Tony J. Merkey Sr.
Tony Joe Merkey Sr., age 62, went to be with the Lord, Sunday
February 18, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. at Jane Phillips Medical Center after
a short battle with cancer. He was born June 13, 1944 in Carnegie,
Oklahoma and reared in Cloud Chief, OK. His family moved to Dewey in
1952 where he attended school and graduated with the class of 1963.
In 1964 he joined the U.S. Army reserve serving six years receiving
an honorable discharge in 1970. He married Shirley Ann Evans on May
22, 1965 in Bartlesville and worked as a meat cutter at Bills
Supermarket for twenty five years and many other jobs including
Bartlesville, Dewey and Caney School systems, the Hillcrest Country
Club, and was working as a U.S. Mail truck driver until the time of
his illness for W. C. Burks. Tony loved woodworking and showing
classic 62 Chevy.
Mr. Merkey is survived by his wife of forty one years: Shirley of the
home, a son, Tony J. Merkey Jr. of Lawton, OK, one brother, D. R.
Merkey and his wife Joy of Nowata, OK, two nieces, Cherry Kalbrier,
and Tom of Nowata, OK, Michele and Mike Balduff, of Naperville, IL,
four nephews, D.R. Merkey 111 of Tulsa, Robert R. Merkey and Eugenia
of Ochelata, Paul Strode and Fran of Tyler, TX and David Strode of
Alaska, his mother in law Irene Evans, sister in law Donna Perry, his
two cats, Smokey & Mouth
He was preceded in death by his parents David and Bonnie Fay Merkey
and one sister Erma LaFay Womack.
Funeral services will be Friday February 23, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the
First Assembly of God with Rev. Darryl Wootton officiating with
interment to follow in the White Rose Cemetery under the direction of
Neekamp -Luginbuel Funeral home.
