Melvin E. Cruser Dies;
Funeral This Morning

NORFOLK A funeral service for Melvn Elleyson Cruser, 71, well known Norfolk 
attorney, who died Monday at 5 a.m. at his home, 1006 Manteo St., will be 
conducted today at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Walton W. 
Davis, rector.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Cruser had been in failing health for some time.  A native of Norfolk County, he 
was the son of James H. Cruser and Mrs. Emma Parker Cruser.
After attending secondary schools in Norfolk he completed law studies at 
Washington and Lee University in 1909.  Shortly afterward he worked as a title 
examiner for Guaranty Title & Trust Corp.
He began his law practice in July 1910.  Cruser specialized in real estate law, 
estates and general chancery.  He served as commissioner in chancery in Circuit 
Court and the Court of Law and Chancery in Norfolk.
Cruser was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.  He was a former vestryman 
of the church and had served as its registrar since 1933.
He was a past high priest of Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter I, a past 
district deputy grand master of Masonic District 35, past master of Owens 
Masonic Lodge 164, and a member of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Antoinette Norwood Selden Cruser, he is survived by two 
sons, Melvin E. Cruser, Jr. of Virginia Beach and Dr. Fred Selden Cruser of 
Salem; a sister, Mrs. Sanford Taylor of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Lawrence 
C. Cruser of Norfolk and J.R. Cruser of Bayside; and three grandsons.
