liberty Spring Christian Church at an early age but in later years, after he had come to make his home in this town, he moved his membership the Franklin Christian Church. On June 21, 1902, Mr. Smith married Miss Lillie Alberta Saunders of Nansemond County, who survives him. He moved to Franklin in 1912 and subsequently became engaged in the automobile business. In 1917 he secured the first local Ford agency in this town, which he retained for ten years until 1927. Mr. Smith was a man of many splendid traits of character and one whose genial nature endeared his to his many friends and associates. Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Lyle S. Smith, and a daughter, Mrs. E.A. Hatch, Jr., both of Franklin; two brothers, Arthur and Paul Smith, of Suffolk; and one sister, Mrs. Frances S. Ralph, of Liberty Spring, Nansemond County. Interment was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the pallbearers being Ray Boyette, of Scotland Neck, N.C.; W.M. Bradshaw, James L. Camp, Jr., Dr. Ashley Cutchin, W.H. Jones, S.W. Rawls, Dr. Burton J. Ray and C.C. Vaughan, 3rd. Members of the Men's Bible Class of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church, of which Mr. Smith was a member, served as honorary pallbearers. Hatch, Sr. of Wakefield; Herbert Hatch of Richmond; and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith, Miss Elizabeth Smith, George Smith, Mrs. J.J. Ralph and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Briggs of Suffolk.
