Lawrence Peelle* 9th g.grandfather, b. 1601, British
Kingdom, England. He married unknown* (Wife:
Lawrence Peelle #15369). Lawrence died c1664,
Elizabeth Cittiee Co VA, buried: Western Branch of
Elizabeth River. Lawrence Peelle* my 9th
g.grandfather #15368 that was born1601 in the
British Kingdom, England, His town of birth is
unknown or is the person he married as his wife. As
there are no ship records to support that he was
traveling with his wife it stand to reason he met
his mate after he arrived in the Virginia Colony.
Lawrence established a household on Western Branch
of the Elizabeth River in Elizabeth Cittiee Co in
VA. He died sometimes after the year 1664.

In the "Handy Book on Genealogist" you can find
information about the original Elizabeth Cittie
County that was renamed and changed to New Norfolk
Co. In the year 1637 New Norfolk was next changed to
Lower Norfolk Co. During that same year the "Lower"
was dropped from the name and it became Norfolk
County. A portion of this same area in 1963 was
renamed and called Chesapeake City. Prior to the
present name the same area changed names four
different times.

DEPARTURE FROM ENGLAND---Lawrence Peele sailed from
England December 1620 on the ship Margaret & John
with a total of 85 persons. The ship arrived five
months later at Norfolk in late April or early May
1621. The ship was under the command of Captain
James Chester. Records from the "London Company"
listed in their 1624 muster a Lawrence Peale. He was
given as being 23 years of age and living in
Elizabeth Cittie County, Virginia Colony. A friend
by the name of William Smith was living in the
household with him at that time. William was listed
as 30 years of age and had arrived aboard the ship
"Jacob" in 1624. The combined inventory of Lawrence
and William was four barrels of corn, two Brussels
of peas. 300 count of fish, 1 house, 2 pieces of
arms, 6 pounds of power and 6 pounds of lead. From
the inventory one must assume they were fisherman,
farmer, trader, hunter or combinations of these.

CREDIT DUE HORACE PEELE--- Extensive information
regarding The Lawrence Peelle family came from
Horace B Peele <hppel@bdirect.net> 12806 Chateau
Forest, San Antonia TX 78230. Credit goes to him
exclusively for all the information found herein
especially for the first five generations of this
Peele family.

SPANISH ATTACK--- The ship on which Lawrence
traveled according to The London Company Records
carried it through the Lesser Antilles. It was here
they met up in port with two other ships that were
flying the Dutch flags. Later after all of them they
had put to sea the two other ships struck their
Dutch colors and then advanced the Spanish colors.
After a battle of over six hours until their smaller
ship beat off the Spanish attackers and ended the
battle when they had succeeded in killed their
Captains. Ten members of the ship Margaret and John
were killed and twenty others were wounded. This sea
fight was quite an event and a long account was
printed in The London Newspapers in 1621

VIRGINIA COLINY---The period of 1620-21 was one of
disaster for many of the immigrants in the new
Colony of Virginia. The census taken in 1620 gives
the population as 887 persons. However only 603 were
living in Virginia Colony in the spring of 1621.
This was the year that our Lawrence arrives there.
This must have been a much kinder year for the
members of the colony as 1501 people were now living
in Virginia. Lawrence also survived the Indian
attack by Chief Opechancanough that was led on the
Colonist and massacred some 347 people.

No record is found as to who Lawrence Peelle married
or the name of his wife. Record shows that there
were five descending generations where each son was
given the name of Robert Peelle. Lawrence Peelle
#15368 was my (Pete Austin #1) 9th great
grandfather. Court records show that he owned
property in Elizabeth Cittie Co, Virginia on the
Western Branch of the Elizabeth River. This same
area became the present County of Norfolk. This area
is sandwiched next to Nansemond County that was
formed in 1637 from Upper Norfolk County when a
portion of County of Princess Anne was added. Data
on Nansemond County can now be found in the
courthouse located in Suffolk, VA. 23434. The
present Princess Anne County is located due east of
Norfolk County and continues to the shores of the
Atlantic Ocean. The eastern boundary of that county
started at the Chesapeake Bay and extends to the
Currituck Sound to the south. All three of these
counties border and join on the North Carolina State
Line. Many of my descendants entered "The Colony"
through this area of Norfolk VA.

TIDEWATER VA---The first settlers sailed into the
Chesapeake Bay pass what is now the cities of
Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News via way of The
Hampton Roads Waterway. They first sailed up the
inlet into the mouth of the James River to establish
the Jamestown Colony. Many of the settler that
landed in Jamestown and the Tidewater area later
migrated southward into what is currently known as
North Carolina. Most of my ancestors migrated
through Norfolk before settling mainly in Bertie,
Martin, Edgecombe, Halifax and Northampton Counties.
Later they moved west into Tenn, KY, SC, GA, Texas,
etc. I now have relatives that now live in all four
corners of the United States.

