                                L. GRAY BECK

   L. Gray Beck, retired president/chief executive officer of GTE
Southwest (now Verizon) and longtime San Angelo business, cultural and
civic leader, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at his residence.

A memorial service celebrating Becks earthly life will be at 2 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 12, at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Ron
Sutto will officiate. Johnsons Funeral Home is handling the
   arrangements.

Gray was born July 20, 1911, in Everett, Wash. Shortly after
graduating from high school at the age of 17 he went to work for the
West Coast Telephone Co. After a year, he resigned to attend the
University of Washington, graduating in 1933 with an electrical
engineering degree. Except for his military service during World War
II, his career was in the telecommunication industry during a period
of unprecedented demand, growth and rapidly advancing communications
   technology.

He entered military service in 1940. His assignments were widely
dispersed and demanding. From Alaska to Belfast, London, North Africa,
Tunisia, Algiers, Naples and Washington, D.C., his responsibilities
included planning and overall supervision of telephone, teletypes and
wartime communications on the front, behind the lines and at various
   headquarter locations.

He left the military in 1945 with the rank of colonel. His military
awards included the Legion of Merit by the U.S. Army and the Order of
   the British Empire.

After completing his tour of duty, Gray joined Pacific Telephone and
Telegraph Co. in Seattle. He held several management positions, before
returning in 1947 to the West Coast Telephone Co. as district manager
   at Everett, Wash.

He was promoted to a number of management positions before being named
vice president and general manager of the West Coast Co. in 1958.

In 1964 following the merger of the West Coast Telephone Co. with
General Telephone, Beck came to San Angelo as executive vice
president, assuming in 1968 the presidency of General Telephone Co. of
   the Southwest in San Angelo.

After completing more than 43 years in the communication industry,
Gray retired in 1976. He was witness to and a part of the greatest
generation of communication advancement on record at that time.

From his arrival in San Angelo until his health began to fail, Gray
was active in local and state affairs. Some of the many prestigious
positions he held were bank director, director of St. Johns Hospital,
Texas A&M Executive Development Program, vice president of the Texas
Council on Economic Education, Texas Research League, president of the
Texas Telephone Association, chairman of the board of MHMR Center for
Greater West Texas, member of the boards of the San Angelo Symphony,
Angelo Civic Theatre, Rio Concho Manor, San Angelo Chamber of
Commerce, president of San Angelo Industries, chairman of Goals for
Texas and president of San Angelo United Way.

In 1973 he was named Citizen of the Year by the San Angelo Chamber of
   Commerce.

In addition to his many civic activities, Gray was very active in the
First Presbyterian Church of San Angelo.

While Gray was stationed in Naples, Italy, he met Mary June Cooper of
Minneapolis, Minn., who was stationed with the American Red Cross in
Naples. They were married in 1945 in the chapel at Fort Meyer, Va.

Their children are Linda Kandel of North Salem, N.Y., Larry Beck of
Gig Harbor, Wash., and Bryan Beck and his wife, Janice, of
Albuquerque, N.M. They have six grandchildren, Bree Linton, David
Kandel, Lucas and Courtney Beck, and Brandon and Justin Beck. Gray
also has one brother, David Beck and wife, Rosemary, of Tacoma, Wash.

Gray was lauded by his peers and associates for his leadership
abilities. He was a leader with total integrity and great tenacity.
Failure, even mediocrity, was not acceptable to him only success.

His interests were broad and varied. He loved water and winter sports,
played golf, sang in the church choir and loved to travel and garden.
All family activities were important to him. He was truly a man for
   all seasons.

Survivors include his wife, Mary June, his children; his
grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law.

The family requests memorials honoring L. Gray Beck be made to the
   charity of the donors choice.
