Norfolk Virginian January 31, 1877
OBITUARY
Departed this life at 6:30 a.m., Tuesday, at his residence, No. 66 Church
street, EDWARD F. APPLEWHITE, after a brief illness. The deceased has been in
very delicate health for the past two years, which he withstood without ever
murmuring, and always a smile and kind word for any friend with whom he might
meet. He was born in Chuckatuck, Nansemond county, Va., in 1824, and was there
educated. In 1842, he removed to Portsmouth, Va., and served his apprenticeship
as a smith. At the outbreak of our civil struggle, he marched to the front with
the United Artillery, Captain Thomas Kevill, and manfully with his command did
he battle for his country’s rights and, after serving to the bitter end, was
honorably paroled and returned to Norfolk, Va., where he resided up to his
demise as a good, conscientious and honorable citizen.
His funeral services will be held TODAY at 3 p.m. at Christ Church. Friends and
acquaintances are invited to attend.
AN OLD SCHOOLMATE.