RETURNING BACK HOME--- It should be noted that the
trend reversed itself during World War II when
thousands of families from North Carolina returned
and went northward again to Newport News, Norfolk
and Portsmouth, Virginia to work at defense jobs at
military bases, shipyards, etc, during World War II.
Many of these returnees stayed in Virginia after the
end of the conflict and enjoyed a new standard of
living that they did not have when they lived in
North Carolina. They migrated to the tidewater
mainly from small towns and rural areas in the
Carolina's. For many of them it had become their
Promise Land. This is the same area around the
Tidewater Area that our ancestors left in
1600''s.and 1700's for a better life when they
headed south. The saying "You can't keep them down
on the farm after visiting Broad Street in Norfolk"
made this reverse migration a reality.

THE MOVEMENT SOUTH--- The earlier settlers who
migrated from Virginia usually went BY sailboat to
Edenton, North Carolina. Later after the pole roads
had developed and a ferry or a bridge had been
constructed they could travel across the new
territory mush easier. The paths later became trails
that were later made into roads as they were
constructed throughout the territory These Trails
traveled south as they went through what is now
Currituck County. Currituck was made a County in
1670 from a part of the Albemarle Prescient. They
continued through Camden County that was formed in
1677 from Pasquotank County. Pasquotank was created
in 1670 from a part of the original area of
Albemarle Prescient. Travelers next moved south
through Perquimans County [1670] that was also
formed from the original Albemarle Prescient. Next
they would enter Chowan County [1670] that was also
formed from Albemarle County.

To help research your ancestors it is very helpful
to known when and where they settled. With the many
changes over the years it is important that you can
know which county the historic records are now kept.

POLE ROADS---A Pole Road was constructed from eight
feet poles cut from 4 or 5 inch trees and placed
crosswise in muddy areas along the road that started
in Norfolk and ran across the Tide Water Area before
crossing the Albemarle sound by ferry and then
continued to the Governor's Mansion in New Bern NC.
Settlers or travelers went first by horseback; Later
with the improved paths into roads the cart, wagon
and stagecoach flowered. When traveling from the
tidewater area to New Bern it was necessary that
they crossed by a ferry over the Albemarle Sound to
Mackey's Landing near Plymouth or go across the
smaller Chowan River to The Eden House Landing in
Bertie County. You could also make this trip by
taking the western route when they traveled through
Gates county. Gates was formed in 1779 when they
divided and split off part of Chowan-Hertfort and
Perquimans Counties who were the original parent
counties. The trail continued across Hertfort Co
[1759] that was first a portion of Bertie, Chowan,
Northampton and Gates.

NEW FRONTIER--- After Land grants became available
from the Crown and the eight Lord Proprietors
settlers scrambled to seek their fortune along the
frontier. The more settlers the Crown convince to
develop the frontier the quicker they would
discourage the Indians from living there. The land
cost the Crown nothing but the need to supply
soldiers was expensive. Let the settlers do the
fighting to chase off the Indians. As the area
became safe from Indians the movement south
intensified more and more each year. The call for
cheap land beckoned them to move southward and then
westward and start a new home. This migration
continued south into Bertie [1722] that was formed
from Chowan County. Later many immigrants moved into
Martin County Co. [1774] when it was divided from
Halifax and Tyrrell Counties. They moved into the
fertile black and flat sandy farmland of Edgecombe
Co. [1741] that originated from Bertie and Pitt
Counties in 1760. Pitt was formally Beaufort County.
To avoid the wider river barriers many went westward
and arrived in their destination by crossing by
ferry the upper reaches of the Chowan River at
Winton NC.

FERRY RIDE---If they departed from Edenton in Chowan
County the pioneers had the choice of crossing by
ferry over the Albemarle Sound eastward to Mackey's
Landing in Washington County that was formed in 1799
when it originated from the parent Tyrrell County,
Tyrrell [1729] was a division of Bertie, Chowan,
Currituck, Pasquotank and Martin Counties. If their
travel took them to Edenton they could also take the
Eden House Ferry across the Chowan River to Bertie
County.

