Herbert D. Smith, 80, a pioneer in the household moving business in West 
Chester, died last night in the Chester County Hospital following a lengthy 
illness.

The husband of Florence H. Smith, he resided at 400 Price St., West Chester.  
He was the owner of T.E. Smith and Son, a household moving firm which this year 
is celebrating its 80th year of operation.

Mr. Smith was born in West Chester, a son of Thomas Evans and Henrietta D. 
Smith.  He was educated in the West Chester School System and entered the 
business with his father upon graduation.

His firm, for 40 years, was principal carrier for the Daily Local News, and his 
trucks were a familiar sight throughout Chester County.  The company also 
carried the U.S. Mail, giving up the contract near the end of World War I.

In addition, his fleet for 20 years handled deliveries for many Philadelphia 
department stores in the Chester County area.

Mr. Smith was honored by the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association for 
outstanding service to the organization.  He served as secretary of the 
Household  Goods Tariff Group when the trucking industry was first regulated in 
Pennsylvania.

He was a member of the West Chester United Methodist Church; the West Chester 
Masonic Lodge; the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association; Tall Cedars of 
Lebanon, Forest 22, of West Chester.  In addition, he was also active in civil 
defense during WW II.

Survivors, besides his wife, are a son, Herbert D. II, of West Chester, and 
three grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service from the Funeral Home 
of Joseph E. Boyd, successor to Harold A. Famous, 101 S. Church St., West 
Chester, Pa., on Monday, June 17, 2 p.m.  Interment Green Mount Cemetery.  
Friends may call Sunday evening.  Masonic Service 8 p.m., Sunday evening.

Funeral services for Herbert D. Smith, husband of Florence H. Smith of 400 
Price St., West Chester, were held at the Joseph E. Boyd Funeral Home, West 
Chester, yesterday at 2 p.m.

The Rev. Dr. Harold D. Flood of the United Methodist Church of West Chester, 
was in charge.  Interment was in Green Mount Cemetery with the following 
bearers: George Heinold, Ralph Smith, Jr., Charles Wilson, Howard Griffith, 
Richard Speer and William Fackler. On Sunday evening, the West Chester Lodge 
322, F and AM, held services at the funeral home, conducted by Henry Huff, 
worshipful master.
