James M. Hopkins, land holder and stock dealer; is a native of Maryland,
the son of Rigby and Mary (Aull) Hopkins.  Mr. Hopkins was born April 7,
1815, and lived in his native state until the year 1845.  He then came to
Boone county, Mo., where he settled upon a farm until 1854; he then came
to Saline county, and in 1857 came to Lafayette county, Mo., here has 
engaged in merchandising for twenty years.  He is the owner of 800 acres
of Lafayette county's best land.  In 1857 he was married to Miss Ann
Corrin, an English lady, who died November 9, 1876.  Mr. Hopkins is a
public spirited man and a strong man in the Methodist Episcopal church,
south, of which he is a devout member.
