Newspaper Clipping-February 1884
                               Dave Hodge
Poor Dave Hodge was shot and instantly kiledon last Thursday at 1 o'clock,
about 1/4 mile this side of Delay, or possibly so far. The perpetrator of the
deed was hid close to the road and shot him off his mule while driving his
wagon. We understand several parties have been arrested on suspicion and that
a commiting trial will be had before Esq. Grimes, to-morrow and therefore we
forebear any comment at present. The remains of Mr. Hodge were brought on
this side of the river and were interred at Bethel Church cemetery on Friday.
A large concourse of mourning friends and relatives had assembled and after
the burial services was performed by Rev. Wash Smith, the last remains of all
that was left of Dave Hodge, were returned to mother earth and to the God who
gave. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and relatives
of the deceased.

Additional Comments:
This clipping was found by my mother, Lilah Dayle Hodge Cole, in an old trunk
belonging to my maternal grandmother, Addie Pearl Parham Hodge, after her
death.
My maternal grandfather was Oliver Wiley Hodge, and this article is about his
father, James David "Dave" Hodge, who was killed when my grandfather was three
years old, and was riding with his father when it happened.
I am using the exact wording of the article.