EARLY HISTORY--- Reviewing our history: In 1585,
Queen Elizabeth of England named the "New World"
after herself, "Virginia [after the virgin queen]".
This area is now the Eastern United States of
America. In 1629, King Charles I of the Royal Crown
granted Sir Robert Heath the southern portion of the
Virginia's that started at the N.C. line and
included all of the area to the south and westward
(not knowing that it went to the Pacific Ocean).
This territory was called "The Providence of the
Carolina's" which was later referred to as "Land of
Charles". In 1663, King Charles II, granted this
area to eight of his favorite Nobles that assisted
him in defending his Crown and commissioned them
Lord Proprietors of The Territory. These Proprietors
divided the Carolina Region into three "Counties"
[1] Albemarle County which joined "The Virginia's"
[2] Clarden and [3] Albemarle and extended south.
The explored boundaries of Albemarle County stared
at what is known today as County of Currituck. This
area starts at a point at the Atlantic Ocean on the
Virginia line and then due south for 40 miles. then
90 degrees west for 40 miles, then due north back to
the Virginia border and then east to the starting
point. This area consisted of approximately 1600
square miles. A square mile contains 610 acres so
the area contained 976,000 acres. Some of this
territory included part of the present Currituck
Sound, Albemarle Sound and Chowan River that divides
Chowan and Bertie Counties. Around 1681 Albemarle
County [1663] was expanded and divided into three
Precincts: (1) Carteret Precinct that was later
named Pasquotank [1670] (formed from Precinct
Albemarle [1663] which was one of three original
counties), (2) Berkeley [1722] which later was
renamed Perquimans [1670] and (3) Shaftesbury [1722]
that later became Chowan. In 1670, Albemarle County
was expanded to four Precincts when they added
Currituck by dividing Carteret approximately into
one half. At that time there was no established
boundaries between the Virginia Colony and the
Carolina Providence. A disagreement occurred between
Virginia and Carolina over the boundaries as to whom
they could make grants and where they should pay
their taxes. The King in 1710 ordered a survey of
the boarder and decreed that each side must appoint
four surveyors to run a line to establish a boundary
between the Virginia Colony and the Providence of
the Carolina's. At this time the Virginia Colony
claimed some of the area south of this boarder. The
Great Dismal swamp exists here and it was almost
impossible to penetrate due to the swamp and heavy
undergrowth. The dissatisfied parties had no exact
line to go by until the survey was completed. Many
of these settlers had come there from the Tidewater
Area of Virginia and continued to maintain their
association with that part of the country. All
relatives, friends, official business transactions,
supplies and Indian protection came from the
Virginia Colony.

In 1712 the Carolina Province became a Royal Colony.
There was no major change in Albemarle County until
(5) Bertie Precinct [1722] was formed from the
western part of Chowan Precinct, (6) Tyrrell
Precinct [1729] was created from Bertie-Chowan-
Currituck-Pasquotank Precincts (7) Edgecombe
Precinct [1732] was formed from the Northwestern
portion of the Bertie Precinct. Located to the
south of Albemarle County was Bath County [1696]
formerly Archdale (discontinued in 1739) and
comprised of seven Precincts: Wickam [1705], name
changed to Hyde [1712], Pamptecough [1705] name
changed to Beaufort [1712] which was changed to
Carteret [1722] and originated from Craven [1712],
Onslow [1734], New Hanover [1729] and Bladen [1734].
The three original Counties (1) Albemarle to the
north, (2) Clarendon in the Cape Fear region and
Craven, South Carolina which included all the lands
to the south became extinct in 1739, when the Colony
changed from the County and Precincts System and the
jurisdiction became centralized and everything would
now become Counties under a single Colony
government. A more extensive account about the
development of each of the present 100 North
Carolina Counties is entered under my files under
Thomas Grimes #1800.

BIGGER --- From the very start when they moved over
paths and logging trails there grew a need for a
place for the traveler to stop and to quench his
thirst and stable his horses, get a hot meal and
rest his head upon a soft pillow while sleeping
beyond harms way in a dry bed for the night. It was
not long before someone came along with the answer.
They needed a location that was near the end of a
hard days travel. It was here that they built a
stopover place and called it a tavern. It did not
take to long before a store; horse stables, corral,
barbershop, blacksmith, horse traders, preacher and
others joined the tavern owner here the community
was now expanding to meet the growing need in that
area. Because of the towns development farmers came
and cleared the land to supply the produce, etc.
Here they started their homesteads. This stopover
was now becoming a growing community with many new
people arriving who were looking for a place where
they could have a new life and make a decent living.
They now joined those that were already there. It
was something like Matthews NC where I now live. The
town grew from a crossroads called the Stumptown
Depot where the train stopped weekly to pick up
lightwood stumps that were shipped to Wilmington
where they extracted pitch tar used in shipbuilding.
Matthews is now the second largest town of 17,506 in
Mecklenburg Co. We moved here in 1969 the population
was only 723. Where there were once fields and
wooded area there is nothing but solid row upon row
of houses beside houses stacked row after row of
nothing but houses. We moved here to get away from
the Jones. Now all the Jones has moved to Matthews.

I. Robert Peelle * - 8th g.grandfather, b.
c1635, Elizabeth Cittie Co VA (Norfolk Co). He
married unknown* (Wife:Robert Peelle #15370).
Robert died c1694, Nansemond Co VA. Robert was born
about 1635 in Elizabeth Cittie (City) VA. He
purchased property on the Western Branch of the
Elizabeth River adjoining Captain Tucker in 1856. In
1663 he with his son moved about 15 miles into
Nansemond Co. He settled on 100 acres on the "Mill
Run" which was part of Bennett's Creek. Data from VA
Land Patent Book 6, page 678 and recorded
Apr.30.1679. This area reported to have adjoined at
the south the property of Va Gov. Richard Bennett.
Both father and son thrived as farmers. When George
Fox came to Virginia he formed the Chuckatuck
Meeting House that was situated just across the
nearby Nansemond River. They both became Quakers. In
1679 Robert Peelle Sr and Junior bought an
additional 175 acres adjoining his property on
Bennett's Creek near the VA State Line. Robert 1st
is my (Pete Austin #1) 8th great grandfather. In the
will of Gov. Richard Bennett, Nansemond Co VA March
15, 1674 probated Aug 3, 1676 in England when he
named Robert Peele as his "overseer". Records found
in the VA. Higher Court dated 1670-1696, p.193 Nov.
13,1694, gives Robert Peele as the Justice of Peace,
Nansemond Co VA with the Power of Attorney by James
Alexander of Nansemond Co VA to Gov. Alexander
Lillington of NC. This information can from Horace
Peele.

