DANIEL SMITH

  Daniel Smith died in the Frantz Hospital, Confluence, on Tuesday, May 27, at 
the age of 59 years, 8 months and 1 day.  He had been sick since January 15th 
from cancer of the stomach.
  Mr. Smith was born in Reading, Pa., September 28, 1870.  He was a son of Isaac 
and Sarah Smith, the former of whom preceded him to the grave; the latter, who 
is 89 years old, is living in Grand Island, Neb.  When he was young the family 
moved to the West where he spent his younger years.  When the Confluence tannery 
was built in 1894 he came to Confluence to work and until his death remained a 
resident of the place.
  On July 27, 1897, he was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Fields.  To this 
marriage were born seven children of whom one died in infancy and six survive.  
The surviving children are Leona, wife of T. E. Strickler, Vanderbilt, Pa.; 
Pearle, wife of Paul Hunter, Boswell; Alice, wife of Harry Lenhart, Confluence, 
and Charles I., Daniel and William all at home, and nine grandchildren.  He is 
also survived by his wife and mother, four brothers and one sister.
  On the day of Mr. Smith's death one of his sons, Daniel, was graduated from 
the Confluence High School.
  Mr. Smith was a member of Confluence Tent, Knights of the Maccabees.  When 
young he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was a sincere and consistent 
Christian up to the day of his death.  He was a devoted husband and father and 
led a clean and honorable life during his three score years on earth.
  The funeral took place at the family home at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Leonard Hoover, 
pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Somerset, officiating.  Interment in 
the Ursina cemetery.  The floral tributes from friends were beautiful.  The 
pallbearers were P.H.S. Hunter, William A. Burnworth, Charles H. Stark, M. E. 
Goller and Harry Hunter.  Among those who attended the funeral were: Mr. and 
Mrs. T. E. Strickler, Vanderbilt; Mrs. Clyde Smith, Connellsville; Samuel Fields 
and Thomas Fields, Kingwood, W.Va., and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hunter, Boswell.  
Mrs. Smith received a number of sympathetic letters from relatives and friends, 
who were unable to attend the funeral.
