Edmund J. Connely [PHOTO]

Edmund J. Connely, who inspired the local legal community by practicing law for almost 40
years despite a severe case of cerebral palsy, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000. He was
 65.

The Houma attorney was born with cerebral palsy, a disorder that usually stems from central
nervous system damage and is characterized by spastic paralysis. His symptoms were pronounced,
with his body hunched and his head cocked to one side. But, friends say, he never let his
physical handicap hold back his intelligence, work ethic and sense of humor.

"I just did what I had to do," Connely told The Courier in June 1999, when asked why he became
an attorney. Then he laughed and said, "I didn't want to go on welfare."

A native of Terrebonne Parish, he grew up in Bayou Dularge, then graduated from St. Francis de
Sales High School. He earned both his bachelor's and law degree from Louisiana State
University.

In 1961, Connely began his law practice in Houma. Throughout his career, he was involved in all
sorts of legal work. Recently, he handled collections, but still made occasional courtroom
appearances.

"I like the idea of a good argument," Connely said last year.

Connely's att
itude inspired others who were more physically fortunate, according to his cousin,
District Judge Edward Gaidry.

"He always had a determination to not let his handicap get in his way," Gaidry told The Courier
last year. "I'm proud to be his cousin."

Visitation was scheduled from 10 a.m. to funeral time today at Chauvin Funeral Home. Mass was
scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with interment in St. Eloi Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Frankie Jackson Connely of Houma; two sons, Andy and Damien
Connely, both of Houma; one daughter, Meeko Connely of Houma; two stepbrothers, Don L. and Guy
E. Chauvin, both of Houma; four stepsisters, Willie Lou Whitney, Carol Ann Lenox and Amy E.
Ourso, all of Houma, and Mina Jennusa of Belle Chase; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clerville Connely; his mother and stepfather, Estelle
Marmande Connely Chauvin and Roland Chauvin Sr.; one stepbrother, Roland R. Chauvin Jr.; and
his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Connely, and Mr. and Mrs. John J. Marmande.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United Cerebal Palsey Association,
710 Plaza, Suite 804, N.Y., N.Y. 10001.