Jarrat about 1678 the widow of Thomas Jarrat. After
his marriage to Sarah he moved to the property of
his new wife that was about two miles from his
fathers plantation. Sarah had inherited 134 acres
located on the bank of the Nansemond River near
Sleepy Hole. Here he operated a ferry crossing the
river to Colefield Point. In 1702 the Virginia
record shows that a ferry operated from the property
of Robert Peelle. It is assumed that he was the
operator of that ferry because it was located on his
property. The fare was six pence for each person and
a shilling if they had a horse. Robert and Sarah had
four known issues: William, Robert, Ephrain and
Joseph. Robert Peelle Sr #15372 was my (Pete Austin
#1) 7th great grandfather. Sarah: Sarah was the

Bertie Co. NC. He married Milley Higgs*, b. 1752,
Bertie Co NC, d. bef 1841, Bertie Co NC. Josiah
died 1843, Bertie Co. NC, buried: Unknown. My 5th
great grandfather Josiah Peelle Lived on the Moore
Road that went from Lewiston towards Kelford. This
gravel road went from the intersection of the
Lewiston-Aulander highway to the Harrell siding road
that came from Kelford. He lived to be 92 years of
age. Josiah had nine issues that were born from
c1775 until 1803.His second child William Peele
#14033 was my 4th g.grandfather that was born 1780.
Josiah's #15148 father was born in Nansemond Co Va
and moved to Bertie Co NC where he raised his
family. He settled on land that is now near Rhodes
Place Crossroad located about three miles north of
Lewiston. The crossroad is about three miles
northeast from Kelford (my [Pete Austin #1] birth
place) that is also about three miles from the town
of Aulander.

This is the same area that Josiah Peelle #15148
(b1751) my g.g.g.g. Grandfather, William Peele
#14033 (b1780) who married first Lucy Rhoads (two
known female issues) and then married 2nd Sarah
Young #16442. These were my g.g.g parents. They had
a son Jarrod Peele #105 who married Louisa "Lura"
Bazemore #532 who are my 2nd great grandparents.
Their son James W Peele #92 (b.1837) m. Elizabeth
Watson Rawls #93, both were my g.grandparents, Their
daughter Mary Debra Arabella Peele #39 (1872) m.
Jacob Lafayette Austin #40, who are my grandparents.
Their child who is my father, Hobart Garrett Austin
#10 was born here in the Rhodes Place Crossroad
area, as were all of the other children. My g.g.g
grandfather John Austin # (b.1805) and his son
who was my g.g.grandfather Uriah Austin migrated
from Nansemond Co Va to Rhodes Place Crossroad,
Bertie Co NC where his son Jacob was born. My 5th
great grandfather John Rawls #624 (b.1710) moved
from Nansemond Co VA to Bertie Co. NC and settle in
this area near Rhodes Place Crossroads. John's son
who is my g.g.g.g. Grandfather William Rawls II #209
(b.1737) was born here in Bertie, Jonas Rawls #207
(b. 1760) who was my g.g.g. Grandfather was buried
in Rawls Cemetery near the Peele School on the
William Moore Road in Mulberry Grove section, His
son Moore Rawls #213 (b.1811) who was my
g.g.grandfather and had a daughter Elizabeth Watson
Rawls #93 (b.1844) that married my g.grandfather
James W Peele #92 listed above, both were born here
at Rhodes Place Crossroads area. From this data you
can see that my roots are deep in and around this
Crossroad.

Josiah Peelle #15148 wrote his Will that was dated
the 6th day of November 1841. Text of this wills
follows: In the name of God, Amen. I Josiah Peelle
Senior of Bertie Co, State of NC, being in sound
mind, memory and understanding make and ordain this
my Last Will and Testament in manner and form
following. Viz. Item the 1st. I give and bequest to
my son Josiah Peelle Jr all my lands lying between
Walton (Wattom Swamp) Pocosin and Cashie Branch it
being the land which my dwelling house stands on,
also one black walnut table and one hand mill, to
him and his heirs and assigns forever. Also one bed
and furniture. Item the 2nd. I give and bequest to
my so James Peele the land whereon he now lives,
also the Masons track containing one hundred acres
more or less to him, his heirs and assigns forever.

