    LIFELONG RESIDENT HIGHLY RESPECTED

Abraham Rhodes, aged 88 years, one of the most highly esteemed
residents of the Seventh Ward and Veteran of the Civil war died at his
residence, 207 Newell Avenue, Friday evening, March 18, at 8 o'clock
following a brief illness. Mr. Rhodes death was the result of
pneumonia, which he contracted a few days ago. He was born October 28,
1838, and had lived his entire life in this city where he worked at the
carpenter trade. He was an honored member of the Mahoning Presbyterian
Church, and he had served as an elder for 40 years. During the Civil
war he enlisted with Captain Cooper's famous Battery B, Pennsylvania
Light Artillery and served throughout the war. He was the last
survivor of Battery B. in the Seventh Ward. Mr. Rhodes had always
taken an active interest in religious and civic affairs. He was a good
neighbor and friend and his death will be much regretted by his many
friends and surviving comrades. Besides his wife, Samantha (Elder)
Rhodes, to whom he was married 58 years ago, he leaves one daughter,
Mrs. Frank W. Wallace of this city, and two sons, A. Elder Rhodes of
Youngstown, Ohio and John A. Rhodes at home. Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes
celebrated their golden wedding anniversary eight years ago. Funeral
services will be conducted Monday March 21 at 3 p.m. from the family
home on Newell Avenue. Reverend D. C. Schnehly of the Mahoning
Presbyterian Church will be in charge.
