001268	Vondenstein - Hubert Vondenstein, Judge Who Died Sunday After Fighting A Six-Year Battle Against
Cancer, Is Described By Colleagues As The Most Respected Judge In Jefferson Parish's 24th Judicial
District Court. Chief Judge Ernest Richards Said Monday That Vondenstein Was 'Universally Admired By
All The Other Judges In This District. He Was A Superior Person And A Fine Judge And Administrator. We
Will Miss Him.' Vondenstein, 61, Was Praised Both As A Man Of Personal Integrity And As A Hard-Working,
Fair Jurist. District Attorney John Mamoulides Said Vondenstein 'Was A Very Competent Judge Whom I Had
The Utmost Respect For.' Even When Ill, Mamoulides Said, Vondenstein Put In Long, Hard Hours On The
Bench. 'He Was A Very Dedicated Public Official.' The Judge Had Three Cancer Surgeries In Six Years,
The Most Recent Being Last Month In Houston To Remove A Tumor From His Back. After Initial
Complications, He Was Reported To Be Improving And Was Looking Forward To Returning To The Bench In A
Few Weeks, His Office Staff Said. But Complications Developed Again, And The Judge Died Sunday At East
Jefferson General Hospital In Metairie. Retired Orleans Parish Judge Alvin Oser, Who Has Been Serving
Jefferson Parish On An Ad Hoc Basis, Had Been Filling In For Vondenstein During His Illness. Oser Will
Continue To Preside Over Vondenstein's Docket Until The Supreme Court Appoints An Interim Successor,
Mamoulides Said. The High Court's Temporary Appointee Cannot Run For Election To The Position,
According To State Law. The Election To Fill The Rest Of The Term, Which Expires In 1996, Must Be
Called By The Governor Within A Year. Under The 24th Judicial District's New Subdistrict System,
Candidates To Succeed Vondenstein Will Run In Subdistrict 4, Which Is Comprised Of Most Of The City Of
Kenner. Court Personnel Knew Vondenstein As A Man With A Ready Smile And Handshake Who Worked
Diligently In Presiding Over Both Civil And Criminal Trials. Jim Williams, Assistant District Attorney
Who Represented The State In Vondenstein's Division H, Said, 'It Was A Pleasure To Work In His Court.
He Was As Fair A Judge As I've Ever Seen, And I Can't Say Anything Better About Him Than That. He Was
Also A Good Man.' Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni Knew Vondenstein As One Of The Best Friends Of
His Late Father, Joe Yenni, Who Also Succumbed To Cancer In 1987. When Joe Yenni Was Mayor Of Kenner,
Vondenstein Served Him As City Attorney From 1970 To 1980, And When Yenni Was Elected Parish President,
Vondenstein Moved To Parish Government With Him, Working As Parish Attorney From 1980 To 1986. He Was
Elected To The Bench That Year And Was Re-Elected In 1992. Mike Yenni Said Vondenstein Was An
Especially Valuable Public Servant Because He Was Also An Engineer And Offered Expert Legal As Well As
Engineering Advice To Joe Yenni. He Said That For Years, The Yenni Family Has Considered The
Vondenstein Family Close Friends. Vondenstein, A Native Of Gueydan, La., Obtained A Mechanical
Engineering Degree From The University Of Southwestern Louisiana In 1958, After Serving In The Marine
Corps From 1951 To 1954. He Moved To Jefferson Parish In 1958 And Received His Law Degree From Loyola