Item third, I give and bequest all my property not
herein given away to be equally divided between (1).
Dempsey Peelle Heirs (Dempsey died 1838), (2).
William Peelle Heirs (William died 1829 was my g
g.g.grandfather), (3]. Mary Cox (married Ezekiel
Cox). (4) Elizabeth Cox (married John Cox), (5)
Lynda Cox (married George W Cox all of which were
Cox brothers), (6). Josiah Peelle and (7). James
Peelle to them, their heirs and assigned forever.
Lastly, I appoint constitute and appoint Josiah
Peele Junr and William Cox Executors to this my last
Will and Testament hereby revoking all former Wills
by me herefore made in witness whereof. I have set
my hand and affixed my seal the 6th day of November
1841. "X" mark with Josiah Peelle Senr. Witnessed by
Richard Cox and George W Cox. From the entries in
Josiah's will they would have lived in the middle of
the Cox clan. Three daughters married a Cox and two
Cox son-in laws witnessed Josiah #15148 will.
Daughters Judith #15311 and Cilia #15318 were not
named in their father's will but were given as
children in the Horace Peele data sent to me on 08-
11-1998.

William's sister Amelia (Emeline) married Zachob
Burden (called Jaddock) as given in a deed as
recorded in Bertie Co in 1862.

(a) Exum Peele, b. 1774, Bertie Co NC. He
married (1) Rhody Harrell, 11-08-1804, in Bertie Co
NC, b. c1774, Bertie Co NC, (daughter of Arthur
Harrell and Unknown Wife Arthur Harrell). He married
(2) Elizaberth Wilkes, 05-03-1831, b. c1811. Exum
died c02-1857, Bertie Co NC. Exum was my gr,
gr,great Uncle a son of Josiah Peelle and Milly
Higgs my 4th great grand parents.

(b) Dempsey Peelle, b. 1775/6, Bertie Co. NC.
He married Judith Baker Seay. Dempsey died 1838,
near Kelford. Bertie Co. NC. In his father's will
the heirs of Dempsey were named as receiving a share
of this estate. Additional Data on Dempsey came to
me from one of his descendants, Wayne Modlin
formerly from Woodville, NC. And a cousin of mines
(Pete #1). Please note that only female children
were named as being heirs in Dempsey's father's
Josiah Peelle will. Were there other issues not
mentioned? There is a BIG question in this data, as
Dempsey's children were not born until 1800 when he
was 44 years of age. Dempsey #15310 would have been
approximately 61 years of age when his youngest
child was born.

I do know and have the data that one of these listed
children (Eliza Lucinda Peele) had descendants that
connected to the Minton family and that entry is
correct. I have received E-mail correspondence with
John W Peele (johnbear@theriver.com) on 12-12-1999
that gives his ancestor as a Dempsey Peele (his
g.g.g.grandfather) b c1755 and died 1811 and his
research reflect that he had sons Mills, Miles and
Elisha as proven in court records found in Edgecombe
Co NC. as shown below. In Edgecombe Co we find the
following Deeds: Deed Book # 14, page 196 we find
Mills Peele and Miles Peele were sons of Dempsey
Peele, decd.,Oct. 1811, In DB 14-page 189 Elisha
Peele and Miles Peele were sons of Dempsey Peele,
decd.,Oct.1811, In DB 14-208 Elisha Peele and Mills
Peele were sons of Dempsey Peele, decd., Oct 1811.
In DB 19-268 we find the Division of real estate of
a Willian Drake, Decd, that was devised by him to
his son, Levi Drake, which land descended to the
following: (1) Mills Peel and wife [Delilah]; (2)
William and George Drake, Oct 29, 1829. DB 21-269
Delilah Peel was wife of Miles Peel, April 2, 1834.
DB 21-459 Mills Peel and wife, Delilah, of Burke Co
GA., sold land, Jan 3, 1835. From this data his
g.g.grandfather Mills Peele b.c1784 married Delilah
Drake (Please note: that my g.g.g.grandmother was
Martha Denton Drake b. 1784 probably in Nash Co NC
and d. 1854 Edgecombe Co.NC. Not known if she was
related to the Delitha Drake given above) and moved
from Edgecombe County to Burke Co. GA.

Important is that John's ancestor Dempsey as record
as of date would not be the same as my relative
Dempsey Peelle #15310 because the death of John's
Dempsey was listed as d.1811 and my Dempsey has
children born after his death. However, there still
leaves a big question regarding my Dempsey and his
age when his children were born. It would appear
that it was at a rather late time in the normal
reproductive age of a person when they was over 60
years in life, especially for a women. With no real
proof, it could be that his first wife died after
given birth to a son Dempsey Jr (plus other?) and
his father then married a younger woman Judith Baker
Seay as his second wife and had five daughters as
given in my data base. Additional info in my file
shows that Delilah Drake Peele was the daughter of
Levi Drake #7593 who was the son of William #7591
who was the s/o Lazarus #7602 who was the s/o Thomas
#7600 b c1700.

(c) Judith "Jodah" Peelle, b. c1779. She
married Isom Harrell, 01-01-1800, in Bertie Co NC.
Marriage records gave name as Judah Peele.

