CRESWELL, HERBERT
(22 Feb 1929, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK):
Herbert Creswell was born in Oklahoma May 8, 1909. He died February 16,
1929, at the age of 19 years and 9 months and 8 days. Funeral services
were held at the Methodist church February 18, 1929, at 3:00 p.m. Rev
Rector had charge of the services.
Herbert Creswell, nineteen year old youth of Moorewood, was shot Saturday
evening at 3:00 o'clock while returning to his home, by Claude Riland,
representative of the law, when according to him, the boy resisted the
attempt of the officer to arrest him.
Herbert Creswell, in company with Jack Sharp, had started from Moorewood
to his home which is about one half mile from there. The car was parked
when the officer approached them. It is reported that the boys had been
drinking and that Creswell resisted the officer. According to statements,
Creswell and Riland scuffled and the officer shot him through the chest.
He was shot twice and fell about one hundred yards from where the car was
parked. Jack Sharp, eye witness to the killing, stated that he remained
in the car.
Riland was arrested and placed in the Custer county jail at Arapahoe where
he faces murder charges of the first degree.
The youth's mother and father were en route to California when his death
occurred and were summoned from the home of relatives near Fort Worth,
where they had stopped for a few days. They are well known residents of
this community and have lived here for about twenty years. The boy was
born and reared near Moorewood and attended high school there.
He was staying with Bynum Anderson and family who live on the Creswell
farm. Herbert had farmed last year on his father's land.
Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist church in Moorewood
at 4:00 o'clock. Burial was made in the Moorewood cemetery. Rev. Rector
of the Methodist church conducted the services.
Besides his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Creswell, he is survived
by one small brother, Roy Creswell.
