NEWSPAPER PIONEER WALLS, EX-OWNER OF COURIER, DIES AT 90
By LEBRON MILES Courier City Editor

          B. CORMAGE WALLS
    B. Carmage Walls, a former co-owner of The Courier and scores of other
newspapers across the South, Southwest and Midwest, has died at his home in
Houston.
Walls, who died Sunday, was 90.
He was part of a 10-person group who bought The Courier, then a
biweekly publication, in July 1970. Two months later, the newspaper began
publishing a daily edition. Walls and the only other original partner,
longtime Publishe
r Ray Dill, sold The Courier to its current owner, the New
York Times Co., in December 1980.
"He was a very benevolent man," said Dill, now retired. The people he
touched benefitted from his work. He wasn't a selfish man, very giving."
Dill pointed to The Walls Scholarship at Nicholls State University, widely
recognized as the most prestigious journalism scholar-ship at the college, as
an example.
The scholarship trust started after Walls and his family donated $100,000
to the Nicholls College Foundation in 1977 and pledged another $100,000 over
the next 25 years.
Since then, more than 100 students have shared in $159,000 of scholarship
money, according to Alfred Delahaye, professor emeritus at Nicholls'
Department of Mass Communication.
Outside of south Louisiana, Walls was best known for opposing
then-segregationist Alabama Gov. George Wallace in the 1960s. Walls, owner of
the state capital newspaper, the Montgomery Advertiser, removed four pages of
so-called "Negro news" from the paper and incorporated it into the "regular"
news space.
"There was a moral reason for doing this,' he said in an interview years
ago. "All men are equal."
Walls took simuIar steps at newspapers in Charleston, S.C.; Macon,
Ga.; and Jackson, Miss.
Walls was born in 1908 in Crisp County, Ga., but he grew up in Flo
rida.
His newspaper career began after he quit high school at age 15 and went to
work stuffing comics into the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel.
He worked his way through the ranks in Orlando, then went to the Macon
(Ga.) Telegraph and News. In 1940, he became publisher of that paper at age
32.
Six years later, he bought his first newspaper in 1946 - the Gadsden(Ala.)
Times. He became the leader of Walls Investment Co. and Southern Newspapers
Inc. In 60 years in the business, his companies owned news papers in
Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama and Oklahoma and Kansas.
Walls is survived by his wife, Martha Ann "Molly" Williams Walls; his
daughter, Lissa W. Vahldiek; and two sons, B. Cooper Walls and C. Lee Walls.
There will be a memorial service Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Martin's
Episcopal Church in Houston. The funeral will be private.
