Pamela Sorensen
Our sweet, kind Pamela passed away April 17, 2003, following a courageous
battle with a brain tumor. Although her influence will remain forever, her
leaving us was far too soon.
She was born on October 2, 1951, to William Connor and Betty Ann Stairs, in
Inglewood, California. She grew up in California, moving numerous times
throughout her childhood. She graduated from Hart High School in 1969, and
attended Cypress College in California for two years. While in college, she
attended LDS Institute under Haus Marble of Garland, Utah, where she received
the Spiritual Special award.
Pamela joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in her late
teens. She started attending a singles ward where she met Jeffry Dale
Sorensen, also a recent convert. They were married on January 15, 1972 and
were later sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple for time and all eternity.
They moved to Wellsville, Utah in 1978 and have called it home ever since.
They were blessed with six beautiful children and five darling grandchildren.
Pamela s life was her family. She was always the first to plan our
get-togethers, and loved to have fun, and laugh with us all. Being around Pam
was always an absolute joy. She loved having her kids together for dinner and
playing games. Pam adored and delighted in her grandkids, and would spend
countless hours reading them stories and singing them songs. They are memories
that will last a lifetime. She was a great example of compassion to her family
as she cared full time for Dale s father for three years, while he slowly died
of dementia.
Pamela was an active member of the LDS church, serving in numerous callings in
Relief Society, Primary, and most recently as Young Women s President, where
she loved being with the youth of the church. She was always happy and willing
to serve.
Pamela was always busy selflessly serving others. She was an active member of
the Lions Club, and was always thinking of ways they could help and serve
those in our community. She loved canning food from her garden, and making her
kids clothes when they were younger. In the last several years before her
illness, she became actively involved in gathering genealogy of her family,
and taking the names to the temple. We are sure they had a grand reunion when
she reached the other side.
Children were always a great joy to Pam. While her own kids were young, she
opened her heart to many others, babysitting in her home. Sign language was
something Pamela learned at a young age, and she enjoyed using this skill
while working with the kids at Hill Crest Elementary as a sign language
interpreter. Other employment included Wellsville Elementary and Willow Valley
Middle School where she was a cook. Pamela enjoyed the many friendships she
built while working with these ladies.
Pamela was a genuinely good person who accepted and loved people for who they
were. During her illness we could still see the love she had for us when we
looked into her gentle eyes. We know that our lives have truly been blessed by
her presence. For her, we are thankful that her worrying and suffering have
ended. For her family and friends, we can only remember how it used to be and
contemplate what might have been. There will always be an emptiness in our
hearts that we will try to fill with our priceless memories, while we
anxiously await the day when we shall meet again.
Pamela is survived by her husband Dale, of Wellsville, daughters Michele (Don)
Olsen, of Logan, Karen Sorensen, of Salt Lake City, Leslie (Todd) Flygare, of
Logan, Jessica Sorensen, of Wellsville, Joann Sorensen, of Wellsville, a son,
Bryce Sorensen, of Wellsville, and a step-son, Jeffry Sorensen, Jr. of
Vancouver, WA.; her mother, Betty Stairs of Sherman Oaks, CA.; two sisters,
Susan (Bruce) Searls of Apple Valley, CA and Melinda (Van) Stover of
Hawthorne, CA. and a brother, Bill (Cindy) Stairs of Apple Valley, CA. She is
also survived by her five grandchildren and three nieces. Pamela is preceded
in death by her father, William Stairs, a sister Paula Stairs, and her in-laws
Edgar and Edith Sorensen.
The family wishes to pay a special thanks to Sandy Peterson, Pam s personal
caretaker, and all the wonderful nurses and everyone who helped make Pamela s
last few years comfortable, and which also allowed us to keep her with us in
our home.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 21, 2003, at 12:00 noon at the
Wellsville 7th Ward located at 660 South 100 West, Wellsville, with Bishop
Gary Bates conducting. Family and friends may call Sunday evening from 6 until
8 at the same location, and Monday from 10:40 until 11:40 at the church prior
to services. Burial will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery.