(d) William H Peele 3rd GGF, b. c1780, Rhodes
Place Crossroad, Bertie Co.NC. He married (1) Lucy
Rhodes, 08-11-1800, b. c 1780? Probably Rhodes Place
Cross roads, d. c1805-7. He married (2) Sarah
Young* g.g.g.grandmother, c1810, b. 1792, NC,
(daughter of John Young* 4th grandfather and Martha
Averitt* 4th Great Grandmother) d. aft 1850 census.
William died 11-1829, Now Snakebite Township Bertie
Co. NC. My first history on my Peele and Austin
family came from Jesse Bazemore Parker, my (Pete
Austin #1) 2nd cousin-once removed. Her husband
Joseph Wiley Parker was a Superior Court Judge. She
was my 5th grade teacher at Roxobel-Kelford School
in 1937.

William Peele was my g.g.g.grandfather. William
married 1st Lucy Rhodes and had two daughters. The
Rhodes Place Crossroad probably named for Lucy's
parents. This is the area where William and other
Peele's were born & buried. My g.g.g. Grandmother
Sarah "Sally" Rhodes #643 on my mother's side is
also believed to have been in this area of Bertie
Co. and maybe was a relative to this same family.
She married Thomas / Robert Cherry #642 from Bertie
who was reported by Edna Cook in her book as a son
of Solomon Cherry #801 who wrote his will in 1774
and died in Bertie 1777.

Solomon Cherry owned land on Cashie Swamp. The
Cashie River starts at the Albemarle Sound and
continues westward and passes next to Windsor, NC
where it then becomes Cashie Swamp. This same
waterway continues westward and now becomes Cashie
Swamp. As it travels approximately 15 miles it
continues close to the Rhodes Place Crossroad
Community. The Cashie swamp then continues west
until it splits into two branches with the north
branch being called Wahtom Swamp and it continues
pass Harrell's Siding and ends near Teaster shack
community. The other branch of Cashie Swamp runs
near the old town limits of Kelford. A small bridge
crosses the roads that is about a quarter-mile from
the Frederick Arthur and Irene Cobb Ruffin's home
and just pass the Black Baptist Church on the right
side. This branch of the Cashie then passes under
the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad trestle behind the
Brown property and splits again with the left branch
passing under the Seaboard Airline Railroad Trestle.
This was one of our favorites swimming holes. It
continued southward and now is called Brown's Branch
where it crosses the state highway 308 between
Kelford and the Roxobel-Kelford High School.

It was here that the WPA (we joked and called call
them "We Poke Along") constructed a new bridge for
the school children to walk over the now much
smaller stream. Before this we walked in the then
gravel road back and forth to school. It was on
this very new bridge that my brother James Louis
Austin, P.T."Pete" Roane, George T.B. Johnson (now
Doctor) and Roland "Tid" Knox played out the
storybook event of "Billy Goat Gruff" that they had
read that day in their school's classroom. P.T was
selected to be the "Troll" and was instructed to
challenge the "Billy Goat Gruff" when they
approached the bridge. This part of "Daddy Goat
Gruff" was played by James Louise and the" Mother
Goat" played by George and the "Kid Goat "by Tid. On
that day there had been a heavy freeze during the
night and a thin layer of ice had formed on the
water that cold December day. When the Troll came up
from under the bridge to challenge the goats...much
to P.T's surprise they all charged him at once and
knocked him flat on his back and he went crashing
off the bridge and into the icy water. P.T was not
hurt but he was soaking wet and there was a danger
of him freezing, so each goat had to share a piece
of their clothing to keep him warm on this very cold
day. Roxobel-Kelford School was separated between
Kelford and Roxobel by about one mile each way.

This event took place around half way from the
school at Brown's Branch on the way to Kelford.
Perry Roane (Kelford Postmaster) the father of
"P.T." thought it was very funny event but his
mother Vivian Tyler was really up-set as she
realized that he could have gotten frost bit or
could even catch his death or a bad cold etc. The
other branch of Cashie Swamp (given on old map as
Wattom Swamp) passed a mile north of Kelford, near
Harrell's Siding and ends near the Tester Shack
area.

The Peele family name was recorded in court records
and spelled Peal, Peellee, Peelle Peele and Peel. I
have made note each time when the name was changed
and stated that it was different from that of their
parent's name.

Judge Joseph Wiley Parker was the son of George and
Cora Parker that lived about 600 feet from my
parent's home. We lived on what is now Norfleet Ave
and they lived behind us on Church Street. Their
home was across a small field (owned by my cousin
Joseph Carton Cherry Sr #1807. The property was at
that time cultivated by Mr Bob Shoulars the step-
grandfather of my sister-in-law Hazel Roane Bland
#140). From the records of Joseph's wife Jesse
Bazemore Parker she stated that her husband Judge
Joseph descended from Emily or Milly Matthews who
married Charles Russell Jr. Emily or Milly was the
aunt of Martha Jane Matthews who was my
g.g.g.grandmother who married Uriah Austin. The
Peele, Matthews, Young, Rhodes, Rawls and Austin
families all lived at one tine near Rhodes Place
Crossroad Community that is approximately three
miles from Lewiston, Aulander and Kelford.

