A HORSE THIEF SHOT

On Friday night May 24th, 1898, Captain Curry stole a horse from a Mr. Brown
three or four miles below Monroe and stopped the next night with Mr. C. R.
Nugent, the sheriff of Grant Parish.

Curry left Sunday morning and in about twenty minutes after the departure, the
sheriff of Caldwell with a possey rode up to Mr. Nugents house and inquired if
Curry had been seen. Being told he had just left, the pursuing party started
after him in hot haste overtaking him some three or four miles on the road.
On seeing the sheriff Curry ran and was fired at and hit in the left shoulder
which was seen to bleed profusely. He having on a light colored calico shirt
at the time. The stolen horse was a fleet animal and after running for some
time and gaining on his pursuers, Curry left the road and took to the woods
where he was lost site of and has not been seen or heard of since.
