St. Lawrence Parish established 1851. Church erected
1875. Cemetery started between 1851 & 1875 exact date
unknown. Cemetery contains one acre. Offical Workers
Progress Administration (WPA) project no.'s
465-42-3-467, 665-42-3-232. WPA map of the Cemetery
shows 156 plots. More plots have been added since then.

Per conversation with a Mr. Jermann at the cemetery, who
was born in the area in 1922. There originally was a St.
Lawrence Church on the site of the cemetery. It was a
small wooden building about the size of a house. The
services were conducted once a month by a traveling
priest. Many of the people in the cemetery were from
Ginting, Switzerland which is about ten miles from
Basel. Almost all of these Swiss immigrants worked in
quarries in Switzerland and they came to the
Independence area to work in local quarries. When they
got to Independence, Ohio they always checked in with
the Blessing family. The Blessings would house them
until they found a place to live. When they decided to
build a larger church Mr. Blessing said he would
contribute a large amount toward the new church if it
was built in the downtown area of Independence instead
of on Rockside Rd. which was out of the way.