In William Peele's (my g.g.g.grandfather) Will that
was recorded in Bertie Co NC Nov.1829 and dated
Oct.28 1829 is as follows: In the name of God, Amen:
I William Peele, being of sound and disposing mind
but weak in boddy, do make and publish this my last
will and test. First, I give to my loving wife Sally
(Young) Peele the following articles. (Viz) one
horse, her choice of, three cows and calves, ten
ewes and lambs, three sows and pigs, her choice in
cows, sows and ewes. Fifty barrels of corn. Two beds
& furniture, one loom, one chest, one table, one
wool wheel, one lining wheel, three cedar barrels,
my kitchen furniture, one yoak of oxen & cart, ten
blade stacks of fodder and as much meat as will be
sufficient to serve she and her family for one year.
I do also lind her one-half of the land and
plantation whereon I now live and three Negro
slaves, namely Richard, Charlotte and Willis, during
her natural life, and at her death to be equally
divided between all my children. I give also one
sidesaddle and bridle to my loving wife SALLY PEELE.

Secondly, I give to my son JARROR PEELE, one mule
named Jack, and bridle and saddle. Thirdly, I give

remain in the hands of my Executors until my son
Jarrod arrives at the age of twenty one years, and
then to be equally between all my children, and
their heirs forever. And lastly, I nominate and
appoint my friend Humphrey H Hardy and Jesse
Averitt, (my g.g.g.uncle) my Executors to this Last
Will and Testament, revoking all others heretofore
made & published this to be my only will and
testament given under my hand and seal this 28th day
of October AD 1829. "X" William Peele. Baliss H Bond
Witnessed: (Baliss married his wife's sister)

In William's will he names sons JARROD # 105, (my
g.g.g.grandfather)

WILLIAM #14033, and his spouse (wife Sarah) Sally
(Young) Peele #100 (his second wife). William wrote
his will Oct 28,1829 and recorded it Nov 1829 and
his son Jarrod was not of legal age at the time when
he wrote his will. In data from Horace Peele he
names two additional daughters: Nancy Caroline Peele
(# 16439) b.c1808 and Marina E Peele (# 16440)
b.c1812 that married (Mr) Casper. No other
information available? Additional information came
from Wayne Modlin listed a son named Andrew Peele
#103 that married 1st, Rowena Baker (no know issue),

2nd Louisa Pritchard #534 and had a son Drew (Andrew
Jr) Peele # 15434 that married Mary Morris #15430.
The children were Oakley #15136, William "Willie" #
102. Allie #15438 and Cohen Bailey Peele #15440.

Information obtained from William's will was that he
gave salves, personal items and one-half lifetime
rights in house he now lived in, land and plantation
[plantation was house and land with over 100 acres]
to his wife. He gave personal items to his two-named
son's Jarrod and William (no other data except he
died c Aug 1859). He stated in this will that the
remaining estate was to be divided between all my
children and their heirs forever after all his debts
were paid. He did not name any children except
Jarrod and William probably because all of the other
children were under age at the time of his death.

In Deed Book MM pg 376-377, Feb 28,1862Sarah Peele
and William H Peele is the names of Amelia Burden
and Jaddock Burden. This is the first time I have
seen the middle initial as "H" for William Peele.
Lucy: Lucy was the first wife of William Peele. She
probable died young in life because William married
2nd Sarah Young and had seven additional children
between 1808 and 1825. Lucy Rhodes was probably a
member of that family for which Rhodes' Place
Crossrood received that name. The Peele family was
also from this same area in Bertie. Hopefully more
info can be found on Lucy Rhodes and her family.
Sarah: Sarah Young #16442 was the daughter of John
Young #217 and wife Martha Averitt (Young) #218.
Sarah was named in her mother's will probated in
Bertie. In the 1850 census she is listed at age 58.
Living in household #958 with four of her children:
Drew Peel age 28, Male, Farmer born in NC, James W,
Peele age 26 Male, Farmer, NC, Amilia G. age 24
Female, NC, Celia E. age 21 Female NC.

(e) Mary Peelle, b. c1785, Bertie Co. NC.
She married Ezekial Smith Cox, 09-25-1806, b. bef
1770-1774, NC, (son of Benjamin Cox and Mary (Wife:
Benjamin Cox #17187)) d. c1830-1840, Bertie Co NC.
Mary died Bertie Co NC. Ezekial: Ezekial was the
oldest know child of Benjamin Cox. He married Mary
Peelle the daughter of my 4th great grandfather
Josiah Peelle. His two brothers: John and George
also married sisters to that of his wife.

Ezekial Smith Cox owned property jointly with John
Crittinton Tynes that was sold in Bertie Co in 1880.
John C Tynes was the Son of Wes Tynes and Pannella
Cox that married as her second husband John Johnson
Jilcott.

