Divorces from Lawrence County, Ohio

Submitted by Martha J. Martin

The following divorces were taken from various newspapers and court records in Lawrence County, Ohio.
This is by no means a complete list. I will, however, be adding to this list periodically as I get the time to do so, so
please check back from time to time.
Please keep in mind that in some of these cases, there was just a suit FILED for divorce, and there wasn't any
indication whether the divorce was actually awarded.
I just pulled what was put in the newspapers as it was printed and have no other information concerning these divorces.

WELLS, Hattie E. vs WELLS, E.E., Dr. Cause: extreme cruelty
Source: MI 28 Jan 1916
Misc: Dr. WELLS filed a cross-petition and answer in which he admitted that he had said that he no longer loved Mrs.
WELLS or desried to live with her, and set forth that she was a 'nagger' and that she had continually 'nagged' him
during their entire married life.
As regards the property he said that he owned the property that thye now have when they were married and that Mrs.
WELLS did not contibute a cent towards it.
The case was submitted to Judge CORN last Saturday, and the arguments in the caase made last Monday.
Judge CORN stated that measured by the technical rules of law and evidence neither party was entitiled to a divorce.
He said that he appreciated the candor and frankness with which Dr. WELLS had related their domestic affairs in
which Mrs. WELLS had constantly 'nagged' him all their married life, harrassing and complaining until life became
almost unbearable. Dr. WELLS stated he said that she complained about finances, about his dress appearance, and
cleanliness and Mrs. WELLS admitted this complaining because she was proud of him and his profession and was
ambitious for him to suceed.
This constant 'nagging' and complaining to any length of time to a husband will amount to cruelty o the part of a wife,
and would justify a husband in filling a suit for divorce. Constant nagging on the part of wife, for a time makes her a
common scold. A woman can make a heaven or a hell for a man. The constant dipping of water will wear the hardest
rock away, and a 'nagging' wife can upset the most even-tempered husband. Dr. WELLS, he said, was not entirely
blamable in the case and was justified for reprimanding the conduct of Mrs. WELLS while he was on the witness
stand.
Her conduct, however, was not sufficient to drive her from home. She states she wants to go back and live with Dr.
WELLS. But he said that he did not believe that such could be the case. There was no hopes of them living together,
as all marital relations has ceased to exist between them.
He warded the plaintiff a divorce upon the grounds of cruelty. He gave her an insurance policy, which was in her name
for $2500 maturing in November against which there was a loan of $850. Mrs. WELLS was assured $300 of this loan.
He also gave her $50 in money.
The claim in the Mutual Insurance policies were given to Dr. WELLS. He was awarded the home which was in Mrs.
WELLS' name and vauled at $4000. Mrs. WELLS was to relinquish the $100 note held against Dr. WELLS, and Dr.
WELLS is to pay all debts.
The $500 must be paid to Mrs. WELLS within six months and Mrs. WELLS must give a quit claim to the property
within ten days.
The attorneys are requested to make an equitable distribution of the household property.