Ezekiel S. Cox was brother to George W. Cox and
Lydia Peelle the parents of Samuel Cox. Samuel had a
sister Penelope Cox. I do not have additional
information if she married. Could she be the 1st
wife of Wes Tynes and later married 2nd John Johnson
Jilcott? I (Pete Austin) have extensive records on
both the Cox and Jilcott families from Roxobel,
Bertie Co NC

(f) Elizabeth "Betsey" Peelle, b. c1788,
Bertie Co. NC. She married John Cox, 11-19-1804, in
Bertie Co. NC, b. bef 1760-1770, NC, (son of
Benjamin Cox and Mary (Wife: Benjamin Cox #17187))
and d. bef 1830-1840, NC. Elizabeth died aft 1850,
Bertie Co NC. John: Very little is known about the
descendants of John and Elizabeth Peelle. They are
listed as having a daughter Mary Cox with N.A.I.A.
(no additional information available).

(g) Lydia Peelle, b. 1802, Rhodes Place
Crossroad, Bertie Co. NC. She married George W Cox,
b. bef 1784-1790, NC, (son of Benjamin Cox and Mary
(Wife: Benjamin Cox #17187)) d. bef 1830-1840,
Bertie Co NC. Lydia died bef 1850-1860, Bertie Co
NC. Data by my cousin and researcher Horace Peele
was quoted that our cousin Lydia Peelle marring
Samuel Cox. On the other hand another cousin of mine
Doug Acree doubts this marriage because there is no
Bertie Co census record to support this union. Also
there is no land or estate recorded to show that a
Samuel Cox was living in Bertie Co around 1800 to
1830.

Lydia is first found in the 1840 Bertie Co Census
and in the 1850 census at age 48. I found in the
marriage records where a W. S. Cox witnessed the
marriage of Lizzie M Bunch to Andrew J Joynor in
Lewiston on 20th July 1891. Not known what the S
stands for in his name W.S.Cox. Doug's records show
that Lydia Peelle married George Cox the 3rd son of
Benjamin Cox. From this union their first child
Reuben Cox was born c1819 in Bertie Co. Lydia Peelle
that married George Cox was born c1802. Lydia was
the daughter of my 4th Great grandparents Josiah
Peelle and his wife Milly Higgs. Records show that
Benjamin's three sons married three daughters of
Josiah and Milly Peelle.

Ezekial Cox married Mary PEELLE September 25, 1806
in Bertie Co. His brother John Cox married as his
second wife Elizabeth PEELLE who was also a daughter
of Josiah and Milly Peelle. Their brother George Cox
in turn married Lydia PEELLE also a daughter of
Josiah and Milly Peelle. From this union of George
and Lydia there was a son Samuel Cox who was born
c1822. Their son Samuel Cox married as his 3rd bride
Mary Moore Rawls who was my great grand aunt.

In the Jilcott records Permelia Cox was born 1807 in
Bertie Co. and researches believe she may have been
a daughter of Samuel Cox. Horace Peele in his
records stated this Lydia Peelle was the daughter of
Josiah and Milly Peelle.

The big question remains? Who was this Samuel Cox
#15322? Was he related to the Benjamin Cox family
who was the father of the three brothers that
married the three Peelle sisters? More research
needed to solve this problem. Can you help?

Information sent to me by Horace Peele on 6/28/00
does not include any information that Lydia married
Samuel Cox. I concur that it is my finding that our
Lydia Peele did not marry Samual Cox but married
George W Cox. Please note that George W Cox was one
of the two persons that witnessed the will of his
father-in-law Josiah Peelle. George: George married
Lydia Peelle the daughter of my 4th great
grandparents Josiah and Millie Higgs. A son Samuel
Cox married as his 3rd wife my great grand aunt Mary
Moore Rawls who was the daughter of my 2nd great
grandfather Moore Rawls from Woodville NC. This
union produced one known issue Henry F Cox with
N.A.I.A.

in Bertie Co NC, b. 02-1816, Bertie Co NC, d. Bertie
Co NC. James died aft 1866, Bertie Co NC. Emily:
Name given as Emerline in census per Roscoe Peele.
In 1900 census named Emily was living with her son-
in-law William Livermon. She is listed as widow and
the mother of 14 children with 5 living on that
date. I have recorded 8 from his 2nd marriage by
Emily to James B Peele, a cousin of mine (Pete), and
three by Harriet Acree who was his 1st wife. This is
a total of eleven from both unions. No record of the
two unknown children.

of John Norsworth and Issabelle Parker) d. 10-17-
1802, Northampton NC. John died 01-22-1804,
Northampton Co NC. John Jellard Peelle was a child
of Robert Peelle Jr #15250 and Edith Edwards and
moved to Northampton Co.NC. Some later living in
Tarboro, Roxobel, Lewiston, etc. John Jellard Peelle
descendants also married into the Austin family. A
3rd granddaughter Lucille Peele (now spelled with
one "L") married my Uncle Archie Lee Austin who was
brother to my father Hobart Garrett Austin.

Date of marriage is recorded is found in clerks
office, Isle of Wight VA. Hugh Buckner Johnson
relates to John Peelle that although a quaked he was
apparently a Patriot during the Revolution War
because records show that Robert Smythe, Paymaster
of the Army in North Carolina allowed 118.6.0 pounds
for supplies since December 1775.
